Even if you're not sure what's going on, there aren't many things more gripping and terrifying than listening to someone gasping for breath while they're just barely avoiding death.
I always wanted to be a fighter pilot thanks to Top Gun. This ruined that dream for me. I always thought i would be flying on top of a mig, not getting my ass shot down by surface to air!
@TheTylerMayfield reality checks are good, and remember Iraq had aged equipment.
What would lead you to go become a killer to be rightfully shot down, anyways? There are test pilots if you love sky and aircraft, and think you're brave one.
@jitejieji What? Coalition aircraft bombed the crap out of the Iraqi and occupied-Kuwait for 8 weeks and not one Iraqi soldier left to fight. Within 100 hours of the U.S.-led ground war it was all over. So its obvious that the Air Force could NOT have "easily" won the war. If they could have "easily" won it they would have.
BTW Several Coalition airmen were shot down and captured or killed over Iraq during the air war, so we DID risk casualties.
@Alientank I'm not claiming I'm any sort of fighter pilot, and I'm not claiming I've even had any affiliation with fighter planes of any sort (though I do hope to join the USAF in a couple of years when I'm 19).
I'm just saying, because idiot children keep commenting comparing this scene to that of a video game, when it's clearly not.
I'm sorry if my comment offended you in some way, but I don't see how that's possible.
@94sFinest Relax brah I'm kidding. Just funny when people state the obvious. Kudos to not being a faggot and lashing back at me like most kids would. Good luck joining the USAF. Remember, go in as an officer. No offense to those that enlist as NCO's but that's the suckers way. If I go in, I go as a second Lieutenant.
@Alientank Hey bro, I'm sure you're a great guy and will go on to do great things, but your post rubs me the wrong way. I agree, if at all possible, you should pursue a commission right off the bat. However, the way you say "someone's gotta do the grunt work for us I suppose" is a terrible way to view the enlisted.
@Alientank I have far more pride in my job as an enlisted personnel than many officers do in their nonner jobs. The majority of pilots have NO clue what it takes to keep the jets flying. When I choose to spend extra hours every day to ensure that my jet is the best and fittest to fight on the line, I take care of those better paid Air Force personnel, even though I know they will never know it and will rarely think to say "thanks".
@janosrock Top middle is the heading, top left is the G meter, middle left is the speed in knots, middle right is his altitude in thousands of feet, Middle is self explanatory.
@stoneyj50 I find it a bit confusing - does this line project the path of the bullets to a certain distance ahead of the plane, or? Suppose he wants to fire it at a jet he is directly behind, which part of that line is supposed to be aimed at the other aircraft? Or is it one of those floating reticules that he aims with?
@FilipKunc This line, called "snapshoot line" is a guncross history line. It just shows you where the bullets would go if you had fired them. On that line are tick marks marking the 0.5, 1, 1.5 bullet-time-of-flight. If the pilot has radar lock, there will also be a pipper which will be placed on the line based on the distance to target. (example, enemy is 1500 feet away, bullet would need 0.8s to reach that distance, the pipper would be placed between the 0.5 and the 1 second marks.
@FilipKunc The pilot, to hit the target, would have to get the enemy aircraft on the line AND on the pipper. And even then he's not guaranteed to hit because the Snapshoot line doesn't "predict" the enemy's path, it only works if the target stays at the same range and doesn't maneuver a lot. However there are "better" gunsights used now, I believe. The EEGS and LCOS. (Enhanced Envelope Gun Sight and Lead Computing Optical Sight).
@FilipKunc There is a dot on the gun reticle line that depicts where the initial bullet would trace it's about halfway down the gun line with a horizontal line and a dot below it. In the F-16 traditionally you lead the gun line on in front of the enemy aircraft and put the gun symboligy on the canopy of the aircraft in which you are trying to hit.
this is a seriously problem when a sam comming at you in flight over iraq as a f-16 fighter pilot you can shoot some flares after that the problem is bigger at last you can eject but then you comming in a danger ground area.Very nice flying.Greetings from Holland Piet.
@FilipKunc - If you're looking for a follow-up answer... it's called LCOS. (Lead-Computing Optical Sight.) One of the F-16's gun modes. (Probably a dogfight mode.) Each "link" in the line demonstrates a vector of the bullets' travel at a specific range/time of flight. (For example, if he were in level flight and not turning, the LCOS line would extend downward from the gun cross at the top of the HUD.)
