@cpmotors well thats true, though I usually don't see a 496 as a street car engine so I assumed you were trying to build a race car. the biggest I see is 454.
@cpmotors he probably hasnt..... a friend of mine did that for me...i never had the chance to make such a move and try to still drive the car around. he had a '79 camaro z/28 with a hot 383 in it. TH350 and 4.11 gears. he buzzed around 3000rpms @ 55mph.
@cpmotors my dad actually had a 70 chevelle ss 396 car with a 427. i cant remember what all the specs were but he had 4.11 gears in his and got 6 mpg. he put well over $25,000 into it way back when and regrets the day he sold it. so to kinda answer your question, yes, people do use 4.11 gears in street cars. do you still have this car?
@cpmotors i have, makes first gear pretty useless but damn worth it mid way through the gears and on the top end, of course my experiences with 4.11's and 4.36 have been with a T-56, not an automatic.
@cpmotors nice runs, lucky they dont stop u because no cage/ or track-techs dont care where u run.. 3:73 or 4:11 u can still go hiway/ trust me, i have 488's in my 1970SS and still jump on hiway/ good luck

And just to clear up everyone trying to let me know 4:11 are streetable- I am well aware- have them in my car and have used from 2.73-4.56 gears in various vehicles. They have their place. It could be faster with some changes but again- its a street car, not a race car.
@cpmotors roger that, here in nyc its 11:99 or quicker needs cage, or i got my figures wrong? correct me if iam wrong? but anycase it runs tough, nice times, wht you launch it at?

@ajtoy454 Nope- "3500" stall flashed to about 4300 from idle, makes boatloads of torque in the area so doesnt need a brake. New setup will be getting a custom Coan converter to match roller cam and headwork I'm doing right now.
@cpmotors Oh..ok..now we talking...lol...4300 sounds nice !!! sounds like you hit prob 4800....or so..just wondering if your gunna use a 2-step "thats if a MSD use used" that would help alot... I wish you all luck on winter project....Al

