  • ...oooooh so much to play with.... absolutely sick in the brain....this is as mental as I'll ever be.... in painful places with pins...lol..lol...lol...lol ..... fantastic vid. I bought the plugin on this guy's sell. It's brilliant.....down with retro vibe!

  • So much more interesting than some demos! Howard would be proud!

  • Hysterical personality.....

  • he talks like the gay bee from family guy

  • wow...

  • Wanker.

  • 13 in '83? Heh, same age as me. Cool! :P

  • The Galaxy mod is one of the best things I've used in any soft synth

  • is this guy wearing fuckin lipstick....

  • hey Shorn... havent seen you lately on SONICSTATE.. miss ya...... make some more vids..... cheers

  • I bought this synth because of this video.. HEAR THAT ARTURIA! Stop making those videos with people playing 70's funk jams!

  • Are you a rap musician in disguise?

  • i LOVE YOUR HAIR in this. you're such a cool personality man. keep it up!

  • you should play "just what i needed" very good synth lines....

  • i think bbc might want u back for there sound fx in doctor who

    lol

  • ggezos crist

  • WTFFFFF!!!!!

  • Actually the sound quality here doesn't do justice to the sound ...actually sounds better through a proper line out. Not as JP8 as a JP8 but not a bad emulation and saves having to hussle for used and abused kit passed it's best. Skill helps as well. Maybe he should have invited Howard Jones to talk on it...I believe he's still around. her and there. lol

  • doesnt sound vary good...

when i think of JP 8 i think of that sweep sound in relax by frankie goes to hollywood look it up sometime

  • I hope this ALIEN dies!!!

  • wtf is this?! I dunno i am not a fan of the jupiter sound

  • I really don't get this whole analog-digital war. Sure analog isn't the same as digital, but if you don't know why then you won't see any (and your listeners definately won't)

  • this shit could never come close to real jupiter.I have no idea why some serious bad would use such cheesy vst.nothing can compare to real analogue cicrcuits

  • ROFL THIS IS HILARIOUSLY DELICIOUS

  • who the hell this this?!

  • he is SHORN 80'S RAH (a freak gay from the future):P

  • haha yeah the hair gives him away, definitely from the future! :D

  • Are the Arturia synths worth buying?????

  • no:) they sound the same and you can test the demo of JP8 and see how it will eat your cpuresources for making uninspirational sound.

  • crazy stuff, Arturia is great

  • i love this guy!

  • I don't.

  • man, I only just woke up and after listening to your review I think I need to go back to bed for a nap. Awesome review....but take a chill pill! :/

  • people who think that softsynths don't sound warm and rich are probably using some crappy audio interface. get an rme fireface or apogee and then listen to the premium (not free or cheap) softsynths like arturia and you will hear the difference.

  • what a geek

  • I wonder, if this poor clone of Billy Idol goes nuts for a simple softsynth like this (seriously, how can you be amazed for the fact that a synth has an arpeggiator, some routing options and built-in effects (...)), how coul he react if he tries Massive, Zebra, or...REAKTOR? Yeah yeah, I know...the quality of the sound is what really matters...well, I own a JP-8080, it's VA (digital as this) and it sounds better...I wouldn't compare to the original analog, then.

  • 2 types of people, those who can hear the difference and those who cant, ive tested many plugs vs the real thing and they never sound as analogue or warm as the real thing, about time people made new synths not emulate old stuff.

  • I used to respect Sonic State until I saw this prick... what a wanker !

  • shut up you fucker

  • .

    hey, guy! you're great!

    .

  • Is this dude Max Headroom?

    I enjoy my Juno-106.

  • this guy is just crazy!!! i love his state of mind so cooooooool!!!!

  • lol, you forgot Tangerine Dream who also used to use one alot.

  • DISTURBING

  • haha. oh boy, i love you xo

  • but..

  • like it .. but not the plugin ;)

  • THIS guy is a complete f*cking tosser!!!!!!

  • if hed drop some acid he wouldnt look like that(?)

  • lol

  • i will tell you what i think. i think you are gay :D

  • LOL, nah for real?! LOL

  • BTW Rahbird I think you did a great job. The look had me very amused (more so cause I remember the 80's first hand) & you showed the synths features clearly.. I'm sold.. I'm downloading the demo right now.. =D

  • Don't know about the synth, but it's not the best performance I've seen from Jim Carrey! Ha! Ha! Ha! :D

  • it's missing the magic.

  • Hah... nice !! What's your beef ?

    xx

  • the information you've provided is excellent.... your presenting is just a little annoying... everyone is an individual I suppose.... and each to their own as they say :) - My comment on the 'Punch Thang' is probably a little harsh.... it was how i felt at 3 in the morning whilst viewing this :) - nice synth all the same.

  • The Presenter Needs A Punching !

  • Orgy !

  • A shame it sounds absolutely nothing liek a real jupiter 8. the magic of the jupiter 8 was in unison mode. and that thing can't even come close. i've had both side by side. lol don't make me laugh. the arturia sounds just like all its other stuff. plastic.

  • Blah blah blah.. Tired ol' whinny story.. Get over it friend.. the analog days are over and don't kid yourself or lie to others they sucked. They were expensive, limited in ability & diffcult to maintain.

With good engineering & sound design you'll never ever be able to pick out the "PLASTIC" soft synths from the beefy analogs especially in a mix.

So lets all play nice and drop the elitist attitudes. Synths are synths, each has it's own sound and character.

