exactly, and ever since I discovered MAstercard Gift Cards, I've been buying alot more. But I STILL download first. Demo's always suck so bad it makes a good game seem terrible. i wouldn't steal anything. I would download a movie. its not stealing, its just getting a copy that uses absolutly no resources to make except electricity sorta. most people who download movies wouldnt even buy them. so its not losing them money
Very true. I'm an avid preacher of "if you like it, buy it!" but usually I don't... Not wasting money on crap keeps my faith in a company. If I download a game and it sucks, I'll still see if I should buy the next one, instead of saying "OMFG THIS SUX OMFG DEY ST0LE MAH MONIES!!!"
Like many people commented before me, I think downloading music for free doesn't make the artist lose money, but rather gain money from the availability of their music. More money comes from tickets of tours and concerts than album releases.. And if it a good, listenable band then they will be successful, more so if their music is more available to a larger amount of people.
This argument isn't Listeners Vs. Artists, it's Listeners Vs. Record companies..

What most of you fail to realize is that eventually this will take the incentive away from great artists to produce and revolutionize the music/movie etc industry.
You say that real artists are NOT in it for the money, I agree. BUT a lot of the music most of us like is from people who do it for the money, I seriously doubt Timbaland, Madonna, JT, 50 cent, Eminem etc would bother doing this if it wasnt for the dough

Oh Christ..I knew someone would be ignorant enough to comment on the artists I picked as examples. I picked them because they're popular right now, not because I like them. And just because you don't, the majority of people does. Going clubbing, for example, simply wouldn't have been the same without the generic pop-trash we've got.

I don't need my fan's money to pay for my band, any teenager can keep a band up and running so people should stop giving us that "Support the band" crap.
It only takes a tiny bit of your salaries from your JOB to keep a band alive.
It could be incredibly easy to pay the artists for their work. An "artist support page", a homepage on which you select which artist you would like to donate money to, and then select the amount of money you would like to pay. It's simple, but it hasn't been done yet. Only on Jamendo.

