  • I hate CBA, but this was a great ad. Very clever and props to Bay for self depreciation.

  • I hate bank ads. Always the same plot: A quirky and neurotic idiot who loves his bank/customers, but it does not matter that he has completely lost the plot, because the bank/customer relationship is built upon "understanding" and "friendliness".

So much for that "understanding" and "friendliness" during every financial crisis/foreclosure, eh? Assholes.

  • a good motto for all banks would be "SLAVERY FOR ALL FOREVER" YOU BUY A HOUSE $230,000, YOU END UP PAYING ABOUT $500,000. TALK ABOUT HIGHWAY ROBBERY.

If our pays werent reliant on goin straight into banks, we wouldnt need the fuckers, and we'd save a shitload of money in fees etc. fuck u corporate pigs. your all scum

  • cool clip thanks for sharing ..

  • So let me get this right Commonwealth Bank CEO Ralph Norris is on 16.2 million Dollars a year, for running the most overpriced unprofessional Bank in Australia?? O.K.. so how much would a GOOD CEO who runs a decent bank make a year? because Norris much like the bank he runs, its CRAP!..

  • It's hard to decide who is worse... Michael Bay or CBA marketing wankers...

  • Commonwealth Bank, generous philanthropists. Your executives are the biggest recipients of your kind donations.

  • Commonwealth Bank, generous philanthropists. Your executives are the biggest recipients of their kind donations.

  • joke. garbage - 1900's we had gangsters 2000's we have banksters. both crims.

  • Why is this so offensive?? its hilarious!! the only one who should be offended is Michael Bay and he's having heaps of fun!! Bloody brilliantly entertaining and it managed to put the bank in peoples memory!

  • i am australian and i actually love the first 30 seconds of this - so brutal!

  • i feel like this ad might be racist against americans, kinda saying they're dumb....or at least don't know much about marketing, it's always on tv in australia and it's starting to piss me off, especially the like 10 follow up ads pretty much conveying the same message about americans.

  • You laaeeiiiike? LOL.. cracked me up... love the badass Koalas!

  • Ha Ha HA. Arent these just the best? We love these commericals. They are white Americans, so thats alright. They always show us as convicts etc, so its 'tit for tat'. Except yanks forget that the english used to send the convicts to Usa until the War of Independance in 1776!!!!! So thats why they had to come here in 1788. They got more convict descendants over there than we have, but its nothing anyway, They got transported for taking a slice of bread usually.

  • On behalf of all Australians out their..... that is not what we are like

  • @KillSwitch66627 Who are you kidding? That's exactly what we're like!

  • imagine if that ad in this ad was the real deal.... lol so bad its good..... reminds me of mad max starring paul hogan ..... it actually did kindof give me goosebump hahaha i agree with that guy

  • HeHa wrong one.

  • Man i feel like bashing up that little piece of shit kid i'll slice his bloody head off.

  • what a load of shit those cunts are

  • Post Crash New Voice Over - Determined, we built a bank, and ROBBED YOU SHEEP FRICKEN BLIND, Determined we ask the question: anyone else got any money left?

  • "I used 7 helicopters."

  • I would bank at this bank if only because Michael Bay did the ad...love him!

  • That's because you're an idiot.

  • no, actually the comment was facetious. I don't base my banking decisions on commercials, regardless of how much I enjoy them. I do like Michael Bay though.

Eloquent comment though...good job on that.

  • dont call people idiots... why cant we just be friends... I DONT GET IT IM ONLY 17

  • ASB,ANZ, westpac under Commonwealth Bank

they are suck and Commonwealth Bank suck too :-)

  • i think they're really funny. The newer ones are great as well, just the reactions and responses from the bank reps crack me up.

  • it's suposed to be a joke... haha i love it

  • and a thumbs up to you sir.

  • Comment removed

  • i hate this ad with a passion.

i will never, ever join commonwealth bank after this.

  • I hate that bank but I love this ad,

I mean come on, where else are you gonna see Koala's in a Mad Max style gang?

    F***ing brilliant

  • Pearl Harbor sucks.

  • Hi Guys :)

I play Bass for The Cover Up we're featured in the new Commonwealth Bank Ad.

We wanted to say Thank You to everyone in Australia who have been very kind to us.

    -Justin

  • where the fuck can i find its branch in the U.S.?

