The problem with the Kriegsmarine was lack of resources and technology. Most of the metal, research, and rare material production was being used against the Soviet front; thus, such boats as the Type IX, and XXI were severely delayed. The Type VII (which was based on the Type II of WW1) was forcibly kept in service far too long as a result, particularly with the advent of SONAR. If the Type XXI was in service as planned in late '42 or early '43 the allies would have shit themselves.

@Andrew598895 You mean 50 WW1 destroyers & war material to Britain.US volunteers traveled to Canada (part of the then British Empire) for training & transport by Canadian/British transports to European. A Battleship is quite a different type of ship. The US never sent any war material to Germany although Ford Germany, Opal (GM Germany), IBM & many other US companies had factories in Germany producing goods for the German Military.Ford Britain & Germany produced the same truck for both army's
@Andrew598895 The US congress and senate would not enter the war in Europe. The US public was isolationist and believed the US had been tricked into WW1 and would not be tricked again. Even after Pearl Harbor members of the Republican party believed it was a trick by FDR. Hitlers declaration of war on the US must be the worse military decisions ever made and re-leaved FDR of finding an excuse for a US declaration. The US public would never have allowed the US to declare war first.
@TheRandomSweed Britain declare war on Germany at the same time France did. As an ally of Japan Germany certainly did declare war on the USA three days after the Pearl Harbor attack.
War is war unfortunately people are killed. U boat crews fought bravely but for an unfair reason. Histrocally there is an execution afetr the war of a uboat captain after he found guilty foe war crimes.
Alexander Marinesko was the number one. on January 30 he carried out the "torpedo attack of the century", the sinking of the liner Wilhelm Gustloff to say nothing about Steuben
@chica476 Well the u-boot (or the eng. u-boat) is the short of Unterseeboot (undersea boat). The distinction between U-boat and submarine is common in English-language usage (where U-boat refers exclusively to the German vessels of the World Wars) but is unknown in German, in which the term U-Boot refers to any submarine.
@chica476 German U boats where superior to every other sub, and germany had lots. They used them to try cut off britains and other allies trade routes, and where almost successful.
seems every soldier from that time would with pleasure let to you be instead of himself. Wouls you like to die becuase of freezing around Staliningrad? Or be killed in 1939 by Polnish partizans? Or die in Soviet Gulag in lead ore mining?
@GINmetallist hehehehe i just wonder i dont mean to fight or do anything and if Nazi will be alive i will be proud to help killing the Jew ( Jerusalem Scum People )
@BuAbbY now I am reading many chronicles from this time and I see that G. Britain and France was a empty talking countries. After Hitler and fkn Soviet Union were grabbing Poland, they did NOTHING to help to Polish nation to survive in this difficult war.
@GINmetallist Actually they DID. In 1923 David Lloyd George, at the Conference of Genoa explicitly warned the Poles (Pilsudski, Beck and the gang that had just gone on an AGGRESSIVE war of conquest in Lithuania, White Russia and Eastern Galicia, and said Poland should PULL BACK to the Curzon Line or IT RISKS WAR. The Poles didn't listen. Beck tried to interest France in a war on a then weak Germany. Gamelin said "No". The Poles WOULDN'T LISTEN and made ENEMIES west and east. Reaped what it sowed
But nevertheless in spite of being very good army, the Nazi Army was beaten by the Soviet Army - my grandfather was a tankman, he destroyed a lot of Nazi's tanks and finished World War 2 in Berlin..
Get real will ya?? It was a war, and in war there are no "victims".
Besides what do you call the German civilians died in the fire bombing of Dresden and Hamburg? Dresden had one of the least number of nazi sympathizers in the Third Reich.
@GarrettGSF The source is from Die Wochenschau Germany ww2 The commander is Engelbert Endrass U-567 a type VIIC The attack was real the sinking is not.