Do you honestly think that would work? Sure a couple of nice persons would donate but certainly not enough for most artists to make a living.
You can already see stuff like this happening on the net, people run websites that helps out its users in various ways, offering people to donate if they want to. The result is usually that 80% of the costs of the website has to be paid out of the owners pocket.
Most people are way too greedy & selfish to make that idea work.
As it stands, record sales are already a spectacularly poor way for artists to make money, so this argument doesn't carry much weight. The average commercial lifespan of a successful band (far less an unsuccessful one) is two albums and only a tiny percentage of those albums provide anything like a normal salary for the musicians themselves. We need to stop pretending that this is about artists, it's about a dying industry's need for protectionist legislation.
Wouldnt you just love it if your pay was based on donation.
Im fully aware its their job choice - but if everyone had normal jobs, how boring would the world be. No music, no sports, no form of entertainment whatsoever except for on the community level. Its all about your preferences though but I prefer a flourishing international entertainment industry
I just re-read my comment and it doesn't make clear sense. People have been making music as a hobby for hundreds of years, why should they get paid so much for their hobby? The answer is they shouldn't. The same with footballers ect.
I dunno, if communist leaders weren't so corrupt, the system would be great. Everybody having normal jobs seems fine to me. Life isn't all about excitement.
Dont get me wrong. People like Hillary duff and who have you get paid too much in my opinion. But much of the good music we have today would probably not have existed if kids grew up knowing artists dont earn shit.
I love music :) I download all my music. Unless I think the artist is amazing, then I buy it.
Some of the best artists and singers that I have heard, don't get paid alot. In fact, their goal isn't to get paid for it, but to use it as a hobby while they still work a normal job ect... It's something these artists enjoy doing, and don't mind sharing with the world. Take NIN, Matt Parker, and Trey Stone, ect... They ENCOURAGE people to download their creations, and if they make money off of it, cool!
well you still gotta eat you know. its hard to get a contract and its even harder and more expensive to give out your own CD
Im just saying if there's no real incentive for artists to give up their normal lives, get headhunted by media 24/7, spend their lives travelling the world without having much time for family and close friends....if you dont get a LOT of money for doing that stuff then why'd you do it? I dunno its just my opinion - dont fret
but everyone had office jobs then we wouldnt have much music to listen to :P the entertainment business - video games, music, movies etc. would go downhill.
They should still make music and they will still make money off cd's and and physical goods but when you can download it that should be free, the artists who complain about copyright aren't even poor, they are better off than the average person. That's just being greedy
hm I've bought less than three CDs the past 5 years so I doubt theyre making money off of me. Must be everybody else that they'll be making money off of then
I really wish I would have downloaded the atrocious horror film with anti-piracy overtones, "Untraceable" before giving away $18 of my hard earned cash for that piece of filth.
The truth is that piracy does not hurt movie nor artist profits.
If you copy a car, a handbag, a tv and you give that copy to some one else.. who copies that and.. so on.. that is charity, humanity and good will, how can any one think that is a crime?
The industry might fall (though propbly not) but the ART, the ART will allways survive.
The copyright act is a crime against the freedom of expression. Copying is expressing your freedom.
Real artists dont do it for the money. - But if you legalise file sharing then more people can find, enjoy and listen to new music, and later on buy the real plastic CD's and go to the concerts - and buy the merch! - Why go to an IRL discshop and listen to music there when you can do it at home?
And another thing, would you pay for looking at building exteriors in your city/an unknown artists paintings?...
...Prob not, but if you see a building/painting that you really like and find out the name of the great architect/artist that designed/painted it, maybe you would even pay to see more of his art-work and visit his gallery...?
Without seeing the free buildings/Paintings you wouldnt even discovere him...
...File sharing is fantastic to make the market a little more fair. - The good and real hard-workinga rtists will get paid if ppl like their work. If ppl dont, then they wont get paid... Its a market economy.
How can you steal creativity? It's the biz that is leeching off of the creativity but they had the genial idea to push laws to protect them (money talks) and by monopoly push for imaginary amounts of costs on material that is infact comercial in nature. It's the second greatest scam in the world today, the first being banks.
copyright is *supposed* to protect artists from others passing the work off as their own. this is not what file-sharing is about; it's about making the media available to people who might otherwise not be able to get it. the riaa and the mpaa make obscene profits, and the "artists" in question get a pittance. now that consumers are by-passing the "meddle"men, they're all freaking out.
Many artists today sing trash. Anybody can sing and singing has been on this planet for several thousands of years. People used to sing and still do today without gaining money.
Ha, if any random person walked onto the street today and started singing at least one or two people would like even if it were dreadful. Then they'd start buying and illegally downloading as other can't afford it.
What do you do when you share anything with someone? You're communicating, you're sharing culture.
