  • This funk is too much different than we brazilians have in Brazil. This type of Funk has Post-Punk and Disco influences!

  • Este funk é muito diferente do que nós brasileiros temos no Brasil. Este tipo de Funk tem pós-punk e influências Disco!

  • BTW, this track is funky in a way that defies the term.... a testimony that these new wave types can make their own rhythms informed but not determined by their sources

  • I'm in this vid. I'm the guy on the boat. Rilly.

  • where can I find the lyrics??!!

  • I drink my pint of gazoline each morning and catch 5 kinds of ethyl-acetylene with or without parabene a day and add 6 or 7 forms of methyl-diethylmetamphetamin. Don't forget sunday to come at the church with one or more dose of benzodiazepin for the pop's collection. Thank

  • Love this song!!

  • The Fast Boat to Thassos

  • Really need a nice DVD upgrade of this. My VHS wore out ages ago. :)

  • get a new VHS (on ebay), analog is good for you!

  • Now you've touched my imagination. It would be great to see it upgraded as a deluxe CD/DVD package. :-)

  • @WashingtonBeUpInThis

    READ THIS:

"(...)And then we worked together on a project called 'Gasoline In Your Eye' which was a long-form video release. THAT'S PROBABLY GOING TO BE RE-ISSUED IN DVD FORM SOON. It would be nice to get that back out there as the visual side of what Cabaret Voltaire did has always been very important to me." - Richard H. Kirk (indiemusic co uk site's interview, November 1st 2009)

    :-D :-D :-D

  • @TheMercyBeat wow, thanks for the info. :) Can't wait.

  • It is from the 1985 "Drinking Gasoline" EP. It is very hard to get it on CD as it's very rare. Its vinyl and cassette versions are very affordable and easy to get, though. You can find it on a CD version of "The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord" album from 1985 as well. It is a rarity too. :-)

  • All I can say is I'm thankful there's I-Tunes. Downloaded "Drinking Gasoline" and "Covenant," which I've never actually seen anywhere in physical format. Both albums fill up a CD nicely if you lop off the two redundant tracks...

  • "Drinking Gasoline" and "The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord", both can be found in their physical format today. It's just that their CD versions are very rare and therefore quite expensive. But they pop up on the sites like eBay, Musicstack, Discogs, Amazon...etc. occasionally too. I own them.

Personally I don't like downloading. Always wanted to have the whole package. But if you like it, then who am I to contradict you. :-)

  • Dude imagine if a dog opened its mouth and this song started playing

    that would be awesome

  • This must the best youtube comment i've seen so far.

  • Full ack.

  • @flakyolly what an amazing thought! Drinking Gasoline - what an awesome release that was.

  • @flakyolly best comment ever, what a beautiful mental image, gloriously fucked up :)

  • @flakyolly That has to be the best comment I've ever witnessed on YouTube.... awesome factor 11, Spinal Tap Scale

  • Is that a sample of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" I'm hearing half-buried in the mix?

  • i think its just a digital synth

  • was this pre-MTV? crazy!!! I can tell where Cabaret Voltaire gathers its inspiration from the likes of such contemporary artists as Kraftwerk et. al...has that beatnik vibe!

  • This music came out at the same time that MTV was in full-swing although MTV would not play it. I remember seeing these videos around 1984 and 1985 on Night Flight, an all-night show that used to be shown on the USA network back in those days. Around mid-1986, MTV started 120 minutes and then started playing Cabarete Voltaire videos albeit very late on Sunday nights

  • Yello, and Cabaret Voltaire were both featured in Ferris Bueller's day off...

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

  • Nice! Sounds like (Post?) Madchester Techno Dance Funk. What's not to like?!? Cool upload, neckro - These guys were only in my peripheral vision in the 80's. Thanks for sharing. Did these guys always have that Funky Twang goin' on??? Have to check out 'smore.

  • Being hugely influenced by "black" music (James Brown and Isaac Hayes amongst others) too, yes, they did!!! Funk was always one of the key elements in their music as well. {I love funk myself! :-)}

  • Let´s funk toget...,

    again & again.(I love too!! :-)

  • Desaster again!

