One and most important thing I like about DEATH is that no matter how melodic or catchy or memorable all their songs are, there is not a single happy moments in their tunes. Many die-hard fans of DEATH alienated after Leprosy, Spiritual, Human, ITP, Symbolic, or TSOP (depending on their degree of brutality demand) accused Chuck for watering down the brutality. But for me, death metal is not only about gore, blast beats, satanism, or raping guitar frets. At the heart of death metal is DARKNESS.

Some say Death is not pure death metal (as it is still thrashy), and some argue Possessed, Sepultura, Master and Necrophagia are also fathers of death metal. But for me, none of these bands are credited as godfather of death metal. DEATH metal started with SBG. Master is too punkish and has the least amount of death elements. Possessed are the extreme thrash for me (maybe fathers of thrashdeath).

i think the reason why death were so much better than the other death metal bands is because they didn't restrict themselves in their writing. most death metal solos are just 'see how many chromatic notes you can hit in ten seconds and then a big dive bomb on the trem'. but chuck knew enough about guitar to construct something more intelligent. like dont get me wrong Ralph Santolla and Trey Azagthoth are pretty awesome too, but chuck just had that edge that sounded almost like progressive metal.