It's not really about expressing freedom as it is about expressing culture. Copyright is the imprisoning of culture, you can only share it if you pay the price.
Muy bueno!!! Nunca mas volvere a pagar 60 euros por un juego de la playstation2 y menos con el canon digital! si,hombre, nos vamos a ir todos con la puta al rio pero por culpa de los precios altos...
As always, people who are currently in power don't want things to change, because they would loose a position they've struggled and invested alot of money to gain. Who didn't want the feodal system to be abolished in Europe? Well, the nobles, of course. Same power structures, different applications, and as before, it's time the people take matters in their own hands, realizing the men in power only adhere the people's interests when it suits their own interests.
The video isn't trying to promote terrorism. I'm actually amazed at how you guys are reacting to that one piece of clothing. In sweden where I live people wear them, especially students, because it's TRENDY. Yes. Believe it, it's trendy in sweden to wear that clothing. It's "in" right now. That's why the guy in the video is wearing it - that's a typical male student.
Why does he insist on wearing a kafiya while he makes an important point about copyright legislature? It trivialises the handbag-holding character as a generic radical and dilutes the message.
I guess some people will do just about anything - including sell themselves, their ideals and values (if they in fact have any to begin with) and more importantly the freedoms they and others enjoy for nothing more than being considered trendy and fashionable. Too bad I and most most other sane folks still consider such people to be nothing more than useful idiots.
Well they are useful for the jihadists they so love to pander to. You know, those same people who would gladly hang or stone them once they transform from being "useful" idiots back to the regular variety.
You make no sense... What are you replying too? I didn't comment on how nice he was or whether or not generic radicals are known for returning old ladies' bags. I said that he trivializes his message by invoking the generic radical character. I don't trust people who are happy to oppose anything so long as it seems to be the more radical option of two. I do however agree with the message conveyed by this video. Lausse, you're an idiot.
Well samelieblich, you really put a standard here ... Im not calling you an idiot just because you dont agree with me. For me this only ad one more perspective, cause it smaches prejudices about rads beeing bad. And I think thats what you are being provoked by. And I think most people dont agree with you, so ...
Lausse, I am not calling you an idiot because you don't agree with me, I am calling you an idiot because you are not smart. Your opinions are your own, but your intelligence is subject to objective measurement.
Samlieblich, you wanna marry me? Kafiya as bridal veil, promise. Opposites attract...
As said, trendy and not very controversial. If you really are that smart you would know that palestinians are semits too, so to be pro Palestine in the conflict does in no way mean that you're an antisemit. But to use the word "antisemitism" as soon as the conflict between Israel and Palestine is brough up to discussion is an easy way to put an end to the debate without even having to discuss the issue at all.
lausse... what on earth are you talking about? First of all samlieblich never made any mention of antisemitism! Secondly, you actually did, which I assume the same logic would then apply to you as well and you have therefore stifled this discussion. And if you are sooo pro Palestinian why don't you move in with them? Lets see how they treat you when you decide a week from now that the kafiyah is no longer that trendy. PS. lay off the crack pipe buddy!
No, this is produced by Carl Schlyter, member of the European Parliament from the Swedish Greens. Swedish company RåFilm made it. It's all in the aftertext.
its a parody of an international ad made by the filmindustry, yes. But the folks that made it are from Lund, Sweden and the little organisation called RåFilm. And as said here above, Schlyter was the man behind it, even though RåFilm really added a lot of their thoughts. And the music is made by Ivan stojnic and his firends. Unsigned! Great result I think. Really!
In Germany it's illegal now. Before UPloading was illegal, now DOWNloading is illegal, too. Then Germany has a new right for the police and some other things:
- All German mail services MUST log all data for 6 months
- The police is allowed to hack your computer if the think you are an terrorist (YES if they THINK the needn't any proof)...
I pay for all my downloads, but I feel totally free to burn mix CD's for my friends. I grew up in the era of audio cassettes. I made mix tapes for my girlfriends and buddies all the time. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. It costs the industry NOTHING, and probably increases their sales if my friends like the music and get turned on to an artist.
why should the rich get richer? i say spread the wealth. honestly, think of the billions bill gates has and how much he will leave over to his kids. its just ridiculous that some people have billions while others are thrown into this world with little more than the quarters they beg for each God-given day. I wont steal cars or tv's, but i will share my personal stuff with fellow internet surfers.
Yeah, you're a little ridiculos. I don't think you truly thought about your response. I'm guessing you just wrote what first came to your mind. Think about it do some research, then write.
It is still theft, even if you are stealing from a rich person. The point is that giving music to your friends is NOT stealing. But when you download, you should pay for it.
The video itself isn;t that good; it doesn't list any of the reasons why the filmindustry is out of line other than forcing their 'promo' at the start of every DVD (does that have copright son it too? Cause it never gets copied :-P )

