Though, for the record (I'm not trying to get into a debate again or anything, I'd rather enjoy the music), werewolves used to be able to transform whenever they wanted to via a magic salve or wolf pelt given to them by Satan.

The full moon thing was set in stone from the popular film 'The Wolfman'. *Don't quote me on that last line, I'm not 1oo% sure.*

But werewolf legends have been around since 12th or 14th (maybe 16th) century France and Germany.

According to lore, yes and I'm glad you realise this. But, according to popculture, (Blood and Chocolate, etc.) werewolves can change whenever they want.

A shifter can be anything it wants to be. However, most writers restrict it to one animal to keep things simple. Like Sam Merlotte from TrueBlood. He's turned into other animals before but his main form is a dog.

On that same note, shifters in Harris' universe have to change on the full moon.
