Never a more apt video now in 2011....the shame! Horses trust us to do for them since we hold them captive their entire lives; and .....this is what Congress brought back as a convenience for the over breeders and other industrys which exploit the horse. Human convenience. Throwaway replaceable forgettable creatures which serve us without motive or question.....betrayed trust. How can proslaughter sleep at night....
Ok there needs to be lobbying for veterinarians to have incentives to provide low cost euthanasia, thus preventing a lot of horses from going to slaughter. Stop the overbreeding too. You would not send your dog or cat to a slaughter facility, you euthanize when the time is right or let the animal die a peaceful natural death at home. Same responsibility as a horse owner!!!! Get over whining about slaughter, allow your precious horse to live & die at home, and/or get to lobbying!!
First u take an animal from his natural habitat where he was free,
then u use him, abuse him and then when he gets old or sick or non profitable, u say, slaughter him n end his suffering.
You are stupid, selfish n sick n you need to be slaughtered.
What gives u the right to peddle lifes of innocent animals n use them n kill them n eat them, u fukholicks. How'd u feel if ur child or ur old mother who was sick n needed rest n nourishment was slaughtered.
They can forage for themselves as they were doing before your stupid forefathers forcibly domesticated them and tied them unwillingly to the yoke of human stupidity.
They do not need our anything.
IF you want to be humane in anything, set them free.
Yeah horse slaughter is bad but it's not the only animal that isin't treated correctly and atleast it's going to feed someone. People kill some animals only for the fur. Fur is not even a need it's only a luxury.
Couldn't they just do the same thing for death rowe prisoners? which is give a large injection of sodium. what it does is interfere with nerve impulses and stops the heart from beating without any pain, exept the needle prick. which is probably like a mosquito bite.
Cows, beautiful animals. But all through our lives they have been food for us. Either through milk or meat.
Horses, God's gift; These animals have carried us through the ages, through wars, through travel, through hardship. We came into their world tore them from their herds. Though they re payed us with respect and trust. We re pay them with abuse and slaughter. Only the luck few get a true thanks for all their hard work over the years.
Ok.... Again.. What makes a horse different than say.. a cow..
So what you are saying is that because cows have always been meat, they should stay that way and because the forefathers of horses have trudged us through time, we owe them something? That crap is all in your head mate!! The horse in my neighbours paddock doesnt even realise he has an ancestry much less think about being repayed.. Where the fuck does this stuff come from?? Seriously..
If you haven't noticed Horses have been with us through thick and thin. Yes in many countries Cow's are the most respected animals. I don't think they should be slaughtered because I don't eat meat...
But maybe if you had lost a horse to slaughter like myself you would understand the pain of seeing others suffer the same faint!
That is all I have to say... If you don't like it I couldn't give a rats ass Just grow up ok?!
No no.. you didn't answer my question mate. Do you think the horse in the back paddock realises his ancestry. I think not. Therefore this obligatory projection of indebtedness is in your HEAD MATE!! I've lost many horses in my life of everything from accidents to predators, yet I've never felt I've owed any animal anything based on lineage. I care for my animals here and now and not in some soppy emotional fantasy for fuck sake.. You grow up.
@iluvfreddykruger Cattle have a longer history than horses, oxen (castrated cattle) ploughed the fields and pulled the wagons of war 1,000s of years before horses. Yet we still take calves away from their mothers after only 24 hours with them, then steal their milk and fatten them for slaughter. What goes around comes around, research shows that meat milk and dairy products lead to Leukaemia, Cancers, Diabetes & Heart Disease in humans. Though dead,it seems they certainly have the last laugh.
horse slaughter isent just killing horses - its crushing many dreams, killing the souls of nature that keept it going throughout the truffest times, its kills spirirt, souls, dreams, hopes. what is this world coming to? horse slaughter is NOT humane as they say it is. Its not just the old and sick who can not be treated who go to slaugher, its the champoins as well who made a mistake - so wat , we make mistakes and horse slaugher is one of our mistakes, one that got way out of hand
Have these people no fucking hearts? We should turn the tables and treat these people like the horses were treated. It disgusts me to see this. People like this serve this earth NO purpose what so ever and should drop dead.
how cud anybody do that to such a wonderful creature.........horses have helped humans through many tought times....and wut do they get in return.....they get killed.......how wud humans like it if THEY were sent to the slughter house.....im pretty sure they wud have second thoughts about it after they were sent.....
all the people who want horses to die should go to hell!!! i love horses and im willing to take any that people dont want. in my opinion, the people should let te horse rest. not torture horses slowly and painfully. man, they shouldnt even kill a horse in the first place. wat a cruel world.
The closing of american slaughter houses along with the crashing economy has created a real problem of too many horses and to few people willing to help. If these images truly upset you, DONATE your time or money to a reputable horse rescue, every dime or dollar will help as horses are truly expensive to care for properly. wanna be horse buyers out there, keep in mind you are making a 25 to 35 year commitment. Wanna be breeders, TAKE a close look at the horse population before you ADD to it!!!
I checked out your website, californiabarbaro, I didnt see anywhere in there anything telling people where they can go or what they can do in order to help with the problem of unwanted horses here in america. The slaughter houses are gone so now HOW do we help the 150,000 horses who would have ended up there every year.Yes we are working on preventing over breeding but the horses who are already here NEED help. Maybe you could add a section with links to reputable horse rescue's Thanks
IMHO, I'd rather see a horse go to slaughter and die a little faster than have someone slowly starve and neglect their horse because they can't sell/give it away and can't pay for its feed.Closing horse slaughter plants will not stop the slaughter of horses. It will force slaughter-buyers to ship these horses to Canada & Mexico, where the animals are treated even less humanely. There's enough unwanted horses already, we don't need to flood the market even more.
Do you understand that many of the die in transport? At auction yards? Do you get that they are packed onto trucks with no separation, mares, stallions and foals - horses get trampled. I fully understand the issues of transporting horses out of the country - but the bigger solution is to appeal to the breeders who keep over breeding horses - the AQHA would be the first on my list.
AQHA encourages educated ownership. But they cant stop idiots like horsefreak30 and brittany from buying them up, not understanding the maintenance required to promote good health, etc. Those idiots end up neglecting these horses, and that is how they end up in slaughter. It isnt your ranch horses in Texas breeding ranches that spend 30-150 thousand on average for breeding fees alone. Common sense my friend.
You do know that we dont slaughter in the US and Canada is going to follow our lead. Mexico will never stop. Animal abuse came in the form of these plant owners. Sick, lame, babies at their side, eyes out of sockets, open wounds left untreated. It is just as abusive as a backyard owner maybe worse. Captive bolt guns were not meant for a head shy flight animal. These idiots running them sometimes hit these animals 5 times or more just to bring them down.Backyard breeder or slaughter is all abuse.
I guess you have never been to an auction or seen a horse that was going to slaughter. If you have and you are justifying the methods of auctions and slaughter houses you are one of the breeders or are getting monetary gains from the horses suffering.Slaughter does not solve the greed of our human race nor does it justify the pain and suffering the horse goes through because of humans being driven by money.I have seen horses in the auctions with their eyes poked out, bones jutting and worse
I make a living alleviating the suffering of animals. I am a veterinarian. I am highly educated about these issues, and I believe horse slaughter is a god-sent method of euthanasia and animal rendering. There are many... cats, dogs, humans, and even other horses that benefit from horse slaughter. These are facts. Bring slaughter back to America, and we will greatly reduce the mistreatment and suffering of horses in America.
now why wouldn't you take action on chickens and cows raised for chicken strips and steaks? its no different than having smoked and salted horse meat on a sandwich.
It actually is when you consider we don't eat horsemeat in the United States, and US horses are not purposely bred for slaughter, they have a considerable amount of drugs and chemicals in their system from Bute to Steriods. And, I do take action where I can, I don't eat beef for example, and I have been actively involved in passing the Humane Farming Act in California. So yes, my money is where my mouth is.
Ya, you people that are anti-slaughter. You dont relise that you are doing more harm than good now that the slaughter plants in the u.s are closed. You have know clue!!! Horses are suffering now because of you people that dont think about things before you go an do them!
i dont seee how people can treat the horses like this! its wrong! and sick and twisted! i think that the people who do this to animals are no better than pedohiles or murderers and they deserve to be locked up and to have the key thrown away!
Yes...it is sad..i hate to watch it.,please dont get all ticked off at me for what i say, but my P.O.V is we do need it..id rather bedead than starving to death in sum pasture..or be let loose on my own...bein hit on the road..its done humanely..sorry to say..but i believe it is needed...
People don't realise how lucky they are to have horses. I would give my right arm just to have one for myself. I can't understand the concept of cruelity, its like people do not have a conscience or they do not feel guilt. Why slaughter? Why not rehome and let the animal have a decent life somewhere else. People should be left in the hot sun with no food and water for days on end and then tell me they feel nothing, no pain or suffering. I don't think one person would.....
There is a lot of things that we do to animals that I'd like to subject some people to - it would likely change their mind, or at least subject them to the same level of pain.
In most cases those horses came to those facilities looking like that. Blame the people who didnt care for them in the beginning. Better to end their suffering
than to let them completely starve and not end up on this misleading video!