So the message in this video is the correct one, no doubt about that; but why is the guy wearing a kafiyah? Is he a terrorist sympathizer or is he trying to point out that in addition to sharing files its also ok to "steal" a "cultural symbol" thats tied to religious oppression, misogynie and complete hatred of anything un-Islamic to seem cool, hip or trendy?
In sweden we don't connect those to terrorist sympathizers. It's actually fashionable to wear them in sweden - they're cheap and you look god in them. Almost every god damn university student is wearing them.
With these sort of ads, the industry doesn't have to do anything to label us. It looks to me like the file sharers (at least those responsible for making this video) are doing a fine job of that themselves. This is certainly not the kind of community I would ever want to belong to and its no the sort of image I would want the public to have of the p2p community!

Dont get me wrong. People like Hillary duff and who have you get paid too much in my opinion. But much of the good music we have today would probably not have existed if kids grew up knowing artists dont earn shit.
I love music :) I download all my music. Unless I think the artist is amazing, then I buy it.
ramaskrik 2 years ago 2
Some of the best artists and singers that I have heard, don't get paid alot. In fact, their goal isn't to get paid for it, but to use it as a hobby while they still work a normal job ect... It's something these artists enjoy doing, and don't mind sharing with the world. Take NIN, Matt Parker, and Trey Stone, ect... They ENCOURAGE people to download their creations, and if they make money off of it, cool!
Uuxaul 2 years ago
well you still gotta eat you know. its hard to get a contract and its even harder and more expensive to give out your own CD
Im just saying if there's no real incentive for artists to give up their normal lives, get headhunted by media 24/7, spend their lives travelling the world without having much time for family and close friends....if you dont get a LOT of money for doing that stuff then why'd you do it? I dunno its just my opinion - dont fret
ramaskrik 2 years ago
but everyone had office jobs then we wouldnt have much music to listen to :P the entertainment business - video games, music, movies etc. would go downhill.
ramaskrik 2 years ago
They should still make music and they will still make money off cd's and and physical goods but when you can download it that should be free, the artists who complain about copyright aren't even poor, they are better off than the average person. That's just being greedy
hehehaw 2 years ago
hm I've bought less than three CDs the past 5 years so I doubt theyre making money off of me.

In fact it promotes those lesser known.
Dimmthewitted 4 years ago 4
I'm not sure it actually promotes the lesser known. There's a band from Italy that's been playing unique Power Metal for the last 20 years.
I've spent the last 8 months trying to download a single song, and only just 2 days ago have I heard a 30 second preview.
RedlineM203 4 years ago
with Myspace Music and Youtube uploads it is very easy for aspiring bands to get their music out.
I always seed and share upandcoming and local music.
Those bands that have somehow managed web anonymity are either webphobic or are unknown by sharers.
It's up to bands to self promote.
Check out Mars Volta for a "homogeneous amalgamation of turgidy."

So its ok to breach copyright then?! I didn't understand.
SmiertSpionem 4 years ago
Well the criminal act is the copyright one.
Are you free?

Copyright protects artist from people leaching off their creativity (without their permission), and profiting from their hard work.
SmiertSpionem 4 years ago
Real artists dont do it for the money. - But if you legalise file sharing then more people can find, enjoy and listen to new music, and later on buy the real plastic CD's and go to the concerts - and buy the merch! - Why go to an IRL discshop and listen to music there when you can do it at home?
And another thing, would you pay for looking at building exteriors in your city/an unknown artists paintings?...
ChaoticSense 4 years ago 4
...Prob not, but if you see a building/painting that you really like and find out the name of the great architect/artist that designed/painted it, maybe you would even pay to see more of his art-work and visit his gallery...?
Without seeing the free buildings/Paintings you wouldnt even discovere him...
ChaoticSense 4 years ago
...File sharing is fantastic to make the market a little more fair. - The good and real hard-workinga rtists will get paid if ppl like their work. If ppl dont, then they wont get paid... Its a market economy.
ChaoticSense 4 years ago
How can you steal creativity? It's the biz that is leeching off of the creativity but they had the genial idea to push laws to protect them (money talks) and by monopoly push for imaginary amounts of costs on material that is infact comercial in nature. It's the second greatest scam in the world today, the first being banks.
F4R207 4 years ago
copyright is *supposed* to protect artists from others passing the work off as their own. this is not what file-sharing is about; it's about making the media available to people who might otherwise not be able to get it. the riaa and the mpaa make obscene profits, and the "artists" in question get a pittance. now that consumers are by-passing the "meddle"men, they're all freaking out.
Romperjet 4 years ago 4
Hard work?
Many artists today sing trash. Anybody can sing and singing has been on this planet for several thousands of years. People used to sing and still do today without gaining money.
Ha, if any random person walked onto the street today and started singing at least one or two people would like even if it were dreadful. Then they'd start buying and illegally downloading as other can't afford it.
I love this video, faved it :)
PIRACY FTW!
vanessawang702 3 years ago 7
What do you do when you share anything with someone? You're communicating, you're sharing culture.
It's not really about expressing freedom as it is about expressing culture. Copyright is the imprisoning of culture, you can only share it if you pay the price.