Leah, congrats to you and your hubby on a great looking and running Chevelle! I have two myself! I think it's great that you are a girly gearhead, we need more of them!
That cam is pretty tame for a 496, very impressive hp/tq numbers. Can I ask how you broke-in your solid cam? Did you pull the inner springs for break-in then put them back in afterward or did you just fire it up and rev at 3000-3500 for approx. 20 minutes? I wanna try a solid but the break-in scares me.
Thanks for the kudos- yes the cam is very mild. Wanted to show how powerful a combination like that is in a heavy car.
HIGHLY recommend you remove the inner springs for break in. Prime the oil pump, filter and engine if you can before starting and make sure it starts w/o excess cranking. 2-3 revs and it should start if set right.
it does pretty good at the track havin the highway gears. better than a race car cause you can do 70 MPH and do it under 4000 rpm. nice car. more fun..less $
cool, we got 5500 stall, brake, and 2 step limiter. im just used to that sound... or seeing the whole car torque over when its loaded. your ol' ladies car is VERY NICE THOUGH!
That's a beautiful car. I've got a pic on my desktop of a '70 Chevelle with the same paint and styling. I'm looking into to getting a 1970 'Velle after I return from the desert. Are any of the older muscle cars a challenge for crotch-rockets?
not really but if you stick enough cash in them you can! but i wouldnt recomend a chevelle for haulin ass get something smaller like a camaro or vega or s10
naah man. im just kiding. i run like a 13.55 @108 . just gotta hassle the muscle cars. nice car though my dad used to have a 69 ss and sold it completly restored for$6900 12 yrs ago.
All he would have to do is convert his 302Ci to a 347Ci Stroker and if built right 550Hp with being tuned he could easily run 10's in the 1/4 mile since he car is very light.
that thing is awesome. congrats. im looking at getting one myself. sounds awesome when she gets on that gas. nothing like a big v8 to get you goin!!! (sounded like some people were running 4 bangers with turbos in the first few clips, how does this thing do against the ricer rockets??)
Damn those gears are really high, at least put 3.73's, they are good cursing gears but will give you a little more of the line speed. Nice car regardless.
Sounds like a Holley Blue pump with a 1/2 inch line and a regulater are needed. Maybe a cool can to chill the fuel. Got a transbrake? Is your rear gear better suited for ET than MPH? Have fun and enjoy your local track. We are losing ours after this year. What happens to all the street racers that ran their cars on our Street Program? This city of Calgary sucks!!!!
I sumped the tank, and have -08 line feeding the Carter MECHANICAL pump. LOW MAINTENANCE. No noisy electric pump, wiring, etc. TRANSBRAKE? Really? Did you read the description? Wifes car, drives alot, gets groceries, hauls the kids, no cage, bars, slicks, noisy mufflers, fiberglass, runs on pump gas?
The mild gears lets her cruise @ 2400rpm @ 60mph, no overdrive. Its suited for cruising, but works decent at the track.
"112 was due to several things-first that I was letting off before the traps-oops! Plus, still were running the factory mech. fuel pump & line. Changed that out for a HV pump, but still having issues of losing pressure. Looks like we will forego the mech pump for an electric one afterall & upgrade the rest of the fuel line. I'm tired of having a good launch only to then have to short shift gears & hope not to run out of fuel at the top end. Despite these issues I've run 115mph since. "
After 3 yrs, 5k street miles, 10 dyno pulls and 50+ runs at the track it runs good. The u-joint and yoke didnt take to well to trying to launch with the Powershot off the line, took out the trans as well when the joint broke. Went 11.07 @ 120 on 92 oct with the Powershot and walking it off the line. Good Luck with your build.
Weak?- Lower than I'd like but it is 3800 lbs. and has a 3.31 gear and 28" tire. Not exactly drag gearing. She tends to drive the car alot, as in 200 mile round trips. It's at 700 ft. where we run. It was also built as a MILD 496, as in easy on parts and low maintenance.
They have the 2.19/1.88 valves and mild pocket porting-thats it.
Oval vs Rectangle for the street depends on alot of things, engine size, compression, weight, rpm range, and whether or not they are OEM or aftermarket units- but in general the ovals are better.
hey i dont kno u, or ever seen u at the grove cause i havent been there in like a year but i was just looking for chevelle videos and saw this and that car is pretty sweet, my dad has that green with like a gold in it chevy roadster, u might not have seen us because we only race on summit super series weekends
also look at the gears there running 3.31's thats pretty high concidering how fast the car is. Its a pretty damn impressive car to me stick some 4.10s back there then see what happens. but they wanted it for the street to. plus I bet the top speed is pretty damn fast in that thing.
Love the car we also have a 70 along with 2 67 camaros, 57 vette, 67 vette. Wow 11.70s I don't think ours could keep up but I think it would be close.
I don't care what any of these kids say...I say wow. The showing of torque on that car is amazing. You just became my new teaching tool for torque! hahahaha. Nice car...pretty soon we'll see you in the 10's.
wow thats weak..548whp and running 11.7 with decent traction..wow and all you guys talk shit about imports. How bout talking shit about me running a 10.6 @140mph in my civic hatch..I have respect for any car thats built well but far to often i catch shit from these wannabe muscle head guys..wtf..power is power and if you can make it out of a 2.1L motor why not..WATCH MY VIDS 10.6 @ 140mph still working on traction a little..
That would be 548 bhp NOT WHP, haven't had the car on a chassis dyno. If u take the time 2 read our other comments, u'd note that this vid is also my first time racing @ the track - was running 8yr. old well-used slicks, stock fuel pump & running out of fuel, & that we built the car so I can drive it daily. I'm not too interested in putting in a cage & climbing over that in my heels & skirt to attend a MK appointment! However, my hubby does keep tempting me with a procharger...Leah