Actually, many of the horses in this video were injured during transport and at the auctions. I do not try to mislead with my video's but present the facts.
I will agree that some are hurt in transportation. I have worked in cattle
auctions and can certainly attest to the fact that many animals get hurt in transport and
auctions. But I have to say that even though there is some animal abuse in these situations, I never saw an animal seriously hurt by humans at the facilitiy I was at. We took good care of animals and kept water and feed out for them. The transportation injuries mainly come from what other animals do to them on trailers.
I'm sorry, but there is just too much publicly available footage out there that shows differently for horses (and cattle, and chickens). How can you say this after the downer cow footage? I've seen enough footage of horses, cattle, pigs, chickens etc horribly abused by humans to make me completely change my eating and buying habits.
Yea your video really presents the facts; especially its name:"Killing Spirit". Nothing more factual than the slaughter of a fictional cartoon horse... Thats not misleading whatsoever...
The title has nothing to do with the movie "Spirit" - it has everything to do with killing the horse, which in my world is the archetype for spirit. Nice try though.
The worst thing about people like you is that you think that by getting slaughter banned actually helped horses. In reality you have caused more suffering than any slaughterhouse. Instead of being slaughtered horses now have to be shipped to Mex or Can where the process is less controlled and there are few standards. Not only that but the ban has caused market to crash so horses are forced to suffer on farms that cant afford to feed them. Thats why you see all of these pics of starving horses.
So, it's people like me who overbreed? It's people like me that send their horses to auction? Those of us who believe that horses have the capacity to heal and teach have wrecked the market? Wow, if I had that much power I'd ensure that no horse ever crossed our borders for slaughter, and that those who eat horse meat from the US knew that they were consuming steroids, bute and other lovely chemicals.
Yes, its people like you who "believe that horses have the capacity to heal and teach" that have ruined the market by getting slaughter banned. Now what is to be done with all of the poorly bred, poorly maintained, junk horses that nobody wants? How many more can you take care of? Everyone hates slaughter yet nobody can come up with a realistic method of dealing with the overpopulation problem or the greater issue, abuse.
And please, horse meat is no more dangerous than beef, lamb, chicken, or fish. All meat has it's dangers and equine's are no greater than any of the others. How about some mercury in your fish? Mad cow disease? Steroids in your beef? Hoof and mouth disease? The risks of all these is very low just like that of horse meat. Horse is actually much leaner and healthier than other red meats. So dont use that as if its some great risk, those "lovely chemicals" are in everything and pose little threat.
If you've read through my comments you'd see that I no longer eat beef - I couldn't after researching slaughter. I have an off the track thoroughbred - you know, the ones that get tossed into feedlots (where I got mine) and shipped to Canada for slaughter. I guarantee after watching his races he was loaded up on bute and steroids due to knee chips - and Europeans are ingesting fly spray chemicals, medications, etc. that don't leave the system prior to slaughter.
You talk like bute is poison or somthing. Its the horse equivalent to aspirin. It wouldnt hurt a human if they ate it straight out of the bottle let alone if they consumed a miniscule amount left over in an animal. And all animals use fly sprays, most much more potent than anything youd ever use on a horse, and nobody is getting sick from that. Horse meat is not any more dangerous to eat than the steaks youd buy at the grocery store; so this health argument youre trying to make just doesnt work.
Ok - I notice you mention nothing of steriods. Let me ask you this - there is also a serious overpopulation of dogs, and in some countries they skin them alive for meat - how do you feel about that? Is that a necessary evil in those countries?
Steroids were in a previous commment I made,I said that theyre used in cattle and pork all of the time with no ill effects. Your dog analogy has little to do with this topic. Dogs dont weigh 1700lbs and arent being bred and raised for profit and sport. Dogs in countries that you mention are essentially vermin. Even though its not applicable here, Ill address it. I have no problem with someone eating dog. What makes it evil? If its in your culture to eat dog (or horse) then who are we to judge?
I cant speak to the manner in which it is done, because that is somthing that is occuring on the other side of the planet. But who are we to be so ethnocentric that somthing must be wrong or "evil" as you say, simply because we dont agree with it? I wouldnt eat dog, (or horse for that matter) but who are we to tell another country or culture what they can do?
I'm sorry, but we, meaning the U.S. tell other countries what they can and can't do all the time via our "pre-emptive strikes". I side with the Humane Society on these issues - and I don't believe this is how animals should be treated, by us or anyone else.
Thats easy for you to say, living in middle class America. But if I am hungry in south east Asia and I have to choose between the personal rights of a DOG and me eating that night, the dog is going to lose out everytime. And last time I checked we didnt invade Iraq or any other country in history over their mistreatment of horses and dogs... We invade for real and genuine reasons like oil and money *sarcasm*. But thats an entirely different conversation altogether.
Well youve tried to totally change the subject and now i see youre done arguing... Probably a good idea for you to stop because you were sounding silly.
But enjoy the warm and fuzzy feelings you get from knowing that slaughter is banned. But try to remember the junk horses that people cant take care of and now after the ban cant sell so are forced to live out their poor and meager existence on some dirtbags "ranch".
First thank you for this video. It's so true horse slaughter has got to stop. There is no need to abuse torture or torment any animal. The government implements regulations and standards yet they don't stand by them. It's the people for the protection of animals that force them to. Never stop fighting for an animals right to live. Next time someone eats meat and it seems tough imagine what that animal went through before it got on your plate. Makes you think twice doesn't it?
This is really sad. They should stop Horse slaughter everywhere for horses have great powers and if they keep doing this horses will eventually dissapear from the earth we were driving by in a state on a way to my horse show and we saw pepole slitting horses throughts kicking foals, stabbing, pushing right in front of there house. We need to do somthing to stop horse slaughter everywhere
that is fucked up shit how could people do shit like that driver of that truck wreck hope your ass got hurt to and you fucking mexicans in most of the videos killing the horses go fuck yourself no good bastards
If they kill for food ... wouldn't they fatten them up .. make them healthy.. like they do with cows ??? but if thats how they do it then its just f**king wrong ! starving horses .. makes me sick !
ya know how those breast cancer comercials always say,"Because EVERYONE deserves a lifetime."? well, watching this video makes that statement false doesnt it. unless we TAKE ACTION AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!
I have an idea. All you tards screaming to stop slaughter. Start screaming to stop irresponsible horse breeding, but oh my god tackling the source of the problem would be all to practical wouldnt it?
You won't get any argument from me on that - or for most people who want to see slaughter stopped. Ultimately - the over breeding has to stop. And it's the most zealous horse breeders that end up having the most horses wind up at feedlots, AQHA, Paints and Thoroughbreds.
the ppl that do this to inoccent healthy horse should have the same thing done to them but let them be alive while they r gutted and skinned if u think that's not fair look at it this way was it fair what they did to those poor animals i vote to STOP HORSE SLAUGHTER!!!!! pread the word to stop this shit show this video to friends and get the world to know that this is happening and lats try to stop it .
o know but it is just not right the ppl should have the same thing done to them if u think it's unfair to do that don't u think it was unfair to do it to those poor animals that trusted us humans
In mexico... they kill with only a knife to sever the spinal cord... these people have no heart at all... i will never believe these slaughter workers are human... i have seen a video of how they kill horses in mexico... stabbing over and over until the horse goes down.. then the workers yell and rejoice in their accomplishments... sick! I will not travel or spend my vacation money in mexico as a result... oh... and don't get me started on the bull fighting... i hate that too!
You are all crying over spilled milk. The U.S. has outlawed the slaughter of horses last year and is currently working on a bill to outlaw the export of horses for slaughter.
No - the U.S. has not outlawed the slaughter of horses for human consumption - it has been done at a state level. Texas upheld a 1949 law banning the act, and Illinois passed a law (like California's) making it illegal. South Dakota is currently trying to get a horse slaughter plant up and running and it is still legal to send horses to Mexico and Canada to face a horrific death - which is why the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act NEEDS TO PASS.
Perhaps you should write for Horse Illustrated, then. Until then, I'm going off of what is published in real text. I agree that H.R. 503/S.311 needs to pass, and in a big way. It's what I've been saying all along. Support 503!
I wish it were true, that horse slaughter is banned in the US - but it is not, hence the South Dakota movement to open a slaughter plant. And if anyone wants to know, it's Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho that is blocking the vote of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.
Stop horse slaughter in the United States!! National call in day January 22. Go to the humane society webpage and see how to call in. If your serious that you hate this, you can make a difference by calling
I would like to know where u get ur information. In canada horses are slaughtered for human consumption, mostly overseas. actually ppl pay more for it than many other meats. They are slaughtered the same as cows, what goes for dogfood is very minimal and this goes for cows ect.
ppl just get more excited because they look at them as pets!!!
I just want to correct a very old myth, horses are not slaughtered for dog food, they are slaughtered for human consumption in Europe and Asia, specifically France, Belgium, Italy and Japan. And their meat does not go to the poor or those in need, it is sold as a delicacy for those who can pay for it. The Japanese purchase live foals from the U.S. and slaughter them there, so they can dine on horsemeat sashimi. It needs to end.
