I was barely 21 and my sister was 18 when this happened - now we're 28 and 25! I'd just gotten home from work in northern NY when the power went out, and my sister thought it was cut off because I didn't pay the electric bill. :P
that's not true!!!!! I live in NY and remembered hearing the power go off - the refrigerator turned off. It occurred during the day therefore at dusk there were no lights at all.
i was in the astoria pool (queens) with my buddies when the lights went out... i was 12 and a half i guess i stayed up all night outside with friends because everyone was outside... probably the best day ever.... hopefully we get another one soon, so everybody turn up you AC!!
I remember this day. The first time I ever saw so many stars over a dark New York City. The best night ever. Me and my friends stole flares from the cop cars that were parked at intersections. So much fun. I hope there is another blackout again.
wow i remeber that blackout in manhattan wich i liv in so many people on tha streets and people thinkin of a terrerist attack it waz kinds wierd hearin nothin at night and kinda scary i couldnt sleep XD
Well, there was a reason why everyone was paranoid. It was only 2 years after 9/11 and we had a government that always constantly shoved terrorist bullshit in our face constantly, put fear into our minds. I'm from Connecticut, the blackout occurred over here as well except we gained our power back sooner. I remember my look at my fan when it happened, and I thought I was seeing things because the fan was all of a sudden spinning faster and faster, and then everything went off.
I was walking into the mall to see the movie SWAT, and I realized immediately something was wrong, it was funny because I remember people thinking it was a terrorist attack. Good Times!
Brighton Beach was crazy, ha I remember everyone got on the bus for free and we forgot our chair on the bus and my brother ran after the bus...got it back.
Well, everyone...you got a story to tell in twenty years! Lol
Wow... time fly's. That black out seemed like yesterday. It was a great night though. I saw the Starts in Toronto for the first time, and met and had a convo with my neighbours! ... And shared a quality bong with my roommate. GT's indeed.
I can't belive 5 years has gone fast. It's been 5 years since the blackout happened. I was born August 15, 1990. And a 13 year old boy becomes 18. LOL
@oleirishdragon lol btw i wuz born in '89 y i wuz 14 yr. old kid when the blackout happend (i wuz in queens center dat on dat day. w/o ac and power on that day, the mall was cookin lik a stove in the heat wave)
o man i member seein tht on the news from Tennense .. must of sucked but at the same time prolly was kinda coo ... i jus remember thats all they talked about on CNN for lik 2 days straight ...
man. it was H O T that night I tell ya! I remember TRYing to sleep, and being too hot, but loving how QUIET it was...no a/c's humming, no icecream truck music, no loud music from neighbors, not even the distant rumble of the subway. it was so eerie, but also felt like a vacation.
lol, its none of your mother or father or who every fault. It was a very hot day and we all choose to turn on our ac, fans w/e, all that power caused the blackout, read the news
OMG we joke with my mom that she caused the blackout. We just moved into our new house and she was fiddling with the intercom, she pressed a button, and the power went out. We went to the neighbors to see what was wrong. Their power was out. Then we found out the entire neighborhood. Then we found out the entire eastern seabord was out. It was a little embarassing...but we know she didn't cause it so o well
I remember listening to Coast to Coast am in July 2003, Al beleck was the guest, he said he was part of the Philadelphia experiment. He said do to the experiments in time travel there was problems with electronics every 30 years and the next one would be due on Aug 12, 2003 and it cause mass blackouts in the eastern states and Canada. I just thought it was weird that the blackouts happened on Aug. 14 2003, kind of makes you wonder.
That is extremely awesome! Good thing you had your camera with you, or else you wouldn't have been able to capture this once-in-a-lifetime scene. Feel sorry for everyone without power though... :( Cheers!
Exactly what plays through my mind. We were shopping in costco when while checking out, we passed by those a zillion TVs that they have going and all were tuned to the news about the blackout. We didnt' know until a guy watching told us, "Everything on the eastern seabord is down, a big blackout." It wasn't until we got back to our motel room when the full extent of the event actually hit us.