It's really sad you know...I come to watch a video because I was curious about U-boats..and i have to to read comments of people saying how Germany didn't start WWII and listen to people who haven't even been to America calling us "Evil" etc..It actually sickens me not what they are saying, but the fact that there are people out there who actually believe it...I feel like we shouldn't keep talking about who started it like 5 year olds but talk about never having something like this happen again.
@dhstandard22 Look, I'm Canadian, I have relatives that served and died in WWII. So dont mistake me for some bias smug.
My point is, alot of what we have been told in North America is false, or speculation...
The fact is, Jews actually declared war on socialist Germany in 1933. Look it up, the original german plan was to take all the Jews in germany and send them to live on madagascar, which was still under the british empire. And britain actually AGREED with germany to send them there.
@b3tr4y4l Madagascar was part of the French Empire over which Britain had no control. Britain, which controlled Palestine, allowed Jews to emigrate there. Britain also allowed 10,000 Jewish children from Germany to enter the UK before September 1939 as long as the stay was temporary and the Government didn't have to pay anything.
@dhstandard22 The only point im trying to make is, people are fucked up... there is no right or wrong in war, there will always be tools in any country willing to be corrupted.
I knew an Australian naval officer that had been detached to the RN in 1942 for Atlantic convoy duty and he hunted U-boats in the North Atlantic This man had nothing but respect for the courage and skill of the German U-boat crews and Kriegsmarine officers, whom he said were thorough gentlemen. And that's from an RN officer on the German navy. It is strange to me that the most hateful anti-German comments come from those who have never seen a shot fired in battle, or who are ever likely to.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Why ignore Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Dresden and many other cities devastated by U.S. bombs, thousands of civilians have died!! Ipoctra! Zionist Damn!
it seems to be a german propaganda film, because everything works how it should (for the german submarine ofc). can you name the source where you got this vid?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@JohnQuincyAdams1 you are an idiot , Britain(and forced France to to the same thing) declared war to Germany so infact Britain started WW2, so Britain ruled by whore of jews churchill is responsible for 50+ million dead people
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Hitler didi not wanted to conquer the world .. you read too much of zionist-communist propaganda books, Hitler wanted conquer Europe(up to Ural), he even didi not want to conquer Nothern Afrika, he was there because Musolini was incompetent looser who lost all battles against Brits, Hitler even didi not want to conquer Britain ,he wanted to have peace with Britain, he bombed Britain not to conquer but to defeat (which was stupid strategy) .. as he said "bomb them out of war"
@ww2footage That's just not so. Hitler stated is desire to rule the world in his own book, "Mein Kampf". Read it. That's not propaganda. Hitler had operation, "Sea Lion", which was an invasion force of England that was called off when England defeated Nazi Germany in the Battle for Britain. The Axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan had joint plans to take over the world, hence why that struggle was named WWII.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Not true about Hitler and Japan wanting to take over the World.Where in Mein Kampf did Hitler state that he had a desire to take over the World?,I would be interested to know this.
@MrConsumerWhore1 - Further, Nazi Germany didn't, "protect their land". No, they *invaded* the lands of *other countries* to try and *take over the world*! In doing so, they murdered millions and millions of people. Again, with all due respect, get to a library and read some history books, get the facts before making yourself look so ignorant.
@MrConsumerWhore1 - Son, first of all, if you are going to address anyone, have the common decency and respect not to spew verbal vomit/vulgar language all over the place. People don't take you seriously when you do that and YouTube TOS staff take a dim view of it as well. Yes, the evil Japanese empire in WWII was blown to pieces, thank God. Nothing wrong in that. The Nazi's were extremely evil and committed committed massive crimes against all humanity. Learn some history before you speak.
@MrConsumerWhore1 Not al Germans were Nazi's, but to say that Nazis were not evil you better read some more about there atrocities. Holocaust n stuff.!!!
@dubmywub - By the way, with American Merchant Marine sailors brining food, medicine, weapons, etc., to England to defeat evil Nazi Germany with, those, "stupid", sailors probably saved your life, as you may not have ever been born had England been defeated and your grand parents killed.
you realy need to sort your facts out, russia was an evil country, look at america now, not much better than the nazis starting wars all over the place.
if anything nazi germany was one of the least evil nations.