  • there is a few in new york

  • too bad i live in california.

  • Somebody should upload that, I wanna show my friend.

  • does anyone know where i can find any info on the newest ad thats out... its the one with the heavy metal band in it..... I NEED TO KNOW WHAT BAND IT IS PLEASE HELP ME!!!

  • same haha

  • i just found it after i came to this URL... they are called the cover up

  • do you know what songs they do in the ad by any chance. i cant find a url for it

  • no i dont sorry

  • just go to there myspace. the second song on there myspace page is the first song that is played on the add. and the love song would probably be on there also. I only listened to the first 2 songs. they are pretty good

  • yeah, the 'love song' is called 'flight of the century'

  • theyre called the cover up. theyre awesome :P

  • I heard today that the big tall guy in it ( if there is one ) is a guy at my work. I need to see his ad to concur to his statement!

  • only one word can describe this...AWESOME

  • Watch the commercial for Verizon FIOS featuring Michael Bay, then everyone will understand why they chose Michael Bay to be in the commercial. It's not about how Americans see Australians, it's a self parody about Michael Bay.

ok now i am his wife. like we are gonna know who michael bay is and what verizon is.... um no!

whatever... it just shows us that they are stereotypical and they are stupid for that.so in a way we are making fun of americans. yay australia. stuff america!

  • Try not to be so serious. Take some joker out of it.

Dam, I don't get offended with the Hakka-when the kiwis do the get fucked single.

  • Seriously it's only a joke and Australian's aren't elitist. I think people should take it for what it is just a funny amusing commercial that makes it's point well.

  • Goodby Silverstein & Partners. Wow, they're actually an American Ad Agency. I found this ad pretty funny the first time I saw it. Don't see anything wrong with this. Don't understand what everyone is complaining about.

  • Am i the only one who find these ads slightly demeaning and a bit elitist. I know the concept they're trying to point out is to keep it simple and non-exagerated but more-so the point of hey look American's are idiots and Australians are bettar! As if Australia doesn't have enough discrimination, this ads just promoting that train of thought imo.

  • It's not bagging on Americans so much as it's bagging on Michael Bay. I can get behind that initiative. Of course, from the ad, it looks like he can too. It's cool when someone can laugh at himself.

  • These ads are shite. I can just imagine the people who made these pitching it and saying look it's funny because it's like this meeting here now. Self indulgent rubbish. Worst ads ever!

  • this add is awesome

  • for those who are p!ssed off with the ad, for a minute of footage, it's not worth writing a book about. It's a good ad! Try not to be determined to be gay.

  • I like

  • i like the ad and it looks to be working with so many people talking about it, i mean thats what ares are there for to get the product out there

  • This ad sucks balls. It's a damn shame commonwealth didn't lose more on the Sub Prime collapse.

They can take their world record high fees and shove them up their bloated arses. Their branches look like they haven't been cleaned in a decade. They still can't afford cleaners.

  • Most of the talk is about finding the joke/taking the piss or is it good ad or bad ad.

One thing we need to clarify on is has it worked for the client/or has the Ad agency only looked to meet short term goals of brief?

I do believe CBA was trying to sell its image not products. Obviously CBA wants to change it's brand perception as it has been mentioned as outdated. Has it done it?

If yes would this change your view on CBA/if not then the ad has not succeeded for the Client.

  • You guys arent listening to the whole thing.. You are only looking at the small picture! Why dont you open your ears and listen to what they are saying, and then you will understand why CBA is one of the biggest banks in AUS.

  • Guess what bank execs, you're still a shit bank. If banks were hookers, you'd be a crack whore.

Go learn to be a better bank rather than giving us bullshit advertising trying to make you look cool.

  • Is than bloke Brandon Flowers form the Killers sure does look like him

  • what

  • what

  • yawn, yawn, is this sup to be funny?

  • I think its funny. BTW someone asked who the banker chick was, it's Tempany Deckert who was in Home and Away AGES ago as Selina.

  • The whole CBA account is worth $50-odd million, That spot was probably a few million out of that.

  • the add cost 55 million to make....

  • 55 million to make? Are you serious? That's about 10 times more than a decent budget Australian film. 55 Million? And that's just the production, not the actual placement advertising costs?

Which bank is really shit with it's own money, so you know must be even worse with *yours*?