Im from australia, so i dont know alot about horse slaughter in the U.S, but here we actually do slaughter them for pet food, you can buy horse meat for your dog, and alot of racing greyhounds eat it. Im not for slaughter, just thought you may be interested.
Yeh, i try not to think of where my beef comes from, or my pork, but i cant be a vegitarian...all i know is that horse slaughter starts with the owners, and someone really needs to do something, i mean hell if i could i would buy all the sick horses nurse them back to health and sell them to the people i know who would take care of them.......its sad how tramatized they are. and keep in mind who you sell your horses to.
I'm sure your dog would woof down a steak, if only given a chance... If you want to eat fake, imitiation meat, cheese, butter, ice cream and milk, enjoy. I think having to eat synthetic vitamin pills b12 to supplement your diet because it does NOT EXIST in your menu choices highlights the fact that the diet is truly not sustainable.
Horse meat is not only eaten by wealthy people, there are lots of cheap horse hot dogs, cold cuts, sausages, and yes, expensive steaks. (However everyone needs to eat, regardless of how much or how little money they have) Recycling their flesh is a good use. Anyone can read for themselves, go to wikipedias entry for Horse meat.
Some companies offer rendering services which are supposed to "cook out" the drugs etc. because of the high temperatures used, but, I don't know that this is then used as animal food. Done better, there could be a way to benefit all, including the horse. Death is, after all just a transition from body to spirit. We hope that for all of us, when it comes, compassion is present.
Don't care whether they are horses/cows/pigs/chickens; they are all treated cruelly. You love horses and animals; stop eating bio-industry and looking at animals as a product. Take action on every animal protection campagne
Quite right, they are treated cruelly arafel. And yes, it's all about product to the industry and not compassion, as they try to pretend. They also do not want overbreeding to stop. If it does, there goes product.
arafel, I don't eat meat myself and so thinking about the full reality of who eats is also important. fforestydd mentioned zoo animals. Quite right, while in some zoos a meat packet containing chicken parts is fed to the meat eaters, that's not fed in all zoos, sanctuaries etc.. And whether chickens, pigs, cows, whatever are slaughtered, again all aspects need be considered. While some of us choose to not eat meat, those species really can't.
Danae; I agree, but also zoo-animals can have meat from animals that are put asleep normally. Just like I said; 'normal'cow/chicken/pig meat are full f chemicals so meat from animals that are put asleep should not be a problem. I'm also vegetarian, my friend eats biological. I'm owner of an animalshelter (45) and they stay here the rest of their life
u should do some research about feeding animals that are put to sleep to other animals. or forget the slaughter, you will kill your own animals that way. obviously they are pumped with enough drug to stop their heart. do u just think that that evaporates when the animal dies. DUH! its like when u poison an animal like say a gopher ande a hawk eats it, the hawk dies of poisoning...think about it.
No, your remark is a lame cop-out. I'm an individual entitled to their own opinion. Certainly there are better and more efficient ways to handle the slaughter of a horse. I for one do not eat commercially produced meat. If I purchase I buy only certified organic grass fed, or I raise the animals myself and butcher them onsite, because I do think that the adrenaline stress that is prolonged leading up to slaughter taints the meat quality. Are zoo animals affluent individuals?
If you are talking too me, what exactly do zoo animals have to do with the slaughter of horses? And yes, the corporate slaughter process would "taint" the meat. And if the remains were going to be used, that would be fine. Thing is how the death is handled. "Tainting" the meat is not the only thing at issue here. And if you are a person who really has respect for the species, you would have to consider all aspects of it's life and death.
Yes I was refering to your comment of me. Lots of zoo animals have eaten and are eating horse meat. My mothers prized Russian Wolf hounds were fed fresh chunks of horse meat daily. She has also owned and loved horses since she was a girl. I'm personally a reformed vegan, I remember how I was, thankfully I am in much better health now, though some of my freinds who remained die hards are in deplorable health.
For some meat eating has a benefit and for others, like me, it's a disaster. I have rheumatoid arthritis. It's an autoimmune problem that finds it's basis in an inability to digest certain types of proteins. Generally tied to leaky gut syndrome. Of the many proteins red meat is one of the worst. While the mainstream medical community refuses to address this, the only reason I am able to walk is because I made the dietary change.
I talked in general and not to someone speific :-) Sorry for my bad English. I'm not against eating meat, I'm against the way they are treated and tortured. And if someone takes an animal; take care of them the rest of their life
I understand you just fine arafel. We are in the same place heartwise and that makes us family. The thing is that if animals are put to sleep, that involves the use of barbiturates, which then is in the entire body system. That is not a benefit to anyone who eats it. Even if the euthanized are buried, over the long term, the barbiturates will end up in the ground water. We have to come at this in another equally respectful way.
If they are in good flesh, why waste it and render it useless with euthanasia? There is absolutely nothing dishonorable about being used for food. They are hungry people and animals out there, it is obnoxious for those who have plenty to condemn their being used as food. There are unwanted animals for many reasons, if they are in good flesh, put it to good use. We can't take care of all the people in the world, why would you make the horses welfare a priority over feeding them?
Ok...so, another slaughter industry rep. Hmmm...well...check the response at your Necessary Evil video. And this I'll add. If you don't bring reverence and compassion to the horse in this issue, it will never be resolved and you better look for another job.
Apology accepted. And yes, you're very entertaining. Training someone with this much hostility takes time, but, it's not without merit. (And the word here is a-p-p-a-r-e-n-t-l-y)
Educated huh? Well we'll just keep making you "speak", so that everyone can see just how "educated" you are. A perfect example of pro slaughter intelligence. Come on laddie, show everyone the level of intelligence here. Oh...and don't forget to "show" them the compassion.
Now your stuping to the leavle of insulting my intelegence??? nice real mature! Lasta lalaithamin! Amin feuya ten' lle!!!! Llie n'vanima ar' lle atara lanneina!!! Antolle ulua sulrim!
well I think its F#CKING Discusting they have the rite to live just as much as you and I and we have saved horses from the slaughter me and my mum but we cant save them all i wished we could but we have enuf horses as it is and id never send mine to the slaughter.....
Just keep watching. The world is beginning to change, slowly, but it is happening. We have 3 horses that we "took in" too. It's the people who feel this stuff( like you and me), speaking out in a format like this that are helping to change things. That what slaughter industries fear. So, keep talking.
oooo shakin in my boots danae... yeah im probibly more educated in reading and wrighting than the lot of you tree-huggin, liberals will ever be. It might be discusting but imagin what it would be like with out it.
I personaly would rather hit a 200 pound deer than a 1000 pound horse! because if there wernt slaughter houses there would be stray horses like there are cats and dogs! now that is what you should be worried about... not weather your pretty poney has been consumed by humans! and they are animals for gods sake!
Let's have a "conversation" about how big pharmaceutical and the AVA don't really want overbreeding to end. We can talk about commercial breeding and how all those seasonal dollars will go right down the toilet. Want to go there? LET'S DO IT!
Blame the owners not the slaughter houses. Now, stopping to slaughter houses still leaves the problem with irresponsible owners. The horses will be starved because they have no where to go and no one to care for them. What needs to be stopped is overbreeding and irresponsible owners, slaughter houses make the death of the horses easier and faster (than starving in a crowded paddock) owners make the death happen
You...LIE! I've seen plenty of horses in the killer pens at the sale that are in GOOD flesh and rideable. In fact, most of them. Irresponsible owners... you bet! Overbreeding...damn straight! Slaughter is not the answer. ENFORCED responsibility is. YOU ARE SLAUGHTER INDUSTRY PERSONNEL. Tired of this, huh? Well we're tired of you money grubbers desperately trying to salvage a dying industry. TOO LATE! FIND ANOTHER JOB!
Hey equestrienne777, let's make that conversation even bigger. Let's talk about foal crop figures in commercial breeding. Backyard breeders and irresponsibility? Hah!The tip of the iceberg. Just how responsible for their yearly foal crops ultimate lifetime can you prove that commercial breeders are? Who benefits from all of the over breeding and how many registered horses end up going for the kill?
Liberal? Ohhh...how typical. It seems that the cold blooded just keep showing that R-complex behavior. Look it up or are you able to read something all that complicated. Let's break it down, it's the portion of the brain that is responsible for aggression. Feel it? Hmmm...maybe not. That would take awareness.
Okay I am getting tired of hearing this....ending slaughter causes more problems and more horses dying. Sit and think about it logically for a moment and you'll understand. Most of the time horses are sent to the slaughter house starved, abused, or lame. They are horses that irresponsible owners no longer can keep and no one else wants the horse so they send it to slaughter.
There are a lot of us out there that are trying to stop this - we are up against a strong pro-slaughter lobby. Today was National Call In Day for the Horses - to tell our representatives and senators to PASS the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.
Imagine if these horses didnt get sent to slaughter... imgaine what life would ahve been like for them. I personaly have 2 horses and i would rather see them go to slaughter than starve at the hands of some neglegent Idiot. but those who see slaughter as inhumane and sick are those people who would rather see a horse starve in someones backyard then be saved from lingering death. Slaughter is a terrible thing ill agree but what would it belike with out it???
Please watch my other video, and watch how slaughter actually happens, and then tell me you would send your horses to this fate. The slaughter process puts horses in an unbelievable state of fear and terror. Do we want this to happen to our horses? Or would we be responsible owners and if we had no other option, humanely euthanize them? I suggest you watch both processes and make a decision, one is violent and horrifying, one is gentle and supportive, if that is your only option left.

