Scorsese clearly deserved it. being responsible for a critically acclaimed film is one thing. directing something with so much life is another and Scorsese did just that.
@kwangAPORIA No way! Marty is still as good as ever, departed was very good in my opinion also Hugo was too, but Marty is going to direct a film called the Irishman starring de Niro, Pesci, Pacino, it's gonna be epic
Martin deserved to win.. his direction for Hugo was masterful..and I hope and pray to God Hugo win's Best Picture at the Oscars..I know deep in my heart it won't.. but if it does.. I'll let that poor girl out of my basement..and even if she calls the cops.. I'll walk into jail smiling knowing that Martin took home what was rightfully his. :)
I know this is totally out of place because we're watching a speech from one of the greatest directors of all time, but Leonardo DiCaprio looked really good. Just sayin
I owe everyone that i offended by my comment including Martin Scorsese a huge appology, not only is "Hugo" the best directed film of the year but Scorsese took more chances then ever before in making it then any picture before, and he pulled it off. There arnt many movies which can still be considered great with the main actors being children but "Hugo" still is, and it has a great performance from "Ben Kingsly". The other contenders did nothing in taking the chances that Scorsese did.
@thejhornerfactor i dont know but he still has a lot of directing left and if his movies keep getting better then future movies that will be better wont get the praise they deserve, you have to remember that he won in 2006 for The Departed but i will take a look at watching "Hugo" and maybe i will change my mind, maybe it is a brillent movie, or maybe my thoughts will stay the same on the movie. Ill have to watch the movie first and state a factual comment instead of one on the spot.
@thejhornerfactor , your right, all the movies won by Wienstien are horrible pieces of crap. Shakespeare in love made me want to go back in time and shoot Shakespeare in the head. I thought this year "A Dangerous Method" would be the film to beat or "The Tree Of Life". Martin Scorsese, Eastwood and Spielberg are my pics for best living directors. Scorsese is the best director by far but he should have already won in the past for "Gangs Of New York" and "Goodfellas", maybe this is his best work.
@Biloist WHAT SCORSESE PULL OFF IN HUGO IS AMAZING, ONE MORE TIME HE PROVE HIS VERSATILITY AND MASTERY IN DIFERENT GENRES!....AND SCORSESE SHOULD WON THE OSCAR FOR "RAGING BULL" AND "GOODELLAS"..."GANGS OF NEW YORK" ALSO WON THE GOLDEN GLOBE FOR HIM HAS "BEST DIRECTOR", BUT I THINK THAT ROMAN POLANKY "THE PIANIST" WAS BETTER IN THAT YEAR...SCORSESE IS A LEGEND!...IF HE WIN THE OSCAR FOR BEST DIRECTOR FOR "HUGO", HE DESERVE IT!!... I AGREE WITH YOU WITH THE "BEST LIVING DIRECTORS" LIST!
THE 28 OF JANUARY IS THE "DGA" CEREMONY....IF SCORSESE WON THE "DGA"(DIRECTOR GUILD) IT HAS 90% OF CHANCES TO WIN HIS 2 OSCAR....SAME FOR THE OTHERS....THE DIRECTOR WHO WIN THE DGA IS ALMOUST SURE THAT IT WILL WIN THE OSCAR.
@Biloist ACTUALLY SCORSESE DID WON THE GOLDEN GLOBE FOR "GANGS OF NEW YORK" FOR BEST DIRECTOR IN 2003!!!...AND IF YOU SAID "HUGO IS A KIDS MOVIE"...YOU CLEALRY DONT WATCH IT!!!....IT IS MUCH MORE THAN THAT,...AND THE TECHNICS THAT SCORSESE AND HIS TEAM HAVE DONE IN THIS FILM IS INCREDIBLE...I WAS READING AN ENTERVIEW OF ROBERT RICHARDSON(SCORSESE D.P.) AND THE SEQUENCES THAT SCORSESE PLANED AND ARE OTHER TECHNICS THAT HIS CREW PULL OFF ARE REMARKABLE...HE DESERVE THIS AND MORE FOR HUGO!
@tirzan1988 YES I KNEW THAT...I WAS JUST ANSWERING TO OTHER GUY WHO SAID " SCORSESE SHOULD WON THE GOLDEN GLOBE FOR "GANGS...", I SAID TO HIM THAT HE DID WON IT FOR THAT FILM....AND YES ALSO FOR THE DEPARTED.
@Biloist lol, "fucken". Hugo is amazing, and it deserves all the awards it can have. Moneyball, Descendants and Dragon Tattoo too. The Artist should go home empty handed, is a good film but overrated because of Harvey Weinstein's evil campaign. Some of the worst best picture winners have been produced by him, or at least distributed by Miramax (English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, King's Speech)
Wow i don't really know too much about him i'd heard his name obviously but didn't really know him until i watched Hugo, but wow he gets some serious respect from everyone standing ovations to the point where he had to tell them to sit that lool thats respect.
@jman280292 Martin Scorsese is one of the most well respected and talented directors in cinema history. His work includes classics such as Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull. He has never made a terrible movie. ever! That's why everyone got so happy when he won lol I would've done the same thing. It took all the way until 2007 for him to win an oscar (for The Departed) so hopefully he'll win it again for HUGO

@Biloist You should watch the film, it's a really good movie and not juste a stupid child movie, but I partly agree, it's not Scorsese's best.
I like Hugo, especially for his beautiful hommage to George Méliès, but Scorsese did so much better (and he certainly did worse).
I think Michel Hazanavicius really deserves it. It's an incredible job. ;)