@dubmywub - I beg your pardon? America an evil country? Good grief, you've never even been to America yet you make these crackpot judgments? America is the most benevolent nation in the world giving away millions and millions of dollars worth of food, medicines and other humanitarian aid all over the world via UNICEF, the American Red Cross and other American based organizations. "Starting wars all over the place"? There is only one war currently and that is the war on terrorism....
@dubmywub ...which is a worldwide global war being fought by many countries, including Canada, England, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, etc., not just America. "Nazi Germany was one of the least evil nations"? With all due respect young man, are you completely out of your mind?! Nazi Germany tried to take over the world and in the process committed unspeakable crimes against all humanity and murdered over 50 million people! Open a history book! Read! Get YOUR facts straight!
@JohnQuincyAdams1 correction, it tried to take over Europe. and at the end of it soviet Russia effectively succeeded in taking over half of Europe!
My fact are straight. 50 milion people? hahahah thats the sort of thing Stalin did im afraid. you oubviously are pulling these figures out your ass. 50 odd million people died in the whole of the second world war.
my god ive never met a more ignorant person in my entire life.
And America in the past 50 years has killed a good few million people.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 - Agreed. My Great Uncle was on that service. He described how you had to cope with the fear of being on a slow target at night, with strict orders not to stop or turn (even for survirors in the water). He described how during the night there would be an explosion and the next day, no sign of one of the ships in the convoy. No way to control things or fight back in any meaningful way.
@monkula84 allot of German uboats picked up survivors gave them food and water and a map to help them after the ship had sunk. that was until that Laconia incident when a German captain rescued the passenger of the passenger ship Laconia what he shot and sunk thinking it was a troop transport. he then sent a message to the alleys saying he will not shoot at any vessel what come to pick up the survivors.
@monkula84 a few day later a bomber looking for survivors of the Laconia sported the uboat with survivors and the recross flag and reported it and it was ordered to sink it as it posed a threat to shipping. after that German high Command gave explicit orders to not help survivors
@JohnQuincyAdams1 What absolute rubbish, the US navy had gunners stationed on US Merchat Marine ships.US submarines sunk Japanese freighters,or did you forget that side of the war?
@1815ish - Oh yeah, gunners on the decks of those defenseless merchant ships! By gosh, those gunners could shoot at those submarines under the water and blow the torpedo's right out of the water too! lol For crying out loud, get real.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Those ships were far from defenseless. Now the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were defenseless.Of course US gunners could fire upon U Boats.Have you ever heard of Asdic, direction finding,or indeed depth charges. You again fail to see the whole picture and understand that both Allies and Axis powers were culpable when committing acts of war.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Very cynical view to take.U Boat crews were not involved in any kind of war crimes. You seem to have completely ignored the fact that countries were at war, again it seems I have the state the obvious, commerce of countries at war were a legitimate target.German ships were sunk by,to use your own analogy,"cowardly" US and British as well as Russian subs.Yes it did take courage ,and skill to survive in a U Boat and they were determined to win.
@1815ish - Again and AGAIN, attacking defenseless merchant shipping that can't even shoot back is FAR from the supposed, "courage, determination and skill of the U-boat crews". Again, if anything, that's cowardly.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 You dont seem to read the replies I send to you.Again Courage,it takes courage to serve in a U Boat, Determination,to win British and US submariners also were determined to win,Skill, the skill of operating a U Boat and not getting killed.Again in a time of war a countries commerce is a legitimate target,e.g. the US and British bombing the Ruhr valley.Perhaps you need to study the history of WW2,I can recommend some books if you wish.
@1815ish - You don't seem to read the replies I make to you. Nazi Germany/Adolph Hitler *forced* the German people to fight and there is nothing courageous about a German citizen being forced to serve on a U-boat. If they refused, they would have been shot and most likely their families would have been murdered as well. For your information I am a historian and have over 3,000 history books in my own personal library, thank you very much.
ur useless history books.germans forced to serve in army...big joke.
