I also think Advertising industry has and is over exaggerated in terms of intelligence. You don't need to be very smart to create efficient and mind capturing ads. There's nothing really new or glamorous about advertising media, as they are mostly regarded as noise in our interconnected information networks. I think the term "empty suits" by Taleb is an excellent depiction of people in this industry and others alike where ego rules, and performance is subjectively gauged and not by sale figures.
I just think this show embodies everything other countries despise, sex, booze, indulging etc. Personally, it kinda shows what the 60s were like, chauvinism is strong, people are full of themselves, etc. Today is a bit different, people are getting smarter, more deadly viruses are spread if you sleep around too much, find yourself getting to proud of who you are, you might find yourself flat on your back. Today, there's no relaxing, more urgency....terrorism, recession etc. Playtime is over USA.
I've seen a lot of the actors in other interviews, and they seem different than they seem in this piece. I feel that they are more in character here. Any thoughts?
Who is the idiot editor who let brilliant Matthew Weiner say "flaunt the law" when he meant "flaut the law" [1:51]? It's like Condoleeza Rice accusing Saddam Hussein of "cavorting" (not "consorting") with terrorists. Depressing.
Yeae... a show about the 50s... enjoyed if you are white and all other minorities cant even come close to relate to this show, specially knowing how racist it was back then... I mean its bad enough it has so much Misogyny.
@mohab18 Actually, this show is about the 1960s. Despite what you imply, I suspect that some people who are not "white" may be interested in a show about people of a different color/culture than they are.The US Census Bureau reports that non-Hispanic Whites make up almost 75 percent of the US total population even today. Maybe you'd like to get to know us? Tolerance of diversity is the rule for everyone, not just light-skinned people.
@mohab18 TV has historically been a Vanilla World for Vanilla People; Mad Men just lets you relive that experience. The past is gone, but some people just can't let go. For me, I don't own a television, or waste time watching it; I prefer to live life for today and tomorrow. The hype about this show makes me wonder where were all of the black people, and other races/cultures during the 1960's? I think that someone should make a show about THAT life and time; I would consider watching that.
Actually there is show like this its called "Everybody Hates Chris" Its a bit of comedy (but without laughing people like in other sitcoms). Its about Afroamerican family living back in 80's. and i like to watch both of the shows even if im white...
@Bartosaq thats cool, cause im black and i watch shows with white people, and i was wondering if white people watch shows where the majority of the cast is black. Did you grow up around black people or are you just naturally that way
@viewer362 this television series aims to depict the advertising world of the 1960s and I think it does this. Were there many african american CEO's or executives during this era? No. So why should they be depicted as such? In case you haven't seen this show the women are treated terribly and are second class citizens in comparison to men. Do I think women deserved this position in society? No, but that is just the way it was. The show depicts discrimination ut does not wish to advocate it.
@viewer362 I think the show "Everybody Hates Chris" is the closest you'll get. There are a few black people in Mad Men. One guy runs the elevator-not too exciting. One dates Paul Kinsey. Spoiler alert- One is a playboy bunny that dates Pryce. There's a show topic, life as a black bunny. Most black Americans in the 60s were struggling to get by and people don't want to see that stuff. It's too real. Entertainment is escapism. You're looking for a documentary.
@iamthenerd : Mad Men is to real as well. I think people WOULD watch a show about black life in the 60s. Only if their willing to watch a show that might depress them, and won't be an escape from reality. The closest someone is going to get ISN'T everybody hates Chris. Good Times is a better example as well as The Wire(even though that's a modern day tale) Entertainment isn't always escapism. It can be anything. Real life, and whatever. That's what Mad Men is. It's real life.

I love this show as well, but i think sometimes it gets kind of tedious. i mean it's the same thing, booze, cigarette, and sex.
