It's a great game! The problem people have with HOMM4 is that it's the sequel to one of the best games EVER created (and for me who's been a gamer since NES times and played over 800 games it IS the best one). HOMM3 is just perfect and a lot of players just wanted more of the same.
I personally enjoy innovation in games so I appreciated HOMM4 and judged it by it's own standards not as a sequel to HOMM3. And by the way you just have to try HOMM3 - it will blow you away

I was probably about 9 or 10 I reckon, and back then my dad still had the time to indulge in some Might and Magic, and the icon was on the desktop of the family computer, double-clicked it and never left the computer for WEEKS!
I'm told it was terrible compared to other HOMM's, but I suppose the lack of knowledge of 'better' games made it better for me. Is this one really as bad as people say? Or just fanboys?
HOMM4 had some interesting ideas, but in most cases weren't executed in the best way.
The campaigns sucked for the most part with the exception of Galduan Half-Dead (or whatever his name was) and the town screens were pure vomit.
Was it still a good game regardless? Yes, the music was great, the sprites were for the most part good, and all the new ideas they had mostly had the right idea. It's still my least favorite HOMM game, but it is underappreciated.
I really enjoyed 4, but I still felt like 2, 3, and 5's necromancers were more intimidating. They didn't need to mix with demonic troops, for one thing, and their undead warriors just had a more menacing look to them. I missed my dread knights, wraiths, and liches, dammit. D= Still. This theme was smashing, even if 3 and 5 were a titch more 'fitting'.
As its been discussed countless times, H4 differs alot from the original setup of the others games, its a like-dislike situation, based on opinion. H4 has in my opinion one of the greatest game soundtrack ever created.
for some reason I never really liked IV, and V just made me sad to see how much it have all changed as Im a player from back to the first version HOMM I.
and I am now stuck at playing HOMM III. which was the best version if you ask me.
and with all the developers around HOMM III. there are now some unofficial versions which made the game even better.
@h0vding Problem with HOMM III is that it's extremely unstable and I'm running it on XP Home edition. I wonder if I need some kind of patch to make it more stable.
@DonF72 problem is not the game but the system, XP Home edition is only good for working on MS-Office and a few other programs, it can't work good with graphics and internet
3 was better than 1,2,4 and 5. Because the towns where balanced and the gameplay were good and it wouldn't stop being fun and you couldn't predict it as much as you could predict the others.
Still I have made up a foolproof plan to beat every map with any castle. And the easiest to grasp was actually the weakest town of all but it's even the town that is most unbalanced. Necropolis infact.
I actually think it's better that they took it from oriental and trditional places. I assume 3DO wants to give the gamer the ultimate experience and enjoy the game as much as possible. So you get the feeling as being there. I personally don't think it would even have got half as good if they produced their music themselves. The game becomes a whole with this incredible music :)
The problem with Heroes IV is that 3DO was running out of money and they rushed the release of the game. NWC, the developers, wanted at least a few more months to work on it. 3DO did the same thing to Might and Magic IX. In fact, it was 3DO that pretty much brought down the franchise. They were the ones who forced NWC to make all those expansions to heroes 3 rather than work on Heroes IV. 3DO favored quantity over quality. It's just too bad that no one was able to buy NWC when 3DO went bankrupt.
I liked the hero system in HoMM IV, you know, you could move the hero on battlefield and use it as footman or an archer..It was cool.
I agree with people, who think that there is a big difference between necropolis and inferno.
I like HoMM III and HoMM IV equally much, sometimes I prefer HoMM III, sometimes I don't..The gameplay is different in those games.. A couple wrong castles mixed in HoMM IV doesn't make it a piece of s***, actually the castle mixes make it more tactical.

well the latter of your points, about necropolis not necessarily being evil, is a concept much easier to understand when you get into the whole background for HOMM5.
lol, i almost forgot how shit 4 was. the only thing i remembered was the good thing. multiple heroes in an army. the rest sucked.
Not a particularly good Necropolis song. However, that being said, I think it fits perfectly for the character of Gauldoth Half-dead. It has its evil brass motifs, but also hints of heroic motifs; sort of encapsulating the character's duality.
The Necropolis campaign was really well written. I love how Gauldoth wasn't the stereotypical evil power hungry necromancer. He understood the need to maintain a balance between life and death. He understood that he couldn't just oppress people like all the other necromancers who came before him. His goal of creating an empire that would endure while all others crumble into dust was truly visionary.
His story was so well written. I love how when his master demands him to kill a vampire that holds a certain artifact his response is like, "Umm, are you sure, he's a good ally?" It's not something you'd expect an undead character to say, but his character had so much personality it was entertaining.
3 you can build alot more creatures and i liked the towns more, but 4 you can pimp your hero wayyyy better, spells are far more usefull and powerful and overall I thought the campaign were alot better in 4 alswell.
with 4 i really wanted to know what happened next, in 3 it was just ... meh lets beat these guys and hope the story gets better
Vampires were way too overpowered. I loved vampires, loved playing Necros (still do in HoMM V) but they were so nigh-on indestructible when amassed that it wasn't even funny.

