  • Love It And I Love History Wb =)

  • Some of the best architects in history.. great video

  • nice video. thank you for sharing.

  • great song!

  • LOVED THIS VIDEO !!!!!!

  • @warrenst1955 Thanks so very much!

  • outside chimneys are less likely to catch the house on fire in the event of a chimney fire.

  • Very nice cabins but why was the chimney on the outside?

  • Thank you. Outside chimneys were easier to build, easier to repair. That's the only information I could find on the subject.

  • @suuzzee5 i was once told that the chimney was on the out side so if it cought fire they could just push it away from the house thus saving it i dont know if its true but it sounds logical

  • @suuzzee5 also , took up less vauable space. And many were build from wood in earlier days. So, there could have been a risk of fire.?

  • I think putting the chimney on the inside of the house is a northern thing - because of the extreme cold up here.

  • @T3hJones The chimneys were also on the outside because the a chimney brest takes up a lot of room.

  • @T3hJones because they could still cook in the summer without heating up the house too much most heat is done with wood burning stoves and cooking in the winter but cooking in the summer is done with the fire place or outside like a BBQ i live in Missouri out side of st.Louis you still see house's like this with people living in them but they have running water and electric now

  • @atnipjoe Good point about the heating issue.

  • Nice ole homes and even better music, Thanks!

  • Thanks so much! Love these old houses and also love the old music. Suze

  • Id love to build a cabin.....such great multi coloured stone you have.......great mountain music too....eeeeeee. haaaaaaa.....

  • Richard, you are so wonderful and your comments always make me feel good and this one also makes me smile. Most of the local log cabins were built using Virginia field stone, one of my favorite building stones in all the world. Our farm is covered with it.

  • I marveled at all the multi coloured native stone in Virginia......field stone makes great chimneys

  • Log cabins are under-rated I think. So.. down to earth and home warming, well, if done right.

I stumbled across one hidden behind white painted slates in Indiana, on an old farm residence. Just lookin' around the place, grown up 'n weeds and the like, looked broken-down of a place, stepped inside.. 'lo 'n 'lo, a log cabin, two story. Great stuff and in good shape it appeared. Of course, you always want to know how old, what the people were like that lived there, etc.

    ~peace~

  • @MageesterMixit Thank you for this wonderful story. What a treasure you discovered! I suppose those cabin owners were just like us... wanting things new and modern, and so they covered up those gems of houses with clapboards. Hope you have a lovely holiday season! Suze

  • good pictures there you have. Brought back some memories. Cabins are great!

  • I want one!

  • Me too! :) Thanks for stopping by.

  • hi,just wanted to say i,m loving your vids,great work :)

    rob

i,ve left other comments but youtube is having issues.

    all the best...

  • Thanks so very much, Rob, you're very kind. So sorry you had trouble leaving comments. I've recently put my videos under the "comments pending approval" status because it seems to help the comments stick a little better. I'm sure YT will fix the problem soon. Thanks again! Suze

  • The first two cabins are straight out of a fairytale; so rustic and modest! Too many people are accustomed to huge living spaces these days, but in reality, how much space does a person really need? I hate the fact that so many people are driven to acquire only what is bigger, better, and flashier. My heart longs for the simple life. :(

  • I agree with you wholeheartedly...everything else pales in the light of the simple life. Just find ways to lead it yourself and then you will have it. Thank you so much for your enjoyment of these lovely little dwellings. It takes a special kind of eye and heart to truly appreciate them. Peace, love and light always to you ~ Suze

  • the music, while performed flawlessly is not my cup of tea. All the cabins i saw were awesome and outlived the builders, excellent video, thank you for sharing.

  • Thanks so much for stopping in and taking time to leave a comment. Much appreciated. These old houses are so warm and gracious. Have never seen one of the old log structures that I didn't like. Peace ~ Suze

  • i love historic homes ...owned one once ...ive been a antiguque dealer for many years ,all this is close to my heart ...these are beautiful pics ....thanks for posting ...oh, i think you know my son steve bailey ...singer/songwriter here on yt .....elsmarie

  • Hello Elsmarie! So very happy to meet you! Yes indeed, I do know Mr. Steve... a fine man and wonderfully talented musician. I know you must be truly proud. Thanks for stopping in and introducing yourself. I tried to subscribe to you but can't figure out how. My husband and I had an antiques shop for 13 years many years ago. Don't have the shop or the husband any more. :)

  • realy nice video i read one of your coments up there suzzee5 and your right the old homes and buildings are the best over here in britain they are building all the old stone barns into houses becouse the farms are dieing out over here its such a shame i try to take photos but i cant get every where still lovely video bye

  • Thanks so much for your lovely comments here. Many of our old log structures here have met the same fate you described in your countryside. It's a shame really .... once upon a time, these old buildings were constructed with such hope and love....