also, lets talk what kind of money is invested to get that kind of horsepower out of an import, and engine life twisting motor to 9800rpms, not to mention broken parts designed for a 150-200 hp four popper, it dont take much of a bbc to run 11.50-12.00, hence the low budget aspect. lets compare two engines with equal cash invested, on pro chargers site, they built a 505 pump gas budget motor that make like 1650 hp, its a waste of time arguing with these kids and they're imports
You must be thinking mostly of Honda motors. You're right to an extent; but on some imports it doesn't take much to run similar or substantial times. For example Mitsu's 4G63, Toyota's 2jz and 3sgte.
Thanks for assuming I put down your import. A Civic may not be my car of choice but I still admire the ability of small ci engines such as yours to produce big power. I'm guessing you run 30+ psi of boost, intercooled and shift past 8000 rpm? Whats a car like yours weigh, 2300 lbs? 140mph shows good HP, 10.6 says put down the Slurpee when shifting. I personally would like to have a STi to run around in for the snow here in southern Wisconsin. Pete
24psi and shifting at 9800rpms. I also am using old slicks with shitty compound. With bigger/new slicks and a little adjusting of the suspension my 60ft times should improve and a low 10 second pass should be no prob.. And as far as the Sti thing..Id say buy one.. I own a built 05 wrx wagon that made 360whp/308tq on 23psi and pump gas..AWD is the only way to go for daily driving..
Hey rodgazinya ya have to remember that this car is about 38 years old and to run in the 11s... well thats pretty good compared to your car that's maybe 10 years old at the most. if ya think your car's better, then, compared to the chevelle, it should run in the 6s huh. Big age difference there. So ah yeah and ah ricers or "tuners" sound like blenders
I guess but you really cant hate on this car its buildt for both street and strip if it was buildt to go fast they would strip down the interior lower the gears and use fiberglass body parts. of coarse your civic is faster than it its a hell of alot lighter and makes more power and looked like it had huge slicks on it. if it wasent faster than that would be pitiful. Im not hattin on your car just saying.
or you should shut up and not steroetypr..how bout watch me hit 140mph through the traps in what, Oh my "ricer" that I built with no sponsors and i can still stop on a dime and kill it through the turn on mile boost..
112 was due to several things-first that I was letting off before the traps-oops!
Thanks - the cam is Comp Cams XE274S, 236/242 @ .050", 110 LSA, .580" lift. It is mild, to allow me to drive it daily yet still run it at the track. I put about 1300+ miles on the car this summer. -Leah
Yes, I leave from an idle of 900 rpm. We have been working on how the car leaves, our best to date is a 1.61 on the DR's, with a 1.65 on average. Ok, but room for improvement.
First, nice video... You have done a great job on your car, and to be able to run that well on the strip and continue to get better each time is an accomplishment in itself... Then drive it to the race track with the family and then race with that kind of times is also nice. Keep up the good work man, my hat is off to you...
a friend has the RHS headed 454 we compared the 468 to and he had only approx 650 hp.... he took out the .708 cam because his flow actually peaked at about .600 and then fell off... where the AFR's didnt and allowed for more HP.... Brodix 2x are also a great head for the coin but in smaller CID their runners are to large and torque suffers badly..
man, I loved watching that chevelle eating that rice. The '70 chevelle is my fav. car in the world. I still would have liked to have seen that malibu's e/t that pulled the wheelie off the line. never the less, bad ass car man.
Indeed that is another Chevelle, whether or not it is an SS, not sure. As for the cost of my car, I got it 10 yrs. ago for a good deal. Between the motor & trans. the cost could be $7,000 alone, plus all the other little things such as rear end, exhaust, headers, rebuilding the suspension, wheels & tires...you have a head start at the age of 13 to save enough.
2 totally different motors... the 8.1 496 is totally non interchangeble with the mk4 gen5/6 blocks.... the gen 7 8.1 in trucks are weaklings compared to their mk4 brothern... they just dont have the head port sizing to really perform..
How I(Leah)ended up w/ that car. Wanted a 67 Camaro convert & I bought one. But was not running/driveable & after some thought, decided to sell it. I then got a 66 Chevelle w/396BBC, my daily driver, & drove/raced it for several years. Was decent but being a WI car, body was in bad shape. Began looking for more solid 66 car & found this 70. Sold SBC(yuck) & built 496BBC-love it!
Ive grown up round muscle cars, my Mom even had 69 Cuda in HS. Thanx for asking & have more vids coming.
Thanks, it has 3.5" head pipes into F/M BB mufflers with 3" tailpipes. This is just a basic combo of factory oval ports and a Comp XE274S cam. The small carb and stock mechanical pump are soon to be upgraded so we expect it to run a little harder this year.
get a solid ,,, hydraulics are for granny's... ;) the thing about AFR's is that there is a lonng waiting time for them as they ussually dont have a large stock, expect a 2-4 month wait from the factory.. but probably well worth it
It has a solid, just not a roller. The wait on AFR's is not an issue at the moment, it makes enough power for now. The bottle is still in the trunk from the small block if we get a little greedier......
also not true..... 2 sets of 315 AFR's in stock at the milton freewater OR Chevrolet dealer.... only time there is waiting lists is factory direct... and theie factory direct prices arent all that great..
RHS heads are weak heads compared to the AFR 315's.... there is an easy 100 hp difference in them... i have a 468 here with AFR 315 CNC ports with 12.75 :1 compression and a nice .708 lift comp solid roller and its 805 hp. with the same vic Jr...