I felt the same way after playing through some campaigns in HOMM IV. I was thinking why would people hate this game and I came to the conclusion that it's because in HOMM IV you have to actually think a little of what you are doing when in HOMM III you usually survive on creature strength alone.
Doesn't suck. If it came out on it's own- i.e. it was called Heroes of Might and Magic, and didn't have the awesomeness of II and III behind it, it would be an amazing game.
Otherwise, it is compared unfavorably to the previous games.
inferior to HOMM3 and HOOM5....yes (imo not that much) but then again it's hard to compare them because they changed a lot in 4 (good changes like the caravans...bad changes like a dwelling excludes the other creature type) but i have to say that the soundtrack is really good!
But Homm5 is the most bizzare cuz: Dungeon is a fuckin Dark Elf city! it´s not a Dark elves! It should be Warlocks, Chaotic magic and tons after tons of Monsters that´s serves the Warlocks! that´s Dungeon, one of my favorite towns!
Know why that happened? Because it's Ubisoft. Ubisoft fucks game up. HoMM5 may be a decent game in its own right, but it does not deserve to be known as the rightful successor to the HOMM series.
I can say this! It´s not the better game of the Homm series! but the music and the new world of Axeroth is awesome! i like that why! when it´s goes to the playing and towns! they just took some cretures and put them in other towns and created new ones! i didn't liked that really!

In HOMM4...if there is snow around the castle you're also gonna have snow in the castle! if the Necro town is in the middle of a grassy plain it also means you have grass in the town! I agree with the rest though! Imo necropolis is the best designed in HOMM5! They're really look scary there!

It doesn't feel like the other HoMM games, which is EXACTLY right! But if it was released separately, not compared to HoMMIII, I'm sure this game would have gotten excellent marks.

For all you guys that aren't pleased with the balance in the game, try the EQUILIBRIS mod, or at least read the changelog so that you would see what was made better (genies, vamps, ogres and other stuffs got balanced).
There are better themes in the game by my opinion but this one is prety good also. I still can't fight the dark feeling I get.

which is in my opinion the best OS my laptop came with vista when I bought it.. changed it to windows 7 and it made my laptop 3x faster.

But Wake Of Gods was an amazing expansion, which changed the fun of the game a lot, but made playing against some other players quite harder as well.

well the latter of your points, about necropolis not necessarily being evil, is a concept much easier to understand when you get into the whole background for HOMM5.
lol, i almost forgot how shit 4 was. the only thing i remembered was the good thing. multiple heroes in an army. the rest sucked.

Not a particularly good Necropolis song. However, that being said, I think it fits perfectly for the character of Gauldoth Half-dead. It has its evil brass motifs, but also hints of heroic motifs; sort of encapsulating the character's duality.

The Necropolis campaign was really well written. I love how Gauldoth wasn't the stereotypical evil power hungry necromancer. He understood the need to maintain a balance between life and death. He understood that he couldn't just oppress people like all the other necromancers who came before him. His goal of creating an empire that would endure while all others crumble into dust was truly visionary.

His story was so well written. I love how when his master demands him to kill a vampire that holds a certain artifact his response is like, "Umm, are you sure, he's a good ally?" It's not something you'd expect an undead character to say, but his character had so much personality it was entertaining.

theyre both great.
3 you can build alot more creatures and i liked the towns more, but 4 you can pimp your hero wayyyy better, spells are far more usefull and powerful and overall I thought the campaign were alot better in 4 alswell.
with 4 i really wanted to know what happened next, in 3 it was just ... meh lets beat these guys and hope the story gets better

Vampires were way too overpowered. I loved vampires, loved playing Necros (still do in HoMM V) but they were so nigh-on indestructible when amassed that it wasn't even funny.

I felt the same way after playing through some campaigns in HOMM IV. I was thinking why would people hate this game and I came to the conclusion that it's because in HOMM IV you have to actually think a little of what you are doing when in HOMM III you usually survive on creature strength alone.

Doesn't suck. If it came out on it's own- i.e. it was called Heroes of Might and Magic, and didn't have the awesomeness of II and III behind it, it would be an amazing game.
Otherwise, it is compared unfavorably to the previous games.

inferior to HOMM3 and HOOM5....yes (imo not that much) but then again it's hard to compare them because they changed a lot in 4 (good changes like the caravans...bad changes like a dwelling excludes the other creature type) but i have to say that the soundtrack is really good!

I suspect the series peaked at HOMM3 (although I far prefer the 2D sprites and operatic solos of HOMM2).
The next HOMM game needs to be a touch more inventive, but not in a way which dilutes or dumbs the current formula.
I still preferred the 2D sprites.

necropolis is my favorite faction in homm4. all u need is demonology given by death & nature (if i remember well).
having demonology u dont need any troops. just cast summon imps, cerberi, slimes(?) or devils and most battles are won.

In HOMM4...if there is snow around the castle you're also gonna have snow in the castle! if the Necro town is in the middle of a grassy plain it also means you have grass in the town! I agree with the rest though! Imo necropolis is the best designed in HOMM5! They're really look scary there!

For all you guys that aren't pleased with the balance in the game, try the EQUILIBRIS mod, or at least read the changelog so that you would see what was made better (genies, vamps, ogres and other stuffs got balanced).
There are better themes in the game by my opinion but this one is prety good also. I still can't fight the dark feeling I get.