yankees032778 10 months ago
Ok there needs to be lobbying for veterinarians to have incentives to provide low cost euthanasia, thus preventing a lot of horses from going to slaughter. Stop the overbreeding too. You would not send your dog or cat to a slaughter facility, you euthanize when the time is right or let the animal die a peaceful natural death at home. Same responsibility as a horse owner!!!! Get over whining about slaughter, allow your precious horse to live & die at home, and/or get to lobbying!!

then u use him, abuse him and then when he gets old or sick or non profitable, u say, slaughter him n end his suffering.
You are stupid, selfish n sick n you need to be slaughtered.
What gives u the right to peddle lifes of innocent animals n use them n kill them n eat them, u fukholicks. How'd u feel if ur child or ur old mother who was sick n needed rest n nourishment was slaughtered.

How are horses different than say... a cow?
texNoz 1 year ago
@texNoz Here are the differences;
Only the luck few get a true thanks for all their hard work over the years.
iluvfreddykruger 1 year ago
@iluvfreddykruger
Ok....
Seriously..
texNoz 1 year ago
@texNoz It is not crap....
If you don't like it I couldn't give a rats ass Just grow up ok?!
iluvfreddykruger 1 year ago
@iluvfreddykruger
No no.. you didn't answer my question mate. You grow up.
texNoz 1 year ago
@iluvfreddykruger Cattle have a longer history than horses, oxen (castrated cattle) ploughed the fields and pulled the wagons of war 1,000s of years before horses. Yet we still take calves away from their mothers after only 24 hours with them, then steal their milk and fatten them for slaughter. What goes around comes around, research shows that meat milk and dairy products lead to Leukaemia, Cancers, Diabetes & Heart Disease in humans. Though dead,it seems they certainly have the last laugh.