Again, great ride!
MSH68 2 years ago
Thanks for the kudos- yes the cam is very mild. Wanted to show how powerful a combination like that is in a heavy car.
HIGHLY recommend you remove the inner springs for break in. Prime the oil pump, filter and engine if you can before starting and make sure it starts w/o excess cranking. 2-3 revs and it should start if set right.

it does pretty good at the track havin the highway gears. better than a race car cause you can do 70 MPH and do it under 4000 rpm. nice car. more fun..less $
jasonbc69 2 years ago
you should add some higher pressure valve springs and some other stuff so you can wind that girl up to 8 and 9 grand! then you will see better times!

I run that in my car. check it out. search sctrep
sctrep 2 years ago
Your right, its not real fast for a big block. Wasnt built to be fast, it was built for low maintenance, reliable fun.
There's not a chance your 302/240Z runs that. I'd even bet it cant crack the 12's.
Prove me wrong.
cpmotors 2 years ago
All he would have to do is convert his 302Ci to a 347Ci Stroker and if built right 550Hp with being tuned he could easily run 10's in the 1/4 mile since he car is very light.

Steve340 2 years ago
Damn those gears are really high, at least put 3.73's, they are good cursing gears but will give you a little more of the line speed. Nice car regardless.
JetForceF22 2 years ago
Sounds like a Holley Blue pump with a 1/2 inch line and a regulater are needed. Maybe a cool can to chill the fuel. Got a transbrake? Is your rear gear better suited for ET than MPH? Have fun and enjoy your local track. We are losing ours after this year. What happens to all the street racers that ran their cars on our Street Program? This city of Calgary sucks!!!!
boss351dude 3 years ago
I sumped the tank, and have -08 line feeding the Carter MECHANICAL pump. LOW MAINTENANCE. No noisy electric pump, wiring, etc. TRANSBRAKE? Really? Did you read the description? Wifes car, drives alot, gets groceries, hauls the kids, no cage, bars, slicks, noisy mufflers, fiberglass, runs on pump gas?
The mild gears lets her cruise @ 2400rpm @ 60mph, no overdrive. Its suited for cruising, but works decent at the track.
Sorry to hear your losing your track-
cpmotors 3 years ago
Pretty weak MPH. My 306 ran 12.7@ 107.44 Mph at 3400 feet. A 496 you say? Hope that was in Colorado.
boss351dude 3 years ago
Read
"112 was due to several things-first that I was letting off before the traps-oops! Plus, still were running the factory mech. fuel pump & line. Changed that out for a HV pump, but still having issues of losing pressure. Looks like we will forego the mech pump for an electric one afterall & upgrade the rest of the fuel line. I'm tired of having a good launch only to then have to short shift gears & hope not to run out of fuel at the top end. Despite these issues I've run 115mph since. "
pummel454 3 years ago
I would like to know how the car is running still. I am putting together a 496 Tall Deck..and looking at the same set up.
pummel454 3 years ago
After 3 yrs, 5k street miles, 10 dyno pulls and 50+ runs at the track it runs good. The u-joint and yoke didnt take to well to trying to launch with the Powershot off the line, took out the trans as well when the joint broke. Went 11.07 @ 120 on 92 oct with the Powershot and walking it off the line. Good Luck with your build.
cpmotors 3 years ago
Weak?- Lower than I'd like but it is 3800 lbs. and has a 3.31 gear and 28" tire. Not exactly drag gearing. She tends to drive the car alot, as in 200 mile round trips. It's at 700 ft. where we run. It was also built as a MILD 496, as in easy on parts and low maintenance.

