  • Thank you Sully!!

  • Sully

were did u find that color purple dye, thats just what I need, a deep purple like the stain you put on that body, I want deep purple, but still want the grain to show, please tell me what you used dor blk dye, and purple.

    Thank you Brother..

  • @diaztec1 This came from LMI, but you can also get it from stewmac, woodcraft, all kindsa places.

  • @JTRiffs I would expect not to find the same shade. I think that Duplicolor makes some in a limited array of colors. Google's gonna need to help ya from there. :)

  • @JTRiffs I really don't remember what the cost of it was (this video is over 2 years old), but auto stores would be the place to look. It's not expensive. However, if you get a spray can of it, your color choices are limited. None of this is cheap, really; especially when you factor in the time that you've spent on it.

  • where can I get grain filler and dye?

    wood shop?

    homedepot?

  • @evilguitar9430 check out LMII dot com. They've got all ya need and a whole lot more!

  • @TheFallenDidntTry No sanding after I did the "sand back" phase. This was cleared with Acrylic Lacquer, shot form a gun.

  • @jsullysix What is your view on using tinted nitrocellulose laquer for spraying over a flamed maple top? Im making my own explorer and was considering not using any stain or dye, would that work? or do you know of anything better? Cheers alot man :)

  • @willcobbsail It's a common practice, works just fine. :)

  • @jsullysix thanks for the help ..would you recommend water based or solvent based dye? thanks again

  • @AnDr3vV7 If you're dying the wood directly (like in the video), water. If you're shooting it over a sealed body, then solvent. Just my preference.

  • @jsullysix im looking to do a transparent black finish on a flamed maple top...what paint or dye for that matter should i use ? thanks!!

  • @AnDr3vV7 black dye.

  • candy coat? Or did i hear it wrong?

  • @Shredderistic6 you heard correctly, but I didn't like the candy color, so I sanded it all back and dyed it.

  • @jsullysix thanks

  • Love the grain

    Love the Vid

    Love the HAIR!

    ROCK ON!

  • Does anyone know wether Acrylic dyes can be spray painted with clear nitrocellulose lacquer or will it react?

  • @blackstars26 Acrylic dye? Where did you get it? Dunno that I've heard of it, but I don't do a lot of dye research. ;)

  • youtube wnot let me link the website but its Liberon Concentrated Wood dye "Acrylic formula"

They have an ebay store the stuff is pritty cheap and is my only option i am aware of because i cant use reranch (I live in the UK)

  • HI, I will be doing a transparent purple with highlighted black underneath dye job on a kit guitar with a flame maple top it has a coat of sand sealer on it do I have to sand off the sealer coat before I do the black ? I'm newbie to guitar finishing although I have been playing 20yrs. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks Bill

  • Hey could you do a video or a serise of videos on how to route temalo cavitys? like for a floyde rose? thanks

  • @ht448 Next body I build with a floyd on it, I'll be sure to talk about it. If you get the stewmac floyd templates, the instructions are right in there. :)

  • awesome guitar and video, where would I buy the dye if I wanted a blood red finish in the middle of my guitar. Also any tips on getting the grain to come out as much on a piece of wood.

sanded down this strat clone for a friend and wanted to do something special and the wood seems it would look amazing like that.

  • @JYZProductions if you have a Woodcraft store near you, you can get the analine dyes there. If not, you can get it from Stewart MacDonald or LMI. I'd post links to the products, but youtube won't let you do that in comments. Best thing to do to get the color to pop is to dye it darker than the intended result, then sand it back, and dye it with the lighter color you plan to use.

  • @jsullysix alright thanks especially for the tip about dyes, this warlock I want it to look like a john petrucci guitar just got to figure out the easiest way to do a flame top and I think for the dyes I'm just gonna go on ebay because the only thing close to a wood craft store I can think of near me is a canadian tire haha.

How hard is it to replace a fret in your experience? I need to replace a few on two older guitars.

  • @JYZProductions refrets aren't difficult, but they take practice. I have a video called "partial refret" that may help you out.

  • @g3speed14 Thanks for the kind words. Dunno if I'm the coolest dad; you'd have to ask my son. ;)

  • Now that's AWESOME stuff. You really know your s... stuff!

When you said candy coat, did you mean that candy that you paint over gold or silver base on cars?

  • @LittleMikey7 the one and the same! Many manufacturers use tinted clear for trans finishes. It's the same stuff.

  • what's the difference between a flame top and an arch top?

  • @tsanchez5150 An arched top is a construction style; think of a jazz guitar, or an E-335. The top isn't flat; there's an arch to it, whereas a flame top refers to using flamed maple as a top.

  • Dude, I would have kept the first reddish color. But it's what you wanted.

  • @guitarkid413 yeah, i hated it; it was nowhere near as nice as what was there originally. It's been cleared and will be buffed and reassembled this weekend. Whee!

  • What kind of dye did you use to stain the wood?

    Thanks for the tips man!

  • @SingerOfPaisley Analine powder mixed with distilled water.

  • how can I fake a flame top on my les paul?