    The commoncrap bank.

  • whoever told you that cost 50+ million in production has their wires crossed - it couldnt be worth more then 5 mil for the creative AND the production. The other 45 mil would be the media spend

  • You're missing the point. Why would a shit bank spend money fleeced from it's customers to tell the world lies about how it's not actually as shit as it actually is instead of investing that money in...I dunno, BEING A BETTER BANK.

The Commonwealth bank is the bank of last resort. It's the 2 dollar crack whore of the financial big boys.

Plus it's a shit ad that tries to make them look cool. It fails on all counts.

  • dude what are you talking about? Every bank has to advertise, thats how it works. One bank puts out a big campaign, the rest are working on their answer to it. If commonwealth decided not to make this campaign and instead put the 50 million into improving the bank it'd probably mean one extra stapler for each staff member. In terms of running a bank as big as commonwealth 50 million is diddly squat.

  • Hello Commbank PR staff.

  • took you 10 minutes to come up with that?

  • "took you 10 minutes to come up with that?"

Took me 5 seconds actually. I was just out busy having a life.

Wonder how much they pay you to be such an apologist grovel monkey for their financial raping of their customer base.

  • Jesus, so your father sucked you wee wee when you were a child, no reason vent that anger onto an ad.

  • Commonwealth Bank PR man, it's funny you should talk about the sucking of penis. Isn't that your actual profession?

Apologizing for corporate stupidity. Now that's pretty much the bottom of the barrel.

  • Alright dousche bag, since your so anti-corporations what have you done lately? Do you live in a commune, are you on an organic computer that you grew yourself? C'mon fuckface, tell everyone how proactive you are in ridding the world of corporations, tell us on youtube, (a corporation) using your computer (Corporation supported by parts and services from many corporations). Bitching about corporations is pathetic.

Or you can come at me with another lame ass come back.

  • You really do seem very attached to the bank. And not in a healthy way. It's a damn shame you can't contribute more to the human race than defend parasites.

But don't mind me. I just run my own company, travel the world and actually improve people's lives in genuine ways. And yet still make a profit. Instead of being a leach like your mummy here. Suck that teat boy, you seem to enjoy the corporations.

If you actually did some research on how thinks worked, you might not come across so naive.

  • I guess you could say your "determined to be different." Give the people a reason to believe you. Saying you "improve people's lives in genuine ways. And yet still make a profit" Doesn't mean anything, thats what all the "devil corporations" do, they say their one way but don't back it up.

  • Wow. It's almost like you're assuming I have to somehow justify myself for a few Youtube comments about a shitty bank and their shitty ad.

Sadly for you, my child, I do not.

Enjoy suckling that corporate teat. The people here assume they're paying you well in some PR firm over there. Not everyone is stupid.

  • You sure showed me, you couldn't say one legitimate thing you do to "improve peoples lives." I have absolutely no affiliation with the bank, I don't even live in Australia, but im sick of people bitching about how corporations are so bad as they sit in front of their computer blasting death metal.

  • Do you really not see how naive it is to say "you're assuming I have to somehow justify myself ." You don't have to prove shit to me, or youtube, the fact the you couldn't say anything proves enough. It's even more pathetic because you don't see that saying something but not having to justify it is exactly what those nasty corporations do. Fuck you, you pathetic piece shit. Done

  • both of you are faggots. And this add is great

  • ur both douche bags

  • wtf?

  • I think it's a great ad, pity it's come out when the banks gone and screwed it's customers over so badly.

  • it was a fucking awsome add. wow everyone allready noes that the howard government fucked up pretty bad and interest rates are ridiculous like theyre going to shove that into our faces in an add.

"bdub44 Yeah, great idea, target 15 year olds and alienate those who actually have money..."

my 50 yr old dad who does actually have money fucking loved it.

    get a life retards.

  • just shit. period.

didn't make me laugh, didn't make me cry, didn't make me think.

    An Australian.

  • koala bears.....driving armored dune buggys? awesome!!!!

  • lol michael bay is cool.

  • I love this ad, the intro is pure comedy gold. Pity about the whole interest rates thing.

  • This really makes me want to trust my money with the Commonwealth...

I can't believe this was signed off, being courageous is one thing but this is retarded!

