Thanks for the advice. I want to go really bad (not exactly college, I do want to work and find other opportunities) but I just finished my sophomore year at UCSC and I have done pretty well, I have not passed two classes, but those classes are being made up. So I have gotten 3 Cs (one for my major) and I am the first in the family to go and I feel like I dont stand a chance, I mean have I screwed myself up or can I just improve enough to stand out because I know what I want to do which is teach
Thanks for posting. I'm currently considering graduate school, and I'm glad I came across your video. I was unaware of the practice of schools specifically trying to accept students from a variety of locations around the country/world.
There was an article from the Economist on the economic utlity of a PH.D. The main point was that all though it was prestigious it didnt neccessarily mean that it was in demand
All good advice. Had I received it twenty-something years ago, I would have made different choices.
For people who hope to become university professors, my advice would be to take a sober look at the academic job market in their displine. Look at the record of placement in different graduate programs. And since academia is a snobby place, consider only the higher-ranked departments. Anything outside the top ten or twenty will be a liability on the job market.
How does the market look in your discipline, corey? Based on a couple of recent searches, the applicant-to-jobs ratio in mine seems to be running about 20 or 30 to 1. Good for us. Bad for them. But ultimately, the oversupply of PhDs is bad for the entire profession.
school is a scam

It is ultra-competitive. We recently had around 40+ applicants for our recent hire.