@aaron8862006 Yep your right, he went through almost every setting. CCRP, CCIP, LCOS, and DOGFIGHT. He was probably bumping them by accident while reaching around in the cockpit.
@Kingonads - Actually really interesting, makes me want to know exactly how he was cycling through them. (I'm not perfectly familiar with the F-16's avionics.) If he really was "bumping them by accident" I don't think I could blame him!
Why doesnt he gain altitude to get out of missile lock when he has already dodged 2-3 of them? I'd just fly straight up and get the fuck out of there lol
@DwwwD sams have no humans and solid and or mixed fuels. They can do mach's that would kill a human and from launch to your rear end, is seconds if you get the tones these guys got. If you do anything besides using that speed to make them not corner, you will die, IE, climbing would be VERY BAD
Thats fucking crazy, i thought driving my car through traffic at peak our was fucked....If you look at the top left of the heads up display you can see the G-Force indicator, its going from 1.5 to 6.5 in about 2 seconds then down to negative 3 G in about one second...no wonder he sounds like he's squeezing out a massive turd
@614LkyDvls Iraq did possess all 3, not to mention Crotale, SA-8, SA-9/13, and others. The SA-3 and SA-6 are also old missiles dating back to the 1960's. Not sure what your point is.
I think the "missile smoke trails" you mention in the description are the F-16's countermeasures he is deploying. Missile use most of thier fuel on the first 10 -15 seconds of launch, and then use it's fins th glide its way to the target.I believe it is impossible to see the trails should the missile being launched from far away.
@theloopholeisntaahol No there are all SAM trails. The Sams he is dodging are SA-2, SA-3 & SA-6 all leave heavy smoke trails which are visible from miles and miles on a clear day. This pilot was from 614th TFS and I belive he did not even used CM as was reported later. Plus even if he was using CMs they would be chaffs which are shredded aluminium as these SAMs are radar guided.Chaffs do not live trails like Flares do which are used for IR evasion. Iraq had no IR SAMS that could hit 10k-15K+
@5150tt "At least" six missiles were targeted against this aircraft during this engagement - including several that were believed to be visually guided. The aircraft in the video also had no operational chaff/flare, of course this wasn't noted until the aircraft was safely back at base.
@614LkyDvls Yeah I actually work with one of the guys flying that day, who just recently retired as a full Colonel and is now on faculty staff with me. We use the original of this video in classes to our students here at a military school, I won't say which. Please don't bother replying or trying to correct me. This is my profession.
@5150tt No offense meant, my misunderstanding and you are, of course, correct. Tell the Colonel that Mike says "Hi" and that we hope to see him at the Reunion.
This guy is a BEAST! He's pulling 6 G's straight when he's evading for long periods of time but is still able to keep his cool and evade accordingly. My hero!
I believe this pilot was nicknamed Dodger after this occurrence at least by the ground crew. At least that is what Airman Evans weapons troupe told me.
i was born around around 20 day before the operations, my parents told me of all the ash and the smoke during that time, two missiles were dropped beside my home, (which was on a farm north of basra) one missile exploded close by and caused all the glass to break, the second missile was even closer but it did not explode. war is hell...
I could be in the airforce, that is exactly my SAM evasion tactic, roll like you'v never rolled before

We use the original of this video in classes to our students here at a military school, I won't say which. Please don't bother replying or trying to correct me. This is my profession.

@614LkyDvls I merely stated what the brevity term "Defensive 6" means. I made no statement as to the number of SAMs launched.

@angiicarrean You are correct, although it was only informally - is was, and always will be our own ET!

Why did he go to guns mode at 8.55?
andrewlimch 8 months ago
When he says egressing that means hes ejecting right?
dnvnflcnr 8 months ago
@dnvnflcnr No it means he is leaving the target area.

@dnvnflcnr
means hes shitting his pants id say :P
smoothpaulie 6 months ago
@dnvnflcnr Emergency Egress is basically Emergency Evactuation/Escape. In this case it does not mean ejection.

i was born around around 20 day before the operations, my parents told me of all the ash and the smoke during that time, two missiles were dropped beside my home, (which was on a farm north of basra) one missile exploded close by and caused all the glass to break, the second missile was even closer but it did not explode. war is hell...