There's enough unwanted horses already, we don't need to flood the market even more.
unionjack9889 3 years ago 5
Do you understand that many of the die in transport? At auction yards? Do you get that they are packed onto trucks with no separation, mares, stallions and foals - horses get trampled. I fully understand the issues of transporting horses out of the country - but the bigger solution is to appeal to the breeders who keep over breeding horses - the AQHA would be the first on my list.
californiabarbaro 3 years ago
AQHA encourages educated ownership. But they cant stop idiots like horsefreak30 and brittany from buying them up, not understanding the maintenance required to promote good health, etc. Those idiots end up neglecting these horses, and that is how they end up in slaughter. It isnt your ranch horses in Texas breeding ranches that spend 30-150 thousand on average for breeding fees alone. Common sense my friend.
DoctorHunterr 2 years ago
You do know that we dont slaughter in the US and Canada is going to follow our lead. Mexico will never stop. Animal abuse came in the form of these plant owners. Sick, lame, babies at their side, eyes out of sockets, open wounds left untreated. It is just as abusive as a backyard owner maybe worse. Captive bolt guns were not meant for a head shy flight animal. These idiots running them sometimes hit these animals 5 times or more just to bring them down.Backyard breeder or slaughter is all abuse.
lcat1201 3 years ago
I guess you have never been to an auction or seen a horse that was going to slaughter. If you have and you are justifying the methods of auctions and slaughter houses you are one of the breeders or are getting monetary gains from the horses suffering.Slaughter does not solve the greed of our human race nor does it justify the pain and suffering the horse goes through because of humans being driven by money.I have seen horses in the auctions with their eyes poked out, bones jutting and worse
money2364 3 years ago
I make a living alleviating the suffering of animals. I am a veterinarian. I am highly educated about these issues, and I believe horse slaughter is a god-sent method of euthanasia and animal rendering. There are many... cats, dogs, humans, and even other horses that benefit from horse slaughter. These are facts. Bring slaughter back to America, and we will greatly reduce the mistreatment and suffering of horses in America.
DoctorHunterr 2 years ago
now why wouldn't you take action on chickens and cows raised for chicken strips and steaks? its no different than having smoked and salted horse meat on a sandwich.
ssn560II 3 years ago
It actually is when you consider we don't eat horsemeat in the United States, and US horses are not purposely bred for slaughter, they have a considerable amount of drugs and chemicals in their system from Bute to Steriods. And, I do take action where I can, I don't eat beef for example, and I have been actively involved in passing the Humane Farming Act in California. So yes, my money is where my mouth is.

