Love Johnny Cash, love Hank Williams and perfectly enjoy Nick Cave - but for me he added nothing to the rendition of this song; he understood it, but his voice simply didn't work right with Johnnys. For me at least.
A quote I heard about Mr. Cash...and I forget who said it...is absolutely ttrue and beautiful. She said, "Johnny was never afraid to show you how broken he was".
It takes a real man of honesty and integrity to fully open his soul to the entire world for 5 decades.
@TheBigAsh1 if there is anything you would like to talk to that has been in some of the darkest places life offers, but have survived through it, for now, as with everything, message me...I became totally disabled at 41, with still young children at home, losing income meant losing house, etc —Having come though those times more than once, I feel it is my obligation to at least reach out, but only if you want or need to just chat, or whatever, and forgive me if im intruding.
@TheBigAsh1 There is always someone who does, friend. Those are the ones to turn to, otherwise they may never notice, since we are very good at hiding ourselves behind masks. Like Mr. Stipe said, Take comfort in your friends. (or whomever you're closest with), and take good care.
@soocie91 " in my opinion johnny's voice was bettern when he was younger, but he is still the man no matter what his voice sounds like... I love you man in black, rest in peace." There, i fixed your comment for you.
Volbeat's version of this is awesome..they love johnny cash too..seen them live twice and they show how much they love him..this is incredible though.
@PatternRuden Sometimes... Being loved by people is not what you need.... When you have no one to tell your secrets life is very hard... and things like that.. you know... I have friends, a familly but.. I don't have any awesome girlfriend that I could pass my time with and tell what's wrong... He lost her June and that probably made him the saddest man ever... Sorry about my english. R.I.P Jhonny. We love you man.
Whats with those Dumbass, lowlife scum ads from GOGGLE that keep popping up when u play the song. Those are more sick and repulsive than a SOB!!!!!!!!
Really CORPORATE WORLD listen to Johnny Paycheck...Take this Job and Shove it!!!! But for u Take your scumbag, douchebag ads and SHOVE them where the sun don't shine!!! SICK, Creepy Peeping Toms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm hear to hear Johnny Cash because my daddy just died and before him my husband. This and Hurt. And if some SOB doesn't like it then listen to Johnny Cash start singing "Sooner or later God's gonna Cut You Down"
One person disliked this. What kind of sick person would dislike Johnny Cash and Nick Cave covering a Hank Williams song? Who'd be so lacking in soul and emotion? Who'd want to surpress such heartfelt badassery? There's only one man; Simon Cowell. I hate that cunt.
@neonatalpenguin Simon 'What a cock' Cowell, is the dark lord of shitty music, taking over the galaxy, with terrible karaoke style music. We must unite and rid this menace, and allow real music back into our lives. God bless you johnny..
There's a real truth to the sound of Johnny's voice in this particular recording. I listen & compare back to back Johnny singing his 1960 recording & his 2002 recording of this very song... The fact that this recording is of a man who is DYING makes this song EVEN ALL THE MORE powerful. Johnny was great but there is sonething even all the more special about this particular album. I'm really not a huge C/W fan, but I am a Cash fan. I definately miss him
Every summer in the '50s we moved up to our log cabin in the mountains. I was a kid and loved it. We had electricity but no running water or indoor plumbing. I remember this song coming out of an old Magnavox radio during the evenings while the fire was crackling in the fireplace and I cleaned trout for breakfast. Brings back good memories of fine music and quiet evenings.
first time i heard this was a king missile cover. thought it a bit strange, but even their version is great. when i found out that cave and cash did a duet i was like "whaaaaat??" awesome.
@ 2 in the morning with the temps cooling into the low 50's, broke and no one by my side cept' this homemade water bong and this pack of smokes, this one hits home....I would like to cry but the tears just won't fall.
Hank Williams - great songwriter. Johnny Cash - great voice. Nick Cave - great voice, too. If this doesn't make for a great song, what will? By the way, there is another great cover version of it by the Cowboy Junkies.
Love Johnny Cash, love Hank Williams