Germany faced against almost entire world.
if germans wont serve in army the war would be lost.think common sense if ur country was facing the same like nazi germany where manpower is going down day after day what will ur president/leader do? will he say ok lets surrender n get our ---- kicked.
@1815ish There was on U-boat commander who commited a war crime, KL, Heinz Wilhelm Eck Commander of U-852 he was executed in the UK. If you want his story you can find it on Google. But he was the only one as i know.
it's interesting to note that the only difference in propaganda movies is the language: this is German, but if you look for the american counterpart, the ONLY thing that changes is the spoken language. Same kind of footage, same shots, same scenes, same "glorious" overall... funny!!
U-boats served all around the world. Even after the war some were used by the allies. Churchill said this was the only thing he truly feared during the war.
@1815ish - I agree but I suspect my mum (often bombed in Liverpool) would not.Ironically my dad (RAF),who spoke German, got on with Uboat crewmen-camaraderie of close teams in a metal coffin far from the safety of land? Some captains did shoot merchant seamen, but it was total war.Hartenstein didn't, and, more importantly, made great efforts to help his survivors. The gung ho behaviour of the Yanks & stupidity of the British(women&children on an armed troopship?!!)contributed hugely the disaster.
@stupidrider53 You are right,we must make their names known.I like Werner Hartenstein page on facebook.A great idea.He was a hero and extremely brave.May be this way their names will be known.
@stupidrider53 Absolutely. The bravery of the U Boat crews goes unoticed. For example the case of Werner Hartenstein, who is also on facebook.Hartenstein is forgotten these days, despite his brave actions.
Eric Tropp had the crew of the merchant ship,"David H. Atwater" machined gunned. Many other merchant ships would suffer the same fate. One, the German crew also threw hand gernades into the lifeboats.
Sorry dude, but if I have to read on one single comment page that u believe that:
1.England "might be speaking German right now" if not for the USA in ww2, 2.Hitler stated in MK that he wanted to conquer the whole world, 3.That the US isnt responsible for the death of millions of civilians in the past 60 years,
i have a feeling u wasted your time reading those "3000 history books"...
Had Hitler identified Kaiser Wilhelm and his advisors as the reason for the German people's impoverishment he might well have accomplished the result he professed to seek, the betterment of the German people. Until Hitler, it had usually been the Royals and Napoleon who had caused wars....
@ZweiWO Thanks ZweiWO, Very interesting. The more I'm thinking about this I believe my post is wrong. Thats what it was, When traveling underwater using the snorkel, If a wave came up over the valve or the sub dipped below the surface, The valve would swing shut and thats what did all the ear drum damage. Thanks for clearing that up! Fasinating!
If I understand this correctly, The snorkels were developed so quickly trying to give the advantage back to the U-Boats, They had a very basic design flaw. If you did not surface and pop the hatch first to equalize the subs internal pressure, The snorkel valve would in essance "pop" open causing numburous broken eardrums. Fasinating these U-Boats. :-)
Many u-boats were fitted with 'schnorkels' from 1944 onwards so they could run underwater out of sight of allied aircraft using their diesel engines for several hours and charge their electric motors.
i doubt in any sub they would use diesel engines underwater....in time of war...it was very noisy. so the sonar was easy to spot it...as for the electrical yes it was used for submerged movement, if im not mistaken it could be rigged for silent running at very low low speed..as for the diesel im sure it was an unpleasent time when those things were running
The snorkel was used to avoid radar detection; Since 1943 the Allied airborne radars were so accurate-they could pick up a U-boat from over 100miles in clear weather(WWII sonar had a range of about 3-5 miles for comparsion!). So it didn't matter it was noisy; The sub could travel submerged indefinitely and was thus invisible at long range(radar waves are absorbed/reflected by water); During attacks(when near escort destroyers), they always switched to batteries to stay quiet as well...
