Tho your kata was very smartly done, each and every one of your thrusts slapped downward, not inward. If you were aiming to break someones thumb holding their bo then they were perfect. If you were thrusting anywhere to their body, not one would have struck, but would have drug downward thru their gi. Aim at the solar plexus and penetrate, don't scrape. With the side blocks, you would have been short of a solid block. Reach a little further out for solid, effective blocks.
I thank you very much for your demonstration of Tokumine no Kun. However it seems far too perfect, to exact. The bow is an elegant weapon and this is not just a fight but a dance and should be treated as something beautiful not just as something that can harm another perosn.
Great kata. The style of bo katas we learned at my school were a fair different than this, but my hats off to you regardless. How many years have you been in Isshinryu? I'd like to know more about you and your background if you get a chance. I'm always up for meeting new people in Isshinryu/Martial Arts and like to see how other people practice the fighting arts.
Great kime, although, I don't like hitting myself under the arm pit with a weapon. Please visit my Sensei YOUTUBE site. I'm sure you'll find it very informational. Here it is: oikdodojo.

Very Crisp and Sharp, the srikes are very Clean, though i practice Shotokan and know little of isshin-ryu i was impressed with the speed and precise strikes of your kata.
@IEKUKATAKA I know its not me you directed the question to but I am a practitioner of Isshin Ryu and I can see in other karate systems similar moves as a person with a few yrs study in karate you can see how well they are developed in their form and kata skill dont matter what style of karate they practice the kata will look alien to us but we can say they do have good posture, snappy punches and good focus
@IEKUKATAKA my comment is on the quick strikes, they are crisp, i'm not a judge of isshiryu, i have no knowledge, the kata looks rushed but it is very clean, the strikes are not wild and messy, it is a kata for show perhaps for competition.
Similar elements to the traditional form, but is a far cry from traditional Isshinryu kata. Perhaps another name would be appropriate? I only saw 2 strikes that were actually on target. Perhaps a you-tube search of "How to - Angi Uezu" would be useful, if one is going to learn via video instruction.
Everyone's compliments are greatly appreciated, although I feel humbled and embarrassed by such praise--I know there are plenty of skilled martial artists out there with equal or greater skill! I learned tokomine twenty years ago and have continued to work on it over that time--practice, practice, practice! :-)
Wonderful Demonstration!! I myself just started practicing this kata and I'll say this - getting this kind of movement takes bucket loads of practice sweating it out. watching this just made me realize how much more I need to practice.
Very awesomeeeeeee! I agree with empiricist93! Even tho I'm only 15 I had a 3rd degree black belt in isshinryu karate when I was youner and this and the "kata:wansu" video u also have was great! It really makes me regret forgetting my 7 years of isshinryu karate.
Very well done! Best I've seen in recent years and that is after my going on 35 years in Isshinryu karate. Refreshing to see this after seeing so many, so poorly executed for so long.
I was just wondering what type of wood it's made from. It looks and sounds like it has an excellent feel to it. I've been using a 5.5' tapered oak bo for my practice, but I'm looking for something I can use for demonstration, without sacrificing practicality.
I am actually trying to learn Isshin-Ryu, I started looking for a dojo and I saw this Isshin-Ryu dojo. I have previous experience in Shotokan and I know about most other styles, but I'd never heard of this Isshin-Ryu so I start looking on here trying to find out what Isshin-ryu is. I was thoroughly impressed, with what I saw. Isshin-Ryu is awesome.
yea man its awesome i have been doing it for about 6 years now iam currently a ni-kiu which is a 2nd degree brown belt and its just really fun and amzing good for you man
I would love to see your bunkai for this kata. I take isshinryu myself and am about to test for my shodan. I'd love to know the reason you bring your foot up at certain parts and why at the very end, you don't bring the left part of the bo DOWN, but as a normal strike as if to the temple. Of course, everyone has a different teaching to it, so it would be very interesting to know.
@mmsmofo258 My reply exceeds the character count limit, so I will attempt to post at least a partial bunkai to show our application of this kata. Thanks for the questions.
dumb question, but what does isshinryu mean? i'm assuming it's a style or division or karate(correct me if i'm wrong), but does the word have any meaning?
Well its a style divised by our founder Master Tatsuo Shimabaku,it combines 2 primary. Okinawan styles shorinryu & Gojunryu, the name Isshinryu means one heart method. I hope this was helpful!
Ditto to Chris's comment.Very nice. I saw there was an opponent and you were taking care of him. Thank you for posting!(from a new Isshin Ryu student)stacey

TimeSplitter64 2 years ago
Excellent form.
May I ask what bo you are using? It kinda sounds like graphite, and it looks pretty light, but it doesn't really look like graphite.
But I would certainly like to get ahold of a staff like this. Looks like a great weight and shape for comfortable training.
darken27 2 years ago
Sensei Derrick's Staff is made of wood like most traditional Bo's. But it is very light for a staff.