  • Hmm seems to be a lot of negative reponse to this ad in terms of its effectiveness-

"I wouldn't trust my money to a company who has fun with their ads. etc. etc"

Haven't you noticed that every other bank is suddenly going down the road of similarly soft-selling, brand building ads with 'personality'? Obviously they are working. Not many bank ads of old sparked any interest or discussion, where as this ad is proliferating and worth much more then they spent on the placements.

  • Finally, some logic.

  • Advertises caught talking to themselves yet again. I'm sure they all loved it at the ad firm, it speaks to them personally but everyday Australians won't be running to the Commonwealth Bank to open up an account because Michael Bay used 7 helicopters. What a complete waste of time and money.

Here's a clue marketers, if your sponsoring the cricket and want to make an ad to show during the cricket maybe, it might've been a good idea to make an ad that references cricket in some way. Clueless.

  • i actually auditioned for this ad in New York. When i was at the casting I knew it wouldn't sit well with Australians.

Watch out, I auditioned for the radio spots yesterday, and their even WORSE!

  • hyperpiper I can't get to the blog. can you post the url?

  • for some reason i can't. try theagencygirl dot blogspot dot com

  • You have to read the blog. It's bloody hilarious.

  • I think I found a blog about this. look for the username theagencygirl on blogspot.

  • I respect michael bay as a director too (except for Transformers, Pearl Harbor, The Rock,

    Playboy Video Centerfold: Kerri Kendal,

Bad Boys, Shadows and Light: From a Different View, Great White: My...My...My...the Video Collection, Bad Boys II.....oh heck, lets throw in armaggeddon, although that was his best)the whole point was to show how stupid a big budget ad would be for a bank hence the "just the last two seconds" line. I like it when directors have a sense of humor about themselves...

  • I thought it was also about how Australia kinda thinks America is a little too "big" in everything/

  • Gosh, that is truly tragic. Not only is the "Fake ad" tragic, but the WHOLE ad is unfunny and tragic.

  • I have to agree with John Singleton, if the bank wanted a shit ad, they didn't have to go to America.

  • Good ad.

  • I think it's a crack up! lmao!

  • I don't get it - are they trying to position the bank as out of touch DELIBERATELY?

Or is this just an attempt at humour gone horribly wrong?

  • you are a complete moron.

  • i wish that was my backyard.

  • i respect michael bay as a director (except for pearl harbour & armagedon)

but this is an australian bank not american, we have amazing talented directors who dont get opportunities & its sad to see large aussie corporations putting faith in the US..

  • I think that you should get a life and think from more of a global standpoint. Stop being a bogan and learn to respect things no matter where they are directed.

  • i think it works, the ad is 'determined to be different' and it's got people talking.

not saying i like it though. the seriousness of the marketing team at the end does not help their image. i find them lame and representative of the bland cardboard stereotype of the corporate banker.

if the last bit was bit more funny, i wouldve like it. instead it ended on an awkward note. why do they have to be so serious?

  • I cant believe so many people missed the joke, how can you take this seriously its meant to be over the top, its meant to be corny, good fucking lord some people are stupid!

  • Shitty ad for a shitty bank. Bay is an egotystical maniac. Not surprising the Commonwealth bank would use them.

I wouldn't piss on Commbank if they were on fire. Their branches always look grubby and dirty and 10 years out of date, ever noticed?

  • *slaps forehead* you missed the joke entirely! Do you think that was an actual marketing meeting?

    SHEESH!

  • Crikey said in web article that they used the real cars from mad max and then destroyed them. Ass holes destoyed movie car history. If my home loan wasnt fixed for 5 years til 2011 at 7.36% i would find another bank. Now iam costing them money Hahahahaha

  • WTF?

  • Good lord what is the fuss about? It's a joke. Not a brilliant one, but above average for the form. They are taking the piss. Out of them selves and their ad agency. Arguing that it is a waste of 50 mil is an argument about all advertising. Have that one out by all means.

  • Agreed. 90% of these posters fail at Point Getting.

  • I think the AD Agency `really` repesenting CBA are taking the `michael` out of themselves at their own mode of operandus CBA'S real AD Agency are pretentious dickheads not so much naval gazing, but looking up their own butts ...bankers

  • I don't get it, and I'm a big fan of koalas, mad max, and clever ads.

  • I am in marketing as well.

what the hell were they thinking is right!