  • i live in a place called yorkshire i dont know if you know it but every thing is stone built up till about 1920 roughly they do build new ones but they dont evan look the same but every where you look thers a barn conversion it brakes your hart to think it stood for 200 years as a barn all them familys and and now so some posh bloke from london whonts a weakend home it a house but if i tryed for planning on one not a chance i could never aford it any way thanks for chating bye good luck

  • I know exactly what you mean! I don't have money either but if I did... I would preserve and restore these old buildings. It's heartbreaking because once the buildings are moved and the history is lost, it can never be restored.... so glad to know others share my feelings on this!!

  • me too just a few weaks ago a big london firm bought three old barns near me and are restoring one to be a house not its first use but they were almost beond repare but instead of geting more stone to do the job the othere 2 are being used as doners. the oldest one is nearly 4 hundred years old and i bet they have that carved in a big stone to showe of then sell the whole thing to another southerner for a million £ WHO WONT EVAN USE THE LOCAL SHOP that grts my goat

  • The ones like these...almost beyond repair...it might be OK to recycle the parts from those. What really hurts my feelings is when the good, sound structures are torn down to make way for "progress." Progess toward what, I wonder....

  • if its any thing like over here progress to build houses for peaple other than those born there im not racist but when a country is full thats it stop comming but they dont the feilds over here are now houseing estates i wonder how we are going to feed our selves in 30 years with no were to grow any thing or feed livestock im a farm hand and i cant get a job how is that with more peaple to feed now more than ever i realy did like that othere vid i didnt realise it was your home though sorry

  • Don't know what we're all gonna do for food. Might not much matter if we don't get this global warming thing solved. I'm a farm girl too, grew up on a working farm right here in the mountains.

  • The first two little cabins are my favorites! I would love to live in either one of them.....such a lovely video. I love old farm houses and cabins and historic homes.

  • Thank you so much!! Wish I could wrap one of those up and send 'em to you! :) Most people seem to love the old houses and barns. I think they keep us connected to our roots and remind us of who we are. Thanks again for stopping by.

  • You're welcome! :) I love the old houses and barns because it feels like you are looking at and walking into the past, which thrills me. Also, as someone who loves simplicity and conscious-living, just imagining the life that the original owners lived when they first built these homes is so appealing to me.

  • Love your comments here! Thank you so much for saying what we all feel about these gracious old structures and their former owners. Sometimes I can almost feel them walking through..... :)

  • hey Suzee...thanks for posting these cabins....log cabins are so beautiful!!!

    Thanks darlin

  • You're entirely welcome...it's my pleasure! Love old log cabins and wish more of them had been preserved over the years. Thanks so much for stopping by... :) Suze :)

  • Hey Suze..Thought I would look in your vault:) Really cool cabins. I love the mountains and the homes like this. The Outer Banks are nice but I miss the mountains and country! 5*****

  • Thanks so much, Jane! The mountains and log houses are wonderful...always a treat to the eye. Your Outer Banks is also a magnificent area. Haven't been there in awhile but it's one of the most beautiful places on earth. Ocracoke is my favorite.

  • Still a good'un

  • So are you!!! Happy holidays and hugs!!!

  • everyone has "a cabin on the hill". a treasured childhood ! loving family and grandparents. These days are but few, treasured memories.

Whoever is singing, missed their calling ! Sings as a Blessing !

  • That's very well put! I have many cabins on the hill ... thanks for reminding me of them. :) The music is by Flat & Scruggs

  • are these in the Virginia mountains? My son is finishing his flight multi engine training, after graduation from Liberty University. Has another year of flight to summer daily, weather permitting. When we were at his graduation I seen many old homes, just left, as though someone just walked out. I have always been fascinated with old homes, wondering of the stories they told!

