(I'm talking about books being expensive by the way) usually I just let my cousin buy them for me now. She's a year younger than me but has good taste in books. She showed me: Percy Jackson, hunger games, a boom called 'Paranormalcy' which was actually a pretty good paranormal romance novel, & maximum ride series which is pretty cliched but was entertaining & pretty good (for the first three books at least before they went all enviromentalist on us & all the character became flanderized
That must suck... I know what u mean though, I hardly even buy books anymore unless I have to read it for school. I used to always wait 4 hardcover (unless is was like Harry potter & buy he time I read those only like 2 more were left to come out). Now I just don't buy them
The prices really have gone up, I got two $20 gift cards for borders a few months ago and I could only buy a total of five books. $40 bucks and only able to buy 5 books... *sigh*
You think you got it rough? I live in Canada. You think you're books are expensive? OUR books are expensive. I go into the states to get free books. I'd consider a hardcover for $25 to be clearance! Here, it's like $32.
Give me my books, dang it! At prices I can afford! The only thing I can afford is manga and... well, that used to be 8 dollars and now they're 12. I can BARELY afford them with 20 bucks after my Barnes and Nobel card...
I find the "AFL" section... uh... kinda sad... Why don't they have good books in there? I tried to read some of those... not pretty. (no offense, some of my black friends agree as well)
You must write and publish your books to fix this...
That makes no sense why they do that. You'd think they'd at least have autiobiographies or something. One really good African American writer I know is Walter Dean Meyers. He writes some amazing stuff, and his books in paperback aren't that pricey. Harlem summer was hysterical, Autobiography of my dead brother was amazing, and Dukes Handbook for Boys was made of pure win. Just random suggestions. ^^; But yeah, that's weird they'd only have that little bit in that section. Doesn't make sense.
I have a new and interesting adventure each time I go to Borders. One adventure was creepy, because it involved me getting stalked by some guy who had an uncanny resemblance to R. Pattinson, somewhat accusing me of being a Twilight fangirl just because I'm a goth. Another time, I also went to the A.A. section, and found a book so despicable that I wanted to buy it and read it to my mom so we could just laugh in horror. But even I didn't want to throw away a coupon on that.
Yeah, I think the way they price books is b.s. too. Do they price them by publishing house, because I saw Wicked Lovely and it only cost $8.97, and I bought a book called The Passion of Artemisia, and it's smaller, but almost the same thickness, and it cost $14.00! And the A.A. section is half made of ghetto trash. And I'm black too. Though, sometimes I wish that the A.A. section wasn't separated from other literature...
Melina I love your videos! I agree with you, books are getting way too expensive! I used to be like you: I grabbed a twenty and bought 3-4 books... not any more..
Btw, I woud really like to hear your opinion on True Blood (books vs. show/ Eric vs. Bill...)
Also, how did you like the new Harry Potter movie?
I totally agree with you! Recently I paid a visit to my local library and all they stocked was crappy woman's romance novels and stupid men's thrillers. I asked someone to point me to where the classics were stocked and they led me to one bookshelf! One bookshelf to hold the many classics of literature out there! Pathetic.
It's really terrible. The prices are also going up because they're trying to force everyone into the ebooks. I have one but...it's a real shame. You can't buy anything anymore.
It really is terrible about the African American literature. I'm Cuban, so I don't really get it, but I'm sure it must really suck to find nothing inspirational for you.
I'm gay, and it seems to me that all the gay literature is about sex. I *GET* that the dif. between straights and gays is *sexuality,* I get that. But growing up and living as gays we have our unique perspective on life and it isn't just about looking fabulous (men) or obsessing over "the L word" (lez's.) So much of the LGBT section is about sex, and if that's all we look like we're about to the "outside" then how can we convince them otherwise?
I don't think you are being racist; you're doing a critique of your own people and culture.
I have a feeling that you could be one of those (future published) writers breaking down that boundary of actual literature being in the "African American Literature" section. ^^
I hate how all the books I like are expensive. I agree about the African American thing. I hope this isn't racist, but it's like every book about African Americans are seduction, and being in the ghetto, and really unpleasant characters. It's like they only show one side of African Americans.
She gets books 4 me for my birthday:)

So they don't have classic literature like "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" in the African American Literature section? Blasphemy!

Such an embarrassment to the black community.. and we wonder why television programs have such stereotypes.
I happen to be one of the only black girls in my school who loves rock/pop music/anime/other things that doesn't have to do w/ urban stuff. >_>
Makes us look bad. T__T

"Why don't kids read anymore?"
Because books are overpriced and there are parents who hate reading themselves.
Basically, if it's a minority race, you can expect one-sided stereotypes. (In books, movies, etc.)

And people wonder why manga is so popular.
You're right though, books are really overpriced, and people wonder why not a lot of people read.

First you are so right about the cost of books. I love to support writers but I am forced to buy used books.
Don't feel what you are saying is racist. You are right the media does dwell on the negitive or only shows on side of a race or even religion.
You have amazing input about the future of the literature. Right there is a non-fiction book!!!