Anyone who actually works in the industry would know that the marketing team would have shut that down at story board stage. It doesnt' make sense. Not clever and easily misinerpreted as a 'big waste of money'. not on brand and who is their target market? And then they put up their interest rates!

Fire your agency ComBank. - its crap.

  • WankerSmurf, I guess the name says it all

    total fuckwit..your middle name right?

  • I really like it. I don't care what anyone says. Shove it up your ass. It made me smile.

(except for the terrible performances of the people playing the bank guys -- they were pants.)

  • I like the girl that isn't talking at the end. Who is she?

  • Totally shit, irrelevant and tired. At a time when they're hiking up interest rates, hurting us with fees and telling us they're 'determined to be different' - I'd like to say; don't crap on about it guys, just BE different. Start by eradicating your fucking bank charges for being $14 overdrawn. Good to see where my fee went. It's a complete load of wank. Heads should roll for this or I'm walking from a 20 year relationship with CBA. Wankers.

  • I'm not sure, but she looks like Selina from Home and Away.. Her Name is Tempany Deckert. Yeah??

  • who is the chick in this ad? i'm really annoyed i can't figure it out

  • Forget You Tube and imagine how the average Aussie would see it . Americans taking the piss out of our symbols ? Whats an advertising agency? Whos Michael Bay? Will they believe the CBA can laugh at themselves instead of being a ripoff bank The oldies will think the bank executives are a bunch of Wallys who waste money If it wont win accounts then its just expensive wank

Bring back the best bank campaign ever from the 1980's

" Would a bank manager...... Campaign Palace brilliance

  • wow, cba must be trying to get gen X and Yers here.

is this an attempt at satire? (is that the right word?)

im pretty sure the whole point of this ad is to remove most of the bad publicity that banks have had over the last few years.

by the looks of it, it hasnt worked, they either over estimate or underestimated the intellegence og most australians.

  • LOL love it especially because I'm in marketing!

  • Fvcking hilarious!

    Australia so rocks.

  • Awesome work. This is obviously the start of something. I guess we're going to see more of these guys. I read in the papers tha the ad industry people don't seem to find this funny... guess they wouldn't since they're the but of the joke. I reckon the public will find it funny... taking the piss out of ad wankers!! and from a boring old bank who would've thought it.

  • Awesome work. This is obviously the start of something bigger. I guess we're going to see more of these characters. I read in the papers that the ad people don't seem to find it at all funny... guess they wouldn't since they're the butt of the joke. I reckon the public will find it funny... taking the piss out of ad wankers!! and from a boring old bank who would've thought it.

  • OMG some of you people have got to be kidding right? The Joke is that the bank does not want this flashy ad, they don't feel the need to spend up big on gimmicks but they do like the tag line 'determined to be different'. It wasn't actually made in America, that is a studio in Australia with actors from Australia. The whole thing is an ad

'Why would anyone go to the US to make an ad for Aussies'

  • Thankyou...You hit the nail on the head right there !!! If viewers cannot see the point it is delivering then advertisers really need to "dumb" down their productions that are flashed across our screens. sheeesshhh.

  • Well, Michael Bay is a real director/producer (tranformers among other things) and they really did create that over the top ad, even if it was tongue in cheek. so they kinda... did... make a flashy ad.

  • Wow! You guys are getting really worked up about this. You know this ad is actually really effective coz its done exactly what it needed you to do. Look it up. Watch it. talk about it. Eg. 1st guy: seen that new ad? 2nd Guy: Which ad? 1st Guy: the Michael bay one. 2nd guy: Whats it for? 1st guy: Commonwealth bank! Mission accomplished. Look at sponser signs at the cricket or footy. Not just there to keep the ball in. Chris and Marie and Carlton have even done their job by you guys bringin it up.

  • Honest to god, thats the worst thing I have ever seen. Monday morning, I'm switching to Bank SA. Honestly, I'm jumping ship!

  • It is so obvious that the people at the CBA are stupidly bored. It is an irrelevant bank and is a decade behind. Why would anyone go to the US to make an ad for Aussies, what is next Russia, Afganistan. They are just wasting money and showing their incompetence in the subject.

  • I love this. It makes me slightly less resentful about how much of my bank fees went towards its creation.

  • I get the joke.

    It's crap.

Yes, it's memorable - in a bad way.