  • @kristreyes find an incredibly talented airbrush guy. you'll pay a bunch of money, and it'll still look really fake, tho. i'd try to enjoy your guitar as it is.

  • niceeeeee.. what kind of tape did you use... so that dye won't get on the core wood???

  • @cornflakesnwater you mean on the back and sides? The back and sides are already painted and cleared.

  • PRETTY GAY!!!!!!!...no im kidding..ITS FUCKING AMAZING!

  • dude..dont think im gonna stalk u but where do u live?...it looks like the neighborhood a few of my friends live in..

  • what paint did you use for the red one?

  • +1 for a metal guy wearing a Smiths t-shirt. Johnny Marr is tragically underrated.

  • @intrsoul true story! I also think that Morrissey is hilarious.

  • I'm not gonna try to convince you..

  • Are you kidding!?

It makes the neck unstable and the intonation bad, Never do it my friend.

  • @zbarneyz there are plenty of bolt on guitar bodies that have painted neck pockets. There's no way that a thin layer of finish is going to interfere with intonation. What about necks with finish on them? Are you suggesting that a painted neck heel weakens its construction or impairs intonation?

  • @zbarneyz The strength of the neck joint is based on pocket fit and the ability for the screws to bite into the neck heel and keep the joint secure. Again, I'm with you in that wood to wood connection is the way to go, but I respectfully disagree with your suggestion that a finished pocket would have that kind of an impact

  • Okay, i almost got scared:P

    Nice guitar xD

  • @zbarneyz Thanks.

That aside, while I agree that a wood to wood contact in the neck joint is best, a painted pocket never killed anyone. ;)

  • I not trollin but you really should not colour the neck joint...That's bad....

  • @zbarneyz I didn't. What you see there is blue painter's tape.

  • t was awsome at 1;14 and at the end

  • i hated the way it came out the first time. it was too pinkish. originally, the guitar was a very vivid, dark purple, and thankfully, it's much closer to what it once was. i'm glad you liked it, though!

  • now it's been five months, have you done anything yet? haha

I just finished my guitar and I can't keep myself from staying away from it.

btw, does the purple stain kinda fade away a little if you leave it out too long without clearing it?

  • haven't cleared it yet. I'm most likely going back to shooting poly with spray guns and need to build a booth. Not sure on the fading; I guess time will tell.

  • sei un fottuto genio!!!"you are a fucking genius!!!by italy

  • what kinda of paint should i used for a guitar, and where can i get it?

  • depends on what you'd like to do. i'd recommend going to the reranch site (can't post the url in comments, but google "reranch" and you'll find it).

  • I actually liked the red at the beginning, but that purple also looks awesome. For the guitar on my channel, I also stained the wood a sea green and also stained on a blueburst which turned out a lot better than I thought. I wanna do this again but I gotta finish this guitar :P

I think the grain pattern on that guitar is awesome

  • I hear ya, the color in real life was more pinkish/magenta than on the camera. I really hated it, especially knowing how the original color looked. I have to get around to clearing this one!

  • You haven't worked on it for four months? Looking forward to it, hope to see it soon

  • gosh, it HAS been that long! opps!

  • if i wanted to dye a guitar, would i have to seal it first or could i just go straight into dying it?

  • depends. you can use water based dye and rub it right on bare wood. or you can use the solvent based dye and shoot it over a sealed body. each have their benefits.

  • ok thanks, that helps

  • is it possible to remove the finish, make it natural and make it good good? thankss

  • on this particular body or in general? either way, you'd have to do a hell of a lot of sanding, as the dye deeply penetrates into the wood.

  • fender telecaster - black finish :)

  • ugh. those finishes are pretty bullet proof. get some aircraft stripper (you can get it at auto parts stores), and good luck. keep in mind though, that the body wood underneath the finish most likely isn't much to look at.

  • ok, thanks, yeah thats what the guy in a local guitar shop told me. i can have it proffessionally done for about £120,so if i'm going to bother at all i will probably go for that. thanks for your help

  • is that hair dye?

  • no. it's aniline dye, which is used to dye wood.

  • how much does all the equipment cost to make a guitar

  • not sure, really; i didn't buy everything at once. It's not cheap. but you can make many of the tools you use to work on guitars.

  • Do you renovate guitars for a living or is it a hobby?

  • it's a spare time thing.

  • How did u do that pinkish colour it was awsome but the purple is a smidge better but i like the pink how did u get it that color

  • it's just purple candy color in a spray can. you can get it at auto body stores.

  • I like the grain of the wood on that body.

And with that paint it kind of looks like a Blueish, purple tiger paint job.

  • It looks like it came from outer-spACE. A modern day Delilah...No, but actually I'm a plumber...

  • Nice! Is this one of your guitars, or are you doing it for someone else?

  • This one's mine, but you never know...

  • what is that finish called? i love the color

  • Purple. :) It's just dye rubbed into the wood.

  • Looks cool! How is you Gibson so far?

  • Thanks! The Les Paul is done, just needs to be wired.

  • awesome!

  • good times...

  • yep, two applications!

  • Beautiful man

  • So only 2 applications of dye for the top? And you used so little! I was surprised. It looks like a really nice top.
