Because most of those women were married, and unlike now marriages were actually suppose to mean something, as in you shouldn't be sleeping around and such. If they had all just been single there probably would have been no issue.

@arikay123 a lot of them were single. There was an overriding sexism in that age (as we see Francesca's character dealing with). Though I do agree that the inter-marital sex was wrong on both parts, I think that a woman should be able to have sex with whomever she wants as a man can (socially). The part I don't like is his misguiding them. (Though with his reputation, the women must have been stupid if they really believed his vows of love.)