Another successful tactic was to run "decks-awash" -that is with only the conning tower sticking out of water and all other hatches closed&submerged. It gave the boat quite na ample speed advantage(early snorkels were very fragile and they could literally snap in half from the"wind blast" at speeds higher than 7 knots; later it was greatly improved); While the boat could still travel at speeds around 12-14kts, it's Radar Cross Section was dramatically reduced and so was its detection range...
I believe the electric motor was only used for underwater operations. the diesel engines were used when running on top. Not only were the diesel motors used for manuvering, They were also used to recharge the electric batteries which only lasted so long.
ok and whats the diference? for example can they use only the eletric ones all the time or need both working or if they lose one, they can use only the other one?
The most common submarines of WWII like german Types VII, IX; American Gato class; British S-Class and so on... Had more power and MUCH, MUCH more fuel for the diesel engines(they were the boat's primary means of propulsion); Diesels gave the top speeds between 17 and 22 knots and ranges up to 25000NM(more than the span of the Earth!)for the German IX type...
Since diesels need fresh air to burn fuel-they were mostly operated on the surface or near(using snorkel). For deep diving submarines needed other means of propulsion that is either nuclear or electric(there were also experiments with rocket-like Walther engines; but these were deemed too dangerous and very fuel-inefficient-only Russia uses them today in torpedoses ; one of the Walther-torpedoes was the reason of sinking the submarine Kursk in 2000)
Electric motors used lead-acid batteries(larger versions of those used in cars)and in most WWII subs had less power(The only exception being Type XXI and XXIII experimental u-boats at the end of the war) and much shorter running-time than diesels; After about 4-8 hours(up to 48 hrs in the aforementioned experimental subs) running on electric motors, underwater a WWII sub had either to surface or deploy snorkel to recharge the batteries using diesel engines as voltage generators
Although being slower(~8kts top speed)and short-ranged-the e-motors were also very quiet so they allowed to evade underwater detection to some degree and use the U-Boat's own hydrophones to a better end. Type XXI, XXIII and all diesel-electric postwar subs used electric power as the primary means of propulsion(with more horsepower than diesels and much larger batteries that lasted for up to a few days); with diesels being relegated to an auxilary/emergency role.
Typically modern non-nuclear subs run their diesels for a few hours once every few days only to replenish their batteries' charge and remain deeply submerged running on electric power for the rest of the time(with oxygen being regenerated by chemical means rather than being vented in like during WWI and WWII)...
yeah but only after the war they would know that hitler was a lunatic, cause during the conflict he was like a god doing everything to protect germany and etc... so if they could know that he was crazy im sure they would never fight for nazism :/
@1815ish I don't admire anything about them. My dad and all my uncles volunteered for service in the Canadian Navy before Pearl Harbor. They served in the Battle of the Atlantic in 1940-41. Some of my Dad's classmates were killed in action on ships sunk by the Germans.
@1815ish - "courage, skill and determination of the U-boat crews"? This video shows a German submarine sinking an unarmed freighter. There is no courage, skill or determination here at all, merely sinking an unarmed ship, killing men who can't even shoot back. If anything, that's cowardly.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 It was a time of war, commerce was a legitimate target.German freighters were also sunk. You may have heard of the Whillim Gustloff which was sunk carrying refuges. It is hard to find a U boat captain who did not respect the crews that were sunk.Take the case of Werner Hartenstein who helped the people on the Laconia and was attacked by a US plane for his troubles.Allies committed war crimes aswell.
@cutmenow990 Hitler was the supreme commander, they wore the Swastika on their caps and sleeves a symbol of Nazism founded by Hitler. But many U Boat crews did not sink to the base acts of the Nazis. They fought for their country the same as British and American military personnel did.
@1815ish - They didn't fight for their country, they fought for Adolph Hitler, the evil, psychotic, megalomaniac dictator who was responsible for millions of German people being killed and the nation of German being utterly destroyed.