    God Bless!

  • Some of these are here in Virginia and some are not. I love old log buildings... they are true American treasures and I would love to see each and every one of them preserved for our grandchildren. They could tell some stories I bet... :)

  • i love this song

  • Me too ... :)

    Thanks for listening and commenting.

  • GREAT IDEA!! These places sure were built to last.

  • Thanks so much for watching... they're great houses, aren't they? :)

  • good one suuzzee. I'll be toe tappin all night now.

  • Thanks so much... I agree, it's a great song.

  • I was searching for this song and found your video, brought a tear of nostalgia to my eye. I just attended a funeral where this song was sung, for a wonderful lady who grew up in such a place. This was her favorite song. Thank you for sharing the "little cabin on the hill" video. :-)

  • I'm truly sorry to hear of the reason you were searching for the song but I think it would be a fabulous tribute to anyone who had grown up in one of these warm old houses. Thanks so very much for stopping by my channel...I'm so glad this song was available to you somewhere online this evening. All the best... Suze

  • When can I move in to my little cabin on the hill? Love the simple life. The simpler the better! Less really is more. I really enjoyed this...Thank you my friend!

  • Thanks so much for coming by the channel...I think you're already in the cabin in your heart...and that's where it counts. I hear you on the simple life. Here on the farm, we still follow many of the old ways and we always try to leave more than we take. This ground is sacred to me in so many ways...with six generations of my family on it. It's so wonderful to meet a fellow traveler....

  • Hi Suzy, I've watched many videos of your tonight. I just love this song, video and the cabin. If I didn't know better I would think someone move it for my homeland. They sure knew how to make little strong cabins back then. Thanks again for the memory trip back home. --:)Rod 5 stars

  • Good mornin' ... Thanks for watching the videos, Rod. I'm going to be doing the same thing on your channel, hopefully later today. This song is one of my favorites, always makes me well up. I can smell the wood smoke and the apple cellar when I hear this song. Been a long time... Thanks for the lovely words and for all those stars. :)

  • My mom was from Sicily but I just used her inheritance to restore a humdinger two story 1755 hand hewned. Each log was beautifully hewn and the proportions are divine. Located nine miles south of Cumberland, Maryland right on the road.

    It is a killer landmark.

  • You're truly a special kind of person to have loved those old logs enough to do that! It's a lot of work. I have restored exactly one of those buildings and not from scratch ... somebody else had already begun the restoration before I bought it. You're in a beautiful area of Maryland.

  • Hi again, If you type in the Youtube search engine the words Marseglia and paintings, there is a slide show with our cabin and my paintings too.

  • Thanks so much for sending me over there. What a delightful video! The art and music were wonderful and...that house! What a honey!

  • 5 stars ! Thanks for the memories and the trip back home ! I saw Flatt & Scruggs in the little town of Bragg City, Missouri many years ago. --:)Rod

  • Thanks for the kind words and all those stars! Much appreciated, Rod. Flatt & Scruggs will always be one of my favorite bluegrass bands. Saw them perform several times at little festivals here and there. When I was a kid, Johnny Cash actually played at a gig on top of the mountain just two ridges over from my house. That was a long time ago and I'm old. lol

  • This is awesome about Johnny Cash..... Oh Yes, We're all older but not old . I'm in my prime........Hum ..... Well , I guess I'd better settle for older prime. lol

  • This is awesome! the music really gets it down. It reminds me of my greatest times, which were in the country. I'm in Maryland now, but this makes me want to live there even more.

  • What a lovely comment you have left here! Thanks so much, Abram. Your videos are a dead giveaway that you love the country. They're wonderful... especially the ducks! :) Thanks for stopping in... glad you liked the video and the music.

  • A lot of these homes look like ones I've seen going through Southwest Virginia, and Northeastern Tennessee, which is where both sides of my family hail from, though, further back, one side is from Rockingham County VA. Great video, and, I love the music. Makes me think back to what life was probably like for my maternal grandparents, who were born in the early 1900's, and, sadly, aren't with us now.