I don't think one person would.....
loopyloulou85 3 years ago
There is a lot of things that we do to animals that I'd like to subject some people to - it would likely change their mind, or at least subject them to the same level of pain.
californiabarbaro 3 years ago

loopyloulou85 3 years ago

Wusawie1 3 years ago
In most cases those horses came to those facilities looking like that. Blame the people who didnt care for them in the beginning. Better to end their suffering
than to let them completely starve and not end up on this misleading video!
32WHV 3 years ago
Actually, many of the horses in this video were injured during transport and at the auctions. I do not try to mislead with my video's but present the facts.
californiabarbaro 3 years ago
I will agree that some are hurt in transportation. I have worked in cattle
auctions and can certainly attest to the fact that many animals get hurt in transport and
auctions. But I have to say that even though there is some animal abuse in these situations, I never saw an animal seriously hurt by humans at the facilitiy I was at. We took good care of animals and kept water and feed out for them. The transportation injuries mainly come from what other animals do to them on trailers.
32WHV 3 years ago
I'm sorry, but there is just too much publicly available footage out there that shows differently for horses (and cattle, and chickens). How can you say this after the downer cow footage? I've seen enough footage of horses, cattle, pigs, chickens etc horribly abused by humans to make me completely change my eating and buying habits.
californiabarbaro 3 years ago
Yea your video really presents the facts; especially its name:"Killing Spirit". Nothing more factual than the slaughter of a fictional cartoon horse... Thats not misleading whatsoever...
Twelvey 3 years ago
The title has nothing to do with the movie "Spirit" - it has everything to do with killing the horse, which in my world is the archetype for spirit. Nice try though.
californiabarbaro 3 years ago
The worst thing about people like you is that you think that by getting slaughter banned actually helped horses. In reality you have caused more suffering than any slaughterhouse. Instead of being slaughtered horses now have to be shipped to Mex or Can where the process is less controlled and there are few standards. Not only that but the ban has caused market to crash so horses are forced to suffer on farms that cant afford to feed them. Thats why you see all of these pics of starving horses.
Twelvey 3 years ago
So, it's people like me who overbreed? It's people like me that send their horses to auction? Those of us who believe that horses have the capacity to heal and teach have wrecked the market? Wow, if I had that much power I'd ensure that no horse ever crossed our borders for slaughter, and that those who eat horse meat from the US knew that they were consuming steroids, bute and other lovely chemicals.
californiabarbaro 3 years ago
Yes, its people like you who "believe that horses have the capacity to heal and teach" that have ruined the market by getting slaughter banned. Now what is to be done with all of the poorly bred, poorly maintained, junk horses that nobody wants? How many more can you take care of? Everyone hates slaughter yet nobody can come up with a realistic method of dealing with the overpopulation problem or the greater issue, abuse.
Twelvey 3 years ago
And please, horse meat is no more dangerous than beef, lamb, chicken, or fish. All meat has it's dangers and equine's are no greater than any of the others. How about some mercury in your fish? Mad cow disease? Steroids in your beef? Hoof and mouth disease? The risks of all these is very low just like that of horse meat. Horse is actually much leaner and healthier than other red meats. So dont use that as if its some great risk, those "lovely chemicals" are in everything and pose little threat.
Twelvey 3 years ago
If you've read through my comments you'd see that I no longer eat beef - I couldn't after researching slaughter. I have an off the track thoroughbred - you know, the ones that get tossed into feedlots (where I got mine) and shipped to Canada for slaughter. I guarantee after watching his races he was loaded up on bute and steroids due to knee chips - and Europeans are ingesting fly spray chemicals, medications, etc. that don't leave the system prior to slaughter.
californiabarbaro 3 years ago
You talk like bute is poison or somthing. Its the horse equivalent to aspirin. It wouldnt hurt a human if they ate it straight out of the bottle let alone if they consumed a miniscule amount left over in an animal. And all animals use fly sprays, most much more potent than anything youd ever use on a horse, and nobody is getting sick from that. Horse meat is not any more dangerous to eat than the steaks youd buy at the grocery store; so this health argument youre trying to make just doesnt work.
Twelvey 3 years ago
Ok - I notice you mention nothing of steriods. Let me ask you this - there is also a serious overpopulation of dogs, and in some countries they skin them alive for meat - how do you feel about that? Is that a necessary evil in those countries?
californiabarbaro 3 years ago
Steroids were in a previous commment I made,I said that theyre used in cattle and pork all of the time with no ill effects. Your dog analogy has little to do with this topic. Dogs dont weigh 1700lbs and arent being bred and raised for profit and sport. Dogs in countries that you mention are essentially vermin. Even though its not applicable here, Ill address it. I have no problem with someone eating dog. What makes it evil? If its in your culture to eat dog (or horse) then who are we to judge?
Twelvey 3 years ago
"If its in your culture to eat dog (or horse) then who are we to judge? "
thats because that culture lives beyond the middle ages.
ssn560II 3 years ago