@JohnQuincyAdams1To understand why so many fought for Germany and did not commit war crimes, you should study a bit about Germany after its defeat in WW1 and prior to Hitler coming to power.U Boat crews amongst others were nationalists;who is not. They fought or a better Germany.I suppose the US and British just fought for the hell of it!!!!!!!!
@1815ish - Murdering millions and millions of people was for a, "better Germany"? I hope you don't really believe that, as you'd be sounding like a brainwashed Nazi. They didn't, "fight for Germany", that fought for that card carrying psycho, megalomaniac dictator, bastard child from an incestuous relationship, Adolph Hitler. If they hadn't, Hitler would have had them SHOT!
@JohnQuincyAdams1 You seem to have only picked what suited you out of my reply, please re read.I did say "...and did not commit war crimes."I gather you dont like Hitler but war crimes were committed by all sides during the war.Ordinary people fought for their countries. You seem to have totally disregarded the sinking of the Whilim Gustloff and the heroic deeds of Werner Hartenstein but do feel free to pick what only suits your point of view without looking at the whole picture.
@1815ish - I don't like Hitler? You are very perceptive. lol It's fair to say that anyone with a sane mind doesn't like Hitler. Fighting for your country doesn't include committing war crimes and murdering innocent people by the millions, as Nazi Germany was guilty of in WWII. No nation in the world has ever committed such downright evil, demented, horrendous crimes against all of humanity that Nazi Germany did.
@JohnQuincyAdams1 U Boat crews never committed war crimes.Russia under Stalin killed millions and we can only guess at the numbers who died under the Soviet control of Eastern European countries, many through suicide out of despair. The fact that war crimes were committed by Nazis didnt seem to deter the US from inviting many to live in the US.Arthur Rudolf was a Nazi party member and attended hangings but became famous for his work on the Saturn V programme.
@1815ish - No one ever said Nazi Germany U-boat crews committed war crimes. It's clear you've realized that you've lost this debate and are now flaccidly attempting to bring up other topics to hide behind your loss. Take care.
@JohnQuincyAdams1" Fighting for your country doesnt include committing war crimes..." These are your own words; do you not know what you have stated. Again you pick what suits you only forgetting, yet again, to look at the whole picture.Winning must be so important to someone of limited debating skills.Perhaps you should read more and not make arguments that you know nothing about.A sore loser you truly are.

What's the difference between a german u-boot, and a submarine of a different national origin? The name?
chica476 10 months ago
@chica476 Well the u-boot (or the eng. u-boat) is the short of Unterseeboot (undersea boat). The distinction between U-boat and submarine is common in English-language usage (where U-boat refers exclusively to the German vessels of the World Wars) but is unknown in German, in which the term U-Boot refers to any submarine.
p3ro83 10 months ago
@chica476 German U boats where superior to every other sub, and germany had lots. They used them to try cut off britains and other allies trade routes, and where almost successful.

And britain actually AGREED with germany to send them there.
b3tr4y4l 8 months ago 3
@b3tr4y4l Madagascar was part of the French Empire over which Britain had no control. Britain, which controlled Palestine, allowed Jews to emigrate there. Britain also allowed 10,000 Jewish children from Germany to enter the UK before September 1939 as long as the stay was temporary and the Government didn't have to pay anything.

And that's from an RN officer on the German navy. It is strange to me that the most hateful anti-German comments come from those who have never seen a shot fired in battle, or who are ever likely to.

1815ish 1 year ago
@JohnQuincyAdams1 Very cynical view to take.U Boat crews were not involved in any kind of war crimes. You seem to have completely ignored the fact that countries were at war, again it seems I have the state the obvious, commerce of countries at war were a legitimate target.German ships were sunk by,to use your own analogy,"cowardly" US and British as well as Russian subs.Yes it did take courage ,and skill to survive in a U Boat and they were determined to win.