  • Real analog is expensive, and parts are hard to come by, but face it. There's a definite diference in sound. I guess if you out of cash software emulation is a good 2nd choice.

  • Yes there is a difference between analog & digital. The truth is with proper sound design & engineering you will never know the difference, especially in a busy mix.

But for academic or elitist perspective there are many analogs that nothing will ever come close to. That said, I'm a musician not a academic. I can get a great sound out of nearly any source as long as I have access to the right EQs, compressors & FX..

  • sure if there's enough crap going on you can cover up anything (wrong notes, bad samples, etc. - kind of like covering up a bad steak with sauce. Digital is based on a crytal which runs at an exact frequency (not to mention the fact that it's missing all of the harmonics above 8k). Analog is a WHOLE diferent animal which behaves diferently depending upon a myriad of variables such as temperature, humidity, component tollerance, ofset of internal trim pots etc. so NO they're NOT the same.

  • The inaccuracy's in your argument would take much to long to sort out. I think you should read up a little on DSP and Digital synths.

Your only valid point is the variables that you deal with in analog synths. You act like these things are a strength when in fact they are a huge liability. The ability to recreate the same sound consistently is important to most performers a feat that is very difficult to do with analog.

  • I'm definitely curious about the inaccuracies you mentioned. Regarding reading up, I've worked for one of the top synth manufacturers in the world for over 20 years, so yeah, I've read up a bit. The variables I was refering to do no alter the musicians ability to "recreate the same sound consistantly" but rather influence other factors that as you put it would "take much too long to sort out".

  • I will happily concede to your expertise, just prove you are who you say you are. What is your name and what synth manufacturer do you work for? What are some of your projects & what is/was your contribution on these projects?

  • :) Well, I'm not really sure I want to post my name address and social up on a public bulletin board. I've worked with engineering and voicing groups in NY Millpitas and Tokyo (Japannese based Co.) . Also, you don't need to concede to anything or anyone everyone's allowed to have their own opinion, there are no musical Jihadists (except Kenny G) No, No sorry I didn't mean that!

  • I was just goading you to see what you knew. The Analog vs. Digital argument is nonsense. The difference between analog sound & digital has nearly disappeared. The thin Casio tones have been replaced by big brazen sounds. A/Bing the sound the average engineer/musician "MAY" hear a difference but I doubt they will be able to tell which is which unless they have been specifically trained to. If the sounds are good & the listeners enjoy the music then how is this even a topic for real discussion?

  • No, I agree. the modeled stuff has gotten pretty good and if you don't have the bucks (or care to deal with the upkeep which is granted pretty daunting) it's probably a great choice. Besides there are only so many ARP 2500s and Buchlas out there.

  • Analog synths sounded great but they were so limited compared to today's synths. We lost a little richness but the extra poly, modulation sources, automation & pricing makes soft the way to go (4 me). As for the upkeep its now about software bugs & abandoned products that can't be used in new OS's or software hosts. Always a trade off but I can tell you this, I'm way more productive these days. I can do work that took days or weeks in minutes and hours. Not such a bad evolution in my eyes.

  • Trick with the old gear is to throw MIDI kits in them (for controll). That way you can run them off Digital Performer or Cubase. Kenton in UK makes a good one.

  • Never used an analog with out a midi or a midi kit.. Aside from 303's (wanted a devil fish, was much to poor) and an 808.

  • Yeah, I've got both of those moded. 303 kit is weird cause it's actually a seperate box that connects to the 303 with a D connector, since there's no room in the unit for anything more than a few wires and a diode or two.

I got mine by taking a friend out for Sushi, getting him drunk, and then trading him for a Prophet 5 Hehehe. I usually only do stuff like that with chics. -go figure.

  • I've heard that about the 303s. I've even seen some pretty interesting projects where they created a whole new case for it (looses a little IMHO). As for the prophet 5 now there is a classic analog synth huge and heavy with wood panels, simple easy to use, great for its day but had problems with MIDI kits if I remember properly (some took some didn't?). Excellent trade in any case. Does you friend have any other nice synths? I'll take him to the best Sushi in NYC (Nobu).

  • Yeah, the Rev 1s wouldn't take MIDI at all (only 50 of those made so not a huge deal). The Rev 2s & 3s would take them (i think some shipped from the factory with the Wine Country kits). - Stuck one in a Rev. 2 once. That went OK. As far as what Jim has, well he stole an Arp Axxe from me (bastid) but he's mainly in your camp doing software emulation for Propellerhead. Yeah, I've heard of that place. Is that in the East village?? I don't rember.

  • BS, even a JP6 and JP4 sound vastly different and I can here that on YouTube video's so taking a totally different thing like a digital synth, the are their own thing, sure they come close and I'm sure I haven't heard the latest and greatest of emulation but old synths will pop and his when you press keys, move sliders and such, it's for real, just analog. I remember I hated that on my juno60 now I miss it ;-)

  • As to your comment on covering up crap.. Maybe thats how you make your music but certainly not how I make mine. Any working engineer knows that your source material is often imperfect & he/she knows how to address these issues.

  • Uhh... I was arguing against that.

  • You think that their is perfect source material? HA! I've never seen it or heard it. Fine lets say you have it.

How about keeping in mind the media & the consumer's equipment. All those wonderful little distortions, harmonics & and analog variations are lost.. Practical vs academic. Truth is at the end of the day great music can be made on nearly anything if the right talent is behind it. The consumers are not psychoacoustic scientists & they only care if it sounds good to them.

  • give him a blindfold and see if he can tell the difference.
