The State having a major role in education - when did that ever work? Pinko XXth century Europe? Commie Russia? No scientists or entrepreneurs there.
I also have my doubts about teaching children about the State and how it works. The State shouls remain feared and unknown. Why take control of something when you can snipe at it? Besides, it's a superfluous institution. Nations without states are perfectly viable.

Huh, the remarkable thing in this story is the response it has got. Today, any McCain smear is absolutely irrelevant. He gets the nomination anyway and by the fall, noone will remember even the headlines.
If anyone wants to accue the NYT of anything, it should be the delay in publishing the story. They are quoted to have judged the timing with regards to the primary election. So, while the other candidates got their portion of smear, McCain was left to his own comments.