rebelcowgirlxx 3 years ago 3
I cant speak to the manner in which it is done, because that is somthing that is occuring on the other side of the planet. But who are we to be so ethnocentric that somthing must be wrong or "evil" as you say, simply because we dont agree with it? I wouldnt eat dog, (or horse for that matter) but who are we to tell another country or culture what they can do?
Twelvey 3 years ago
I'm sorry, but we, meaning the U.S. tell other countries what they can and can't do all the time via our "pre-emptive strikes". I side with the Humane Society on these issues - and I don't believe this is how animals should be treated, by us or anyone else.
californiabarbaro 3 years ago
Thats easy for you to say, living in middle class America. But if I am hungry in south east Asia and I have to choose between the personal rights of a DOG and me eating that night, the dog is going to lose out everytime. And last time I checked we didnt invade Iraq or any other country in history over their mistreatment of horses and dogs... We invade for real and genuine reasons like oil and money *sarcasm*. But thats an entirely different conversation altogether.

First thank you for this video. It's so true horse slaughter has got to stop. There is no need to abuse torture or torment any animal. The government implements regulations and standards yet they don't stand by them. It's the people for the protection of animals that force them to. Never stop fighting for an animals right to live. Now we can concentrate our energy on doing something about those countries, now can't we?
Pro3110 4 years ago
No - the U.S. has not outlawed the slaughter of horses for human consumption - it has been done at a state level. Texas upheld a 1949 law banning the act, and Illinois passed a law (like California's) making it illegal. South Dakota is currently trying to get a horse slaughter plant up and running and it is still legal to send horses to Mexico and Canada to face a horrific death - which is why the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act NEEDS TO PASS.
californiabarbaro 4 years ago
Perhaps you should write for Horse Illustrated, then. Until then, I'm going off of what is published in real text. I agree that H.R. 503/S.311 needs to pass, and in a big way. It's what I've been saying all along. Support 503!
Pro3110 4 years ago
I wish it were true, that horse slaughter is banned in the US - but it is not, hence the South Dakota movement to open a slaughter plant. And if anyone wants to know, it's Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho that is blocking the vote of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

I don't eat beef, pork, etc. You research one form of slaughter, you research them all - and I couldn't do it anymore.
californiabarbaro 4 years ago
Yeh, i try not to think of where my beef comes from, or my pork, but i cant be a vegitarian...all i know is that horse slaughter starts with the owners, and someone really needs to do something, i mean hell if i could i would buy all the sick horses nurse them back to health and sell them to the people i know who would take care of them.......its sad how tramatized they are. and keep in mind who you sell your horses to.
barrelchaser67 4 years ago

We hope that for all of us, when it comes, compassion is present.
danae53 4 years ago
Don't care whether they are horses/cows/pigs/chickens; they are all treated cruelly. You love horses and animals; stop eating bio-industry and looking at animals as a product. Take action on every animal protection campagne
arafel1964 4 years ago 3
Quite right, they are treated cruelly arafel. And yes, it's all about product to the industry and not compassion, as they try to pretend. They also do not want overbreeding to stop. If it does, there goes product.
danae53 4 years ago
arafel, I don't eat meat myself and so thinking about the full reality of who eats is also important. fforestydd mentioned zoo animals. Quite right, while in some zoos a meat packet containing chicken parts is fed to the meat eaters, that's not fed in all zoos, sanctuaries etc.. And whether chickens, pigs, cows, whatever are slaughtered, again all aspects need be considered. While some of us choose to not eat meat, those species really can't.
danae53 4 years ago
Danae; I agree, but also zoo-animals can have meat from animals that are put asleep normally. Just like I said; 'normal'cow/chicken/pig meat are full f chemicals so meat from animals that are put asleep should not be a problem. I'm also vegetarian, my friend eats biological. I'm owner of an animalshelter (45) and they stay here the rest of their life
arafel1964 4 years ago
u should do some research about feeding animals that are put to sleep to other animals. or forget the slaughter, you will kill your own animals that way. obviously they are pumped with enough drug to stop their heart. do u just think that that evaporates when the animal dies. DUH! its like when u poison an animal like say a gopher ande a hawk eats it, the hawk dies of poisoning...think about it.