  • Thanks so much for stopping in!! You've got a really great eye! You've identified the region for most of the houses in the video. Rockingham County is more civilized, more populated than where I am. The whole Shenandoah Valley is that way. Here in the highlands, we're still wild and untamed. lol

  • Ok Send It Art Mann

  • It's already on my channel, Art. Please go to my main channel page and locate the box on the right entitled VIDEOS (25) ... At the bottom right within that box is an option to SEE ALL 25 VIDEOS. Just click on that, and it will display all the videos I've uploaded. You'll see the video in the second row...it's the one on the far left. Thanks so much for your interest in these wonderful old structures! I absolutely love them!

  • Do You Have More Videos Like This One Art Mann

  • I have hundred of photos of vintage log structures, Art, but no other videos. I do have one other video uploaded of a log hog-pen, made especially for a friend in Holland. If you're a true fan of logs, you might enjoy that one as well. :)

  • I like This Video I just Love It Art Mann

  • Thanks so much for your positive and encouraging words! It means a lot... :)

  • My earliest memories are of our family home in Paradise, an old log cabin....

    Aloha from Hawaii

  • That is so special! It also means that you have memories of something from a time/place that almost no one has today. Thanks so much for sharing this lovely memory!

    Aloha also to you...

  • Nice. Good great.

  • Thanks ... so glad you liked it!

  • This is wonderful!!

Sorry to sound a little stupid :S

But do people still live in some of these as their homes/holiday homes??

    Great song too :)

  • It's a good question, very valid. Some log homes are permanent residences, some are abandoned. All but two in this video are residences year-round and one is an office building. Many of them also have been moved and set up as part of "living museums." Here in the Appalachian region, they're pretty much found everywhere.

  • great cabins- reminds me of Virginia?- Shenendoah Valley?- anyway very nice clip!

  • Thanks for stopping in...you're got a really good eye. Some of them are from the Shenandoah Valley and some are further west, still in Virginia. Glad you liked the clip!

  • cool- spent a month in Cville last year- all that great building stone and old tin roofs- heard of Piedmont fingerpicking style?- yea, I sure had a great time in Virginia !

  • Great old town... we don't get many Piedmont pickers up here in the mountains. Glad you had a good time visiting. :)

  • ...and I want to wonder back, to the cabin on the hill, too...

Got to love Flatt & Scruggs.

Cool video,. Bravo, Bravo, more, more!!!!

  • Thank you, kindest people! Have been out all day with the camera because ... the light has been awesome + very bright sky + good clouds + bounced light = good photos (hopefully) :)

  • This song reminds me of my grandfathers and storys they would tell growing up in the SW Louisiana woods, God rest their souls.

  • These old hand-made buildings take us all back to our roots. I think all fabulous old hand-crafted things tend to do that. So glad you made the trip down the memory lane and so glad you shared it with us! HUGS!! Suze

  • very sweet music :)

  • Thanks! Have always loved that song...

  • Where are you getting all these beautiful pics from Suze? And your music library...it is impecable!

  • Hi DV...aren't you a sweetie! Most are pics I took, either in this county or the county next door. Lots of log structures (1700s & 1800s) are scattered through the Appalachians. A few pics were taken by others & were used with permission. Two are from unidentified photographers. Did you see the viddy of the hog pen made of logs? lol That was posted primarily for a songwriter in the Netherlands. :) Thanks also for your comment about my music...love it as least as well as air! HUGS!!!

  • My cousins built a cabin in the woods on their farm. It's really something; so rustic. What a nifty little presentation! The music was so perfect, too.

  • So glad you enjoyed the viddy. I appreciate your watching it and commenting. Your cousin's cabin sounds enchanting...

  • So glad you enjoyed the viddy. I appreciate your watching it and commenting. Your cousin's cabin sounds enchanting...

  • Gave my heart a thrill!

  • Your comment gave my heart a thrill! :)

Love the poetry on your channel description! You write that? Lovely ...

  • Thanks, that means a lot to me. I'm learning to express myself as I "mature". ("Better late than never")

I find videos like this inspire me to explore my own reflections on life and the things that touch my soul.

    ; )

  • Your poetry:

    "Thrown into the human ocean

"Lost upon the waves ... "

Those are some powerful lines, my friend! Keep up the writing...you've got a knack for it.

  • That was great. I have a love for these old houses. My dream is to build one new.

