Great interview!! I just watched scream 4 and was looking for a good Craven speech! I agree with Mindstorm though it doesn't matter. Haven't seen the original Invasion of body snatchers yet but heard a lot about. Don't think it ever involved dreams though. I think Wes is just of the best filmmakers period. But that since he makes films.
iam speech less and encouraged by these directors why because there original and real movie producers because even if big type companys turned them down because they said it wasnt going to be a hit were wrong and in the end they gross in so much money and made there own studio now thats what i call true artists
The Nightmare from which you can not wake. I had one like that. As hard as I tried, no matter how many times I tried opening and closing my eyes, I was still in that nightmare, with that face baring down on me...
I got to say that when I was a young child I was seriosly too scared to sleep, that's the effect the film got on me. The idea of being attacked at your most vulnerable was what the whole film was about. And that is scary! O_O
i dont think people find greddy frightening enough tbh hes a cult hero which is fair but theres somethin really dark and scary behind him i dunno he reminds me of a witc corssed with a pedophile (which he basically is) i mean hes a child murderer now thats a creepy concept esoecially in freddys case i mean i cant imagine bieng like 7 and gettin captured by an old burned phantom
The concept of having to stay awake in order to preserve yourself was pioneered by the original 50's sci fi flick : "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" A VERY creepy film.
Please understand though, I'm not trying to dismiss "Nightmare on Elm St.". Not at all! I love it. I just happen to see that Craven is also a film buff and he wears his influences proudly.... as he should. So please... no thumbs down folks!
i mean Nightmare (the original) is my favorite horror movie and Freddy vs Jason was a really cool crossover (i like to compare it to Marvel vs DC which if you don't know was a comic book crossover that had Punisher vs Batman et al)
watching this again, even just clips is one of the best horrors i have EVER seen. I just can not understand, why oh, why in holy god are they REMAKING IT. I notice it took them 30 years to remake the film though. in my optinion, waist of time and not needed, the original is IT
i was reading a book last night and Wes said when he was young, he looked out of his window to see a man looking up at him so he hid behind the curtain, about 10 mins later he peeped out and the man was still there and stuck his head/neck out as if to say yeah im still here watching you . This waas also one of the things that helped him create freddy
he also got the idea of how freddy went into your dreams because he read this newspaper once like they were this kid who didn't want to go to bed because he said that he was going to die and his parents didn't believe him and this kid would keep a coffee maker inside his room and watch t.v so he won't fall a sleep but his parent gave him sleeping pills I think but anywyas the kid died in his sleep which is sad.
he got the idea of freddy when he was little because he said that this guy was staring up at him in his apartment and he looked like freddy like he has the hat and coat and clothes and he said that the guy went into his apartment building and wes craven was scared.
no actualy he stole the idea from one of his students when he was a proffesor in a college in upstate new york. it started as a class project a student brought in a short film about a nightmare that was stalking people and guess wut street it took place on elm st. my dad grew up in that town he herd that a local profesor was making a movie. so yeah i still got respect for him tho
wes craven is a complete rip-off hack. 1st he ripped off 'virgin spring' to begin his career and then he crossed 'halloween' with 'phantasm' to prolong it.
michael myers is my favve killer, but nightmare on elm street is my all time favorite movie. wasn't scary (i don't get scared) it was amazing. loved it. still do
If not for Michael Myers unexplained ability to teleport, anyone could just get on a bike & burn rubber on him.Hes not gonna chase you.Shit,I'd just go outside & walk up & down the block til every1 got up for work & play monkey in the middle with him.
Perfect horror concept.Cant be topd.Every1 sleeps & dreams. But ya never know when u go to sleep if you're gonna dream/nightmare or what you'll dream about.Plus, nobody really knows what dreams are or why we have them or what they mean.
I'll bet those film companies that turned ANOES down are rueing the day they did that.

"With some films its just blood, gore and torture?" You are NOT talking about your own film The last house on the left, Wes?!

is it wrong if i don't find Freddy scary?

i als o heard that freddy was partially based on people wes craven met as a child. e.g a homeless guy that freaked him out and a school bully

Thank God Robert Shaye had more sense that the rest of those studio heads! I'm sure he's glad too, Freddy Krueger built New Line Cinema!

I have always wanted to see the original newspaper articles that helped Wes Craven come up with a "dream killer" villain. Are they archived ANYWHERE?