I guess some people will do just about anything - including sell themselves, their ideals and values (if they in fact have any to begin with) and more importantly the freedoms they and others enjoy for nothing more than being considered trendy and fashionable. Too bad I and most most other sane folks still consider such people to be nothing more than useful idiots.
travishv 4 years ago
How are these idiots useful travishv?
samlieblich 4 years ago
Well they are useful for the jihadists they so love to pander to. You know, those same people who would gladly hang or stone them once they transform from being "useful" idiots back to the regular variety.

You make no sense... What are you replying too? I didn't comment on how nice he was or whether or not generic radicals are known for returning old ladies' bags. I said that he trivializes his message by invoking the generic radical character. I don't trust people who are happy to oppose anything so long as it seems to be the more radical option of two. I do however agree with the message conveyed by this video. Lausse, you're an idiot.
samlieblich 4 years ago
Well samelieblich, you really put a standard here ... Im not calling you an idiot just because you dont agree with me. For me this only ad one more perspective, cause it smaches prejudices about rads beeing bad. And I think thats what you are being provoked by. And I think most people dont agree with you, so ...
lausse 4 years ago
Lausse, I am not calling you an idiot because you don't agree with me, I am calling you an idiot because you are not smart. Your opinions are your own, but your intelligence is subject to objective measurement.
samlieblich 4 years ago
Samlieblich, you wanna marry me? Kafiya as bridal veil, promise. Opposites attract...
As said, trendy and not very controversial. If you really are that smart you would know that palestinians are semits too, so to be pro Palestine in the conflict does in no way mean that you're an antisemit. But to use the word "antisemitism" as soon as the conflict between Israel and Palestine is brough up to discussion is an easy way to put an end to the debate without even having to discuss the issue at all.
lausse 4 years ago
lausse... what on earth are you talking about? First of all samlieblich never made any mention of antisemitism! Secondly, you actually did, which I assume the same logic would then apply to you as well and you have therefore stifled this discussion. And if you are sooo pro Palestinian why don't you move in with them? Lets see how they treat you when you decide a week from now that the kafiyah is no longer that trendy. PS. lay off the crack pipe buddy!

No, this is produced by Carl Schlyter, member of the European Parliament from the Swedish Greens. Swedish company RåFilm made it. It's all in the aftertext.
miljopartiet 4 years ago 9
its a parody of an international ad made by the filmindustry, yes.

Germany sucks :(

I pay for all my downloads, but I feel totally free to burn mix CD's for my friends. I grew up in the era of audio cassettes. I made mix tapes for my girlfriends and buddies all the time. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. It costs the industry NOTHING, and probably increases their sales if my friends like the music and get turned on to an artist.

Is he a terrorist sympathizer or is he trying to point out that in addition to sharing files its also ok to "steal" a "cultural symbol" thats tied to religious oppression, misogynie and complete hatred of anything un-Islamic to seem cool, hip or trendy?