    (I love it...,pardon!! :-)

  • Oh, yeah ...let's have a party!! :-)

  • Carbaret Voltaire invented Industrial, Electro, Electronica, and Beam Dance - Beam Tech??

  • Cabaret Voltaire spawned so many (mixed-up) genres!! Just go through all of their catalogue, album by album, track by track and take a good listen!!

  • @MagnitudePerson I reckon the Cabs would disagree with you. What is all this need for labeling everything? These terms mean nothing. The Cabs are the Cabs. It's as simple as that!

  • Wow! always loved the cabs, my & self & two mates were (in 84-85) the only kids in school who knew of them, tryed to get others into them but no one intrested, then jump forward to now & I find kids dancing to this in clubs !!!

They have no idea how old this is. They were so ahead of the game .

  • That's because they were making future hits yesterday.

Ahead-of-the-game music from the day is always widely misunderstood. And it will always be. Why? Because a big majority of people are simply not ready for it yet. They are getting David Bowie's and Cabs' point only recently. Sort of.

  • I don't think the general public will ever be ready for this kind of music. It is a bit too out of the box. People are just too narrow for it. And I don't mean to sound elitist when saying that, but a lot of people enjoy their pleasant little comfort zone when it comes to music.

  • So true! So very true as well!

Yet it has to do with the general public's passivity too. They just don't want to be bothered with that particular music's messages at all.

  • oops..could be wrong. peter may have done this one. i guess i didn't read the credits all the way thru. my bad...

  • Don't want to discredit you but it really was Peter Care as it says so on the VHS's back sleeve. ...Never mind your bad at all. :-)

  • i have this on original VHS tape somewhere :p Great stuff, Cabs was so ahead of its time with their cut-up techniques and dadaistic feel

  • Parts of this sound like they sampled Stevie Wonder's "Superstitious." Anyone know if they did?

  • thanx for upload

  • i like all this diy music...alternative.art of noise and carberet voltare are way ahead and always were.cut and paste funk poetry expression.use the computer-cubase ect +microphones and video=art....do it

  • Featured on:

    "Drinking Gasoline" EP (1985)

    and

"The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord" album's CD version (1985)

  • How can ArtOfNoise compare to this?-they were 3rd rate Yello impersonators-not an ounce of originality-just one good video&thats it-where to start with the Cabs???

    Thanks for posting-real artful noise!!!

  • That is a complex question, actually. In some parts Cabaret Voltaire's and The Art Of Noise's styles CAN be compared to each other (Fairlights usage, mind) whereas in some other ones they CAN'T be compared as their sounds are being differed from each other indeed.

The Art Of Noise's name comes from a Luigi Russolo's sametitled FUTURISTIC oriented work.

Yes, it IS true that the Cabs were a whole lot more noisy than the Art Of Noise - that's totally unquestionable indeed!

  • totally agree with duerdenn

  • Heh heh...eh! :-)

(I appreciate your way of thinking as well.)

    Just be yourself! ;-)

  • Video directors trivia:

This video is made by Peter Care.

  • no, i don't think this was directed by peter care. i used to think that most of the videos on "gasoline in your eye" were until i finally found peter's credit sheet (cabs videos) and this one isn't on any of them as far as production and directing goes. would sure love to know who actually directed it..

  • Big dada souvenir...

  • sounds very "Art of noise"... good 80's style!

  • The Art Of Noise were as fantastic as Cabaret Voltaire. Their music was ahead of its time too. When they started it was only 1983 but already sounded like 21st century. They were the first electronic group to use the revolutionary Fairlight CMI sampler as well. "Beatbox", "Close (To The Edith)", "Moments In Love", "Paranoimia", "Legs", "Dragnet", "Yebo", "Instruments Of Darkness (All Of Us Are One People)"...all were/are fantastic pieces. Respect in any case!

  • Video added to playlist.

  • this should have six stars

    * * * * * *

  • *sings*

    "Make me selfish

    Make me smile

Be my senses for a while

    Oh you, don't stop!..."

Video = art for art's sake that is!

    Priceless!

  • Timeless. Truly classic.