Did you do alot to the oval port heads? Bigger valves, port work, etc.? Is oval better than rectangular for the street?
1970cheveller 3 years ago
They have the 2.19/1.88 valves and mild pocket porting-thats it.
Oval vs Rectangle for the street depends on alot of things, engine size, compression, weight, rpm range, and whether or not they are OEM or aftermarket units- but in general the ovals are better.

also look at the gears there running 3.31's thats pretty high concidering how fast the car is. Its a pretty damn impressive car to me stick some 4.10s back there then see what happens. but they wanted it for the street to. plus I bet the top speed is pretty damn fast in that thing.

wow thats weak..548whp and running 11.7 with decent traction..wow and all you guys talk shit about imports. How bout talking shit about me running a 10.6 @140mph in my civic hatch..I have respect for any car thats built well but far to often i catch shit from these wannabe muscle head guys..wtf..power is power and if you can make it out of a 2.1L motor why not..WATCH MY VIDS 10.6 @ 140mph still working on traction a little..
rodgazinya 4 years ago
That would be 548 bhp NOT WHP, haven't had the car on a chassis dyno. If u take the time 2 read our other comments, u'd note that this vid is also my first time racing @ the track - was running 8yr. old well-used slicks, stock fuel pump & running out of fuel, & that we built the car so I can drive it daily. I'm not too interested in putting in a cage & climbing over that in my heels & skirt to attend a MK appointment! However, my hubby does keep tempting me with a procharger...Leah
cpmotors 4 years ago
also, lets talk what kind of money is invested to get that kind of horsepower out of an import, and engine life twisting motor to 9800rpms, not to mention broken parts designed for a 150-200 hp four popper, it dont take much of a bbc to run 11.50-12.00, hence the low budget aspect. lets compare two engines with equal cash invested, on pro chargers site, they built a 505 pump gas budget motor that make like 1650 hp, its a waste of time arguing with these kids and they're imports
astuddlee1 2 years ago
You must be thinking mostly of Honda motors. You're right to an extent; but on some imports it doesn't take much to run similar or substantial times. For example Mitsu's 4G63, Toyota's 2jz and 3sgte.
ImportDreams500 1 year ago
Thanks for assuming I put down your import. A Civic may not be my car of choice but I still admire the ability of small ci engines such as yours to produce big power. I'm guessing you run 30+ psi of boost, intercooled and shift past 8000 rpm? Whats a car like yours weigh, 2300 lbs? 140mph shows good HP, 10.6 says put down the Slurpee when shifting. I personally would like to have a STi to run around in for the snow here in southern Wisconsin. Pete
cpmotors 4 years ago
24psi and shifting at 9800rpms. I also am using old slicks with shitty compound. With bigger/new slicks and a little adjusting of the suspension my 60ft times should improve and a low 10 second pass should be no prob.. And as far as the Sti thing..Id say buy one.. I own a built 05 wrx wagon that made 360whp/308tq on 23psi and pump gas..AWD is the only way to go for daily driving..
rodgazinya 4 years ago
Hey rodgazinya ya have to remember that this car is about 38 years old and to run in the 11s... well thats pretty good compared to your car that's maybe 10 years old at the most. if ya think your car's better, then, compared to the chevelle, it should run in the 6s huh. Big age difference there. So ah yeah and ah ricers or "tuners" sound like blenders
jimmy891 4 years ago
I bet that motor and all parts arent 38yrs old. For the record, a "Ricer" is the owner of the car not the car itself..That term is so overused.
rodgazinya 4 years ago
so your civic isint streetable at all who the hell would want to ride or be seen in that thing?
disturbedproject 4 years ago
alot of people thats why there on the street..And yes my car is very streetable with 23mpg on 18psi..
rodgazinya 4 years ago
I guess but you really cant hate on this car its buildt for both street and strip if it was buildt to go fast they would strip down the interior lower the gears and use fiberglass body parts. of coarse your civic is faster than it its a hell of alot lighter and makes more power and looked like it had huge slicks on it. if it wasent faster than that would be pitiful. Im not hattin on your car just saying.