  • If you do build one, make sure you document your progress with videos...and of course, share them with us here on YouTube! :)) Glad you liked the video...I also love these old structures and have my office in one of them that dates from around 1820.

  • Nice pictures. :-)

  • A+

    Hugs to you, Ran!!

  • Hi Suze,

This vid inspired Melle to maybe do a serie of paintings of log cabins. -Don't know if he really gonna do it, but if he does I'll upload some picts on YT.

    Greetings from Ilse

    ~member~

  • That would be fabulous, Iile! Hope he paints them. If he wants some more pictures, let me know. Where I live, there are a lot of them. Tell him I'm going to post a picture on my channel just for him... it's a log hog pen. Seriously! :)

  • Very nice video. hearing Lester and Earl out of Nashville make me think: didn't the Carter family come from your area? Aren't you located in the birthplace of the Opry?

  • Thanks so much! A.P. Carter was born just a few miles from where I live...and the birthplace of country music is generally said to be Bristol, VA-TN...which is not much further away.

  • Thanks so much. I will check these sites out.

I do like this style as well as the Celtic music from which I believe it evolved brought by colonists who settled in the area a few centuries ago. I knew Ernie Ford was from Bristol but not that it had be enthroned (careful I recall another of your vids lol) as its birthplace. Thanks for the info.

  • For some reason, I didn't see your comment until today...sorry! All I can say about the Bristol/birthplace thing is ... you know how the world of marketing and spin can be ... and once the word gets put out there, people act "as if" it had been true all along. I suppose Bristol is as good a place as any... lol But I agree with you that the music had its origins long before this country was even settled. Banjo comes from Africa, for example... go figger, right? :))

  • really beautiful

  • Thank you ... I appreciate you taking time to watch and comment. Suze

  • Beautiful video. Audio is great. You can hear the influence these guys had on people like Ricky Skaggs. Thanks!

  • Glad you liked the video and the Flatt & Scruggs number. Their music is just about perfect. Please stop in any time...I'll be checking out your channel on a regular basis. You know all the really good musicians!! HUGS!!

  • J'apprécie beaucoup...

    merci

    jacques de paris

  • Merci de vos mots, Jacques.

Je ne parle pas beaucoup français.

  • The pictures and the song made me feel so relaxed. Just perfect!

  • Thanks for your kind comments...these old houses are so soul satisfying, as is any beautiful place or structure with history...

  • I love to drive around in the country just to find such treasures as these. Thanks for sharing! :)

  • Thank so much for loving the old log homes ... they're such characters! Always wishing they could talk and tell their stories...

  • I LOVE this! ~Tammi~

  • Thanks so much, Tammi ... much appreciated! Suze

  • I want one.

  • Me too ... :)

  • Wow...these are wonderful. Great slideshow! They'll probably be there for yet another century.

  • Ravensinger, you're making my evening! Thank you so much!

  • hi just watched this one with my friend...we liked all the old style buildings..seems a about a million miles from where we are...cheers!..richard...

  • Hi Richard...I moved here from Washington, D.C. nine years ago and just love it. I looked up Coventry and see that, among others, you're famous for both Lady Godiva and Clive Owen. Clive Owen is too good looking to live! Yummy man! :)

  • i dont know who clive owen is!

  • He's a movie star. Delish! Google him. He might not do too much for a gent but us ladies like him lots. ;)

  • Thanks for the comment. I checked out your channel and decided to subscribe to you. Got some very interesting stuff there. Especially loved the tie dyed curtains.

  • Very cool vid :) I have seen a few of these ol' homesteads around these parts. Awesome tunage too! Peace, Health & happiness to you & yours

  • I like this video and i think you chose also a perfect soundtrack for it. Well done (and 5 stars from me). :)

  • Thank you kindly. Glad you liked the combination. I'm a dedicated bluegrass fan and it doesn't get any better than Flatt & Scruggs.

  • well done....although abandoned and neglected so many of these cabins and early homes still have a peculiar beauty all their own.

  • Thanks for your kind words. Am glad you liked the clip. I love old houses, especially ones constructed of logs.

  • while on the truck in the 80's I have seen beautiful sights such as these. Wonderful clip, thanks.

  • Glad you enjoyed the clip. Thanks for the kind words.