Are zoo animals affluent individuals?
fforestydd 4 years ago
If you are talking too me, what exactly do zoo animals have to do with the slaughter of horses? And yes, the corporate slaughter process would "taint" the meat. And if the remains were going to be used, that would be fine. Thing is how the death is handled. "Tainting" the meat is not the only thing at issue here. And if you are a person who really has respect for the species, you would have to consider all aspects of it's life and death.
danae53 4 years ago
Yes I was refering to your comment of me. Lots of zoo animals have eaten and are eating horse meat. My mothers prized Russian Wolf hounds were fed fresh chunks of horse meat daily. She has also owned and loved horses since she was a girl. I'm personally a reformed vegan, I remember how I was, thankfully I am in much better health now, though some of my freinds who remained die hards are in deplorable health.
fforestydd 4 years ago
For some meat eating has a benefit and for others, like me, it's a disaster. I have rheumatoid arthritis. It's an autoimmune problem that finds it's basis in an inability to digest certain types of proteins. Generally tied to leaky gut syndrome. Of the many proteins red meat is one of the worst. While the mainstream medical community refuses to address this, the only reason I am able to walk is because I made the dietary change.
danae53 4 years ago
I talked in general and not to someone speific :-) Sorry for my bad English. I'm not against eating meat, I'm against the way they are treated and tortured. And if someone takes an animal; take care of them the rest of their life
arafel1964 4 years ago
I understand you just fine arafel. We are in the same place heartwise and that makes us family. The thing is that if animals are put to sleep, that involves the use of barbiturates, which then is in the entire body system. That is not a benefit to anyone who eats it. Even if the euthanized are buried, over the long term, the barbiturates will end up in the ground water. We have to come at this in another equally respectful way.
danae53 4 years ago
If they are in good flesh, why waste it and render it useless with euthanasia? There is absolutely nothing dishonorable about being used for food. They are hungry people and animals out there, it is obnoxious for those who have plenty to condemn their being used as food. There are unwanted animals for many reasons, if they are in good flesh, put it to good use. We can't take care of all the people in the world, why would you make the horses welfare a priority over feeding them?
fforestydd 4 years ago
Ok...so, another slaughter industry rep. Hmmm...well...check the response at your Necessary Evil video. And this I'll add. If you don't bring reverence and compassion to the horse in this issue, it will never be resolved and you better look for another job.
danae53 4 years ago
Apology accepted. And yes, you're very entertaining. Training someone with this much hostility takes time, but, it's not without merit. (And the word here is a-p-p-a-r-e-n-t-l-y)
danae53 4 years ago
Educated huh? Well we'll just keep making you "speak", so that everyone can see just how "educated" you are. A perfect example of pro slaughter intelligence. Come on laddie, show everyone the level of intelligence here. Oh...and don't forget to "show" them the compassion.

well I think its F#CKING Discusting they have the rite to live just as much as you and I and we have saved horses from the slaughter me and my mum but we cant save them all i wished we could but we have enuf horses as it is and id never send mine to the slaughter.....
C4mTheL4mb 4 years ago
Just keep watching. The world is beginning to change, slowly, but it is happening. We have 3 horses that we "took in" too. It's the people who feel this stuff( like you and me), speaking out in a format like this that are helping to change things. That what slaughter industries fear. So, keep talking.
danae53 4 years ago
oooo shakin in my boots danae... yeah im probibly more educated in reading and wrighting than the lot of you tree-huggin, liberals will ever be. It might be discusting but imagin what it would be like with out it.
AliujFish 4 years ago
I personaly would rather hit a 200 pound deer than a 1000 pound horse! because if there wernt slaughter houses there would be stray horses like there are cats and dogs! now that is what you should be worried about... not weather your pretty poney has been consumed by humans! and they are animals for gods sake!
AliujFish 4 years ago
Let's have a "conversation" about how big pharmaceutical and the AVA don't really want overbreeding to end. We can talk about commercial breeding and how all those seasonal dollars will go right down the toilet. Want to go there? LET'S DO IT!
danae53 4 years ago
Blame the owners not the slaughter houses. Now, stopping to slaughter houses still leaves the problem with irresponsible owners. The horses will be starved because they have no where to go and no one to care for them. What needs to be stopped is overbreeding and irresponsible owners, slaughter houses make the death of the horses easier and faster (than starving in a crowded paddock) owners make the death happen
equestrianqt777 4 years ago
TOO LATE! FIND ANOTHER JOB!
danae53 4 years ago
Hey equestrienne777, let's make that conversation even bigger. Let's talk about foal crop figures in commercial breeding. Backyard breeders and irresponsibility? Hah!The tip of the iceberg. Just how responsible for their yearly foal crops ultimate lifetime can you prove that commercial breeders are? Who benefits from all of the over breeding and how many registered horses end up going for the kill?

im not hiding danae53 i , unlike you apprently, have a life other than sitting on my ass at a comp and being a liberal airhead.
AliujFish 4 years ago
Liberal? Ohhh...how typical. It seems that the cold blooded just keep showing that R-complex behavior. Look it up or are you able to read something all that complicated. Let's break it down, it's the portion of the brain that is responsible for aggression. Feel it? Hmmm...maybe not. That would take awareness.
danae53 4 years ago

AliujFish 4 years ago
Please watch my other video, and watch how slaughter actually happens, and then tell me you would send your horses to this fate. The slaughter process puts horses in an unbelievable state of fear and terror. Do we want this to happen to our horses? Or would we be responsible owners and if we had no other option, humanely euthanize them? I suggest you watch both processes and make a decision, one is violent and horrifying, one is gentle and supportive, if that is your only option left.
californiabarbaro 4 years ago
Well humanely euthanizing is great and all but there arnt enough people in the worl how would pay for it. when they can be payed to have them shipped off to slaughter. as i said i would rather send my horses off to slaughter than ahve them starve! there was a horse where i bought my mare, he died of starvation! i dont want to see that id would have much rather seen that idiot send tha