112 was due to several things-first that I was letting off before the traps-oops! Plus, still were running the factory mech. fuel pump & line. If you don't mind how big is the cam?I am building a 489 and I have watched your videos alot.I love the way this car runs and sounds.
1970cheveller 4 years ago
Thanks - the cam is Comp Cams XE274S, 236/242 @ .050", 110 LSA, .580" lift. It is mild, to allow me to drive it daily yet still run it at the track. I put about 1300+ miles on the car this summer. -Leah
cpmotors 4 years ago
Leah,What kind of 60ft. times are you getting? It sounds like you leave off idle and that car makes a move.AWESOME!!!
1970cheveller 4 years ago
Yes, I leave from an idle of 900 rpm. We have been working on how the car leaves, our best to date is a 1.61 on the DR's, with a 1.65 on average. Ok, but room for improvement.
cpmotors 4 years ago
First, nice video... You have done a great job on your car, and to be able to run that well on the strip and continue to get better each time is an accomplishment in itself... Then drive it to the race track with the family and then race with that kind of times is also nice. Keep up the good work man, my hat is off to you...

a friend has the RHS headed 454 we compared the 468 to and he had only approx 650 hp.... he took out the .708 cam because his flow actually peaked at about .600 and then fell off... where the AFR's didnt and allowed for more HP.... Brodix 2x are also a great head for the coin but in smaller CID their runners are to large and torque suffers badly..

freebird199 4 years ago
Indeed that is another Chevelle, whether or not it is an SS, not sure. As for the cost of my car, I got it 10 yrs. ago for a good deal. Between the motor & trans. the cost could be $7,000 alone, plus all the other little things such as rear end, exhaust, headers, rebuilding the suspension, wheels & tires...you have a head start at the age of 13 to save enough.
cpmotors 4 years ago
Since when did chevy make a 496? I thought the biggest they made was a 454.
purplehaze0120 4 years ago
454 bored .060" over with +.25" stroker crank = 496cu in. A 496 is also now available in new GM trucks. GM also sells 572's as crate engines.

freebird199 4 years ago
2 totally different motors... the 8.1 496 is totally non interchangeble with the mk4 gen5/6 blocks.... the gen 7 8.1 in trucks are weaklings compared to their mk4 brothern... they just dont have the head port sizing to really perform..

Your wife is awesome and has VERY good tastes in muscle cars.
I wish my mom had a chevelle....but no...she uses a Ford Windstar to buy her groceries.
How did your wife end up with that car?
mad props to her.
arghidontknow 4 years ago
How I(Leah)ended up w/ that car. Wanted a 67 Camaro convert & I bought one. But was not running/driveable & after some thought, decided to sell it. I then got a 66 Chevelle w/396BBC, my daily driver, & drove/raced it for several years. Was decent but being a WI car, body was in bad shape. Began looking for more solid 66 car & found this 70. Sold SBC(yuck) & built 496BBC-love it!
Ive grown up round muscle cars, my Mom even had 69 Cuda in HS. Thanx for asking & have more vids coming.

Doublev27 4 years ago
Thanks, it has 3.5" head pipes into F/M BB mufflers with 3" tailpipes. This is just a basic combo of factory oval ports and a Comp XE274S cam. The small carb and stock mechanical pump are soon to be upgraded so we expect it to run a little harder this year.
cpmotors 4 years ago
please throw a solid roller in it and a set of RHS 320 cc alluminum heads...my 489 made 602 horse and 594 ft lbs... and a victor jr.
454440 4 years ago
If we go that route it may get some AFR heads and maybe a bigger cam.
cpmotors 4 years ago
get a solid ,,, hydraulics are for granny's... ;) the thing about AFR's is that there is a lonng waiting time for them as they ussually dont have a large stock, expect a 2-4 month wait from the factory.. but probably well worth it
454440 4 years ago
It has a solid, just not a roller. The wait on AFR's is not an issue at the moment, it makes enough power for now. The bottle is still in the trunk from the small block if we get a little greedier......
cpmotors 4 years ago
also not true..... 2 sets of 315 AFR's in stock at the milton freewater OR Chevrolet dealer.... only time there is waiting lists is factory direct... and theie factory direct prices arent all that great..
150aintenuff 4 years ago
RHS heads are weak heads compared to the AFR 315's.... there is an easy 100 hp difference in them... i have a 468 here with AFR 315 CNC ports with 12.75 :1 compression and a nice .708 lift comp solid roller and its 805 hp. with the same vic Jr...
150aintenuff 4 years ago
i wouldnt say they were 'weak' but not as good as AFR's and ya get what ya pay for..