1815ish 1 year ago

1815ish 1 year ago
@1815ish - You don't seem to read the replies I make to you. Nazi Germany/Adolph Hitler *forced* the German people to fight and there is nothing courageous about a German citizen being forced to serve on a U-boat. Corskof 2 years ago
Fasinating!
purdyquibb 2 years ago
If I understand this correctly, The snorkels were developed so quickly trying to give the advantage back to the U-Boats, They had a very basic design flaw. If you did not surface and pop the hatch first to equalize the subs internal pressure, The snorkel valve would in essance "pop" open causing numburous broken eardrums. Fasinating these U-Boats. :-)
purdyquibb 2 years ago 2
Many u-boats were fitted with 'schnorkels' from 1944 onwards so they could run underwater out of sight of allied aircraft using their diesel engines for several hours and charge their electric motors.
Mannion3223 2 years ago 2
@Mannion3223 - they were a nightmare (sub could not respond if spotted) and arrived too late.
Lateralthink 2 years ago
i doubt in any sub they would use diesel engines underwater....in time of war...it was very noisy. so the sonar was easy to spot it...as for the electrical yes it was used for submerged movement, if im not mistaken it could be rigged for silent running at very low low speed..as for the diesel im sure it was an unpleasent time when those things were running
set972 2 years ago
The snorkel was used to avoid radar detection; Since 1943 the Allied airborne radars were so accurate-they could pick up a U-boat from over 100miles in clear weather(WWII sonar had a range of about 3-5 miles for comparsion!). So it didn't matter it was noisy; The sub could travel submerged indefinitely and was thus invisible at long range(radar waves are absorbed/reflected by water); During attacks(when near escort destroyers), they always switched to batteries to stay quiet as well...
MegaThrowaway 2 years ago
Another successful tactic was to run "decks-awash" -that is with only the conning tower sticking out of water and all other hatches closed&submerged. It gave the boat quite na ample speed advantage(early snorkels were very fragile and they could literally snap in half from the"wind blast" at speeds higher than 7 knots; later it was greatly improved); While the boat could still travel at speeds around 12-14kts, it's Radar Cross Section was dramatically reduced and so was its detection range...
MegaThrowaway 2 years ago
I believe the electric motor was only used for underwater operations. the diesel engines were used when running on top. Not only were the diesel motors used for manuvering, They were also used to recharge the electric batteries which only lasted so long.

MegaThrowaway 2 years ago
Since diesels need fresh air to burn fuel-they were mostly operated on the surface or near(using snorkel). For deep diving submarines needed other means of propulsion that is either nuclear or electric(there were also experiments with rocket-like Walther engines; but these were deemed too dangerous and very fuel-inefficient-only Russia uses them today in torpedoses ; one of the Walther-torpedoes was the reason of sinking the submarine Kursk in 2000)
MegaThrowaway 2 years ago
Electric motors used lead-acid batteries(larger versions of those used in cars)and in most WWII subs had less power(The only exception being Type XXI and XXIII experimental u-boats at the end of the war) and much shorter running-time than diesels; After about 4-8 hours(up to 48 hrs in the aforementioned experimental subs) running on electric motors, underwater a WWII sub had either to surface or deploy snorkel to recharge the batteries using diesel engines as voltage generators
MegaThrowaway 2 years ago
Although being slower(~8kts top speed)and short-ranged-the e-motors were also very quiet so they allowed to evade underwater detection to some degree and use the U-Boat's own hydrophones to a better end. Type XXI, XXIII and all diesel-electric postwar subs used electric power as the primary means of propulsion(with more horsepower than diesels and much larger batteries that lasted for up to a few days); with diesels being relegated to an auxilary/emergency role.
MegaThrowaway 2 years ago
Typically modern non-nuclear subs run their diesels for a few hours once every few days only to replenish their batteries' charge and remain deeply submerged running on electric power for the rest of the time(with oxygen being regenerated by chemical means rather than being vented in like during WWI and WWII)...
MegaThrowaway 2 years ago