It's like those excruciating radio ads where you hear the recording engineer "directing" the actors.

Apparently, tha last people who should write a piss take on Americans are Americans - or these Americans, at least.

Plus, a lot of Australians will actually care that a US agency is doing the work, and they won't likeit.

And the 99% of Australians who didn't know about it now do. Dumb on every level.

  • Forget the joke and whether you get it or not.

The question is whether it is a good ad? I don't expect people to be clamouring to join Comm Bank after this. So, no. Bad idea, no busines effect, bad ad.

But then I hated the Carlton Big Ad which was popular (it didn't help beer sales but won Awards, for what it's worth).

  • Do you expect people to be clamouring to join Commonwealth after ANY of their ads?

Ads like this are always welcome during ad breaks. Sure it has no business effect but I sure do prefer to see koalas driving mad-max style buggies around than Chris and Marie blabbing on about plants like a bunch of pants-on-head retards.

  • Interesting point about the ads being a welcome break from the programming. Maybe more ads to be run, means more money for the programmes to make some programmes worth watching?

  • Does that mean that CBA is subsidicing an ad agency to get noticed (win awards) in OZ? , what is the deal behind this stupidity, it is an amaturish skit.

  • It's pretty funny, i guess ignorant people don't understand humor

  • Mate we get the ad but this is so crap it cannot be quantified. Piss-take of Americans - yeah ok, but what the fuck does that have to do with banking. It's just another ad made by "Goodby Silverstein & Partners" who seem to be "determined to be different". Forget the client - we need an award winner!

The fact that most of these post try so hard to explain the ad simply tells us; the agency is involved and trying desperately to convince us (Australian's) - "THIS AD IS SIMPLY HILARIOUS".

  • you seem determined to be an ass

  • Regardless you wont forget it and as a result its done its job well.

  • How many other Australian bank advertisements have you watched on Youtube and commented on before. Seems to me that this ad was worth every penny. It has grabbed people's attention and has got people talking.

  • Yeah, got people talking about an ad so rubbish that you think "if you could possibly think this is a good idea you aren't looking after my money".

  • You people on here are so fucking dumb. Its a pisstake at how Americans perceive Australia and how Australia is all like "lolwut?"

  • this is what happens when you let michael bay touch something

  • The ad doesn't change my opinion that the CBA is Australia's most dodgy bank.

  • Are all the people banging on about how good this is from the agency involved / Commbank?

I hope they are going somewhere with this, its a bit self indulgent

  • did you guys miss the Mad Max reference or something? This is a piss take at AMERICANS, not Australians. I mean, if you look at it, the Americans now look stupid at the hands of three employees with stoic looks on their faces. They've put every misconception they know about Australia into the ad, and where has it got them? Nowhere. The only thing worth anything to the employees at all is the tagline.

  • They had to go off shore as advertising agencies in Aust. are coping each other and play it safe.

This is original, fresh and damn right HILARIOUS!!!

Hey if I was 15, I would want to bank with CBA after this ad. THAT'S THE POINT!!!!

  • Yeah, great idea, target 15 year olds and alienate those who actually have money...

  • They are the future, you are the past...

  • I'm amazed so many have missed the joke!!! LOL

  • This ad is awesome. I wanna go work for Jeff.

  • elvishkat your right on the money! It's refreshing to see another bank not taking themselves too seriously. ANZ have been doing it for awhile thanks to M&C Saatchi. I can't believe some of you think this is supposed to be serious - it's a piss-take. And no this commercial wouldn't have cost that much to produce compared (most was in a studio) to ads like the QANTAS one were they flew an entire choir around the world shooting in dozens of different countries.

  • Who's the girl at 0:56 who says "Only the last 2 seconds"? Is it Selenaa (Tempany Deckert) from Home and Away?

  • Wow - what an overindulgent wank. That would be the most expensive soggy sao competition I've ever seen. Banks really have their heads wedged so far up their arses these days that they are in an alternate reality.

  • As an Australian, this is GOLD. Don't you criticising people realise we find Michael Bay a joke these days? All he does is blow stuff up, and it's halarious he's making fun of himself.

As for the image of the company, it's creating an image of it as a company that doesn't deal in bull and doesn't want crazy, Hollywood, big-budget, overstated ads.

    GOLD people.

  • no, as an Australian, it shit mate.

  • As another Australian, it
