  • I absolutely agree that they are all incredible musicians and here we sit judging them. What a total waste of time. Just listen to them. If you can't hear what they are doing go listen to some Redneck Slappin Music

  • Brecker is such a G

  • It takes someone like Brecker to be able to stand in front of that freight train and not get run over... all cats just pumpin' it out... full blast... yeah...

  • @yvesbajulaz No stops here, it's every man for himself.

  • To put it straight, to my ears, 1 of the 3 is really standing out. Guess...

  • It's funny, when I first listened to this a few years ago I really didn't like it. Now I think it's absolutely ace!

Takes your ears a while to appreciate new sounds.

  • Great post.A real pity Michael Brecker died so young. In his last years he was flying amazingly high.

  • 3 people listen to lady gaga

  • Nelson Mandela on drums...

  • jazz future!!!

  • I like the open feel, take it in. Brecker is, well you know.

  • Dude, Billy Hart is handling this shit right now! XD

  • Three Holy Muh-Fuhs with a rhythm section on par with anybody. When I heard that Brecker was sick, I was willing to donate bone marrow for him, but I wasn't the ethnic match they were looking for. My Irish-Polack -German genes (which include the former Principal Clarinet player with the Cleveland Orchestra) might have screwed him up. What a nice video....

  • Fantastic stuff. Not much to touch.

  • holy s*it.

    that's the all star team.

  • merci jazzvideoguy : que du bohneur :)))))))

  • That drummer is fucking serious.

  • @JazzyJonas

that drummer is fucking billy hart!!! yeah! heard him @ small's not too long ago, man he was hitting it hard!!!

  • Their quarter notes are so far apart sometimes...and its awesome.

  • very nice. i like the way u play.

  • Wow, thanks 4 this !!!

  • Semplicemante Divini..............

  • Oh my god...

    So good. Period.

  • I was at this performance at Birdland in NYC, and I was in AWE watching these guys play. Michael has always been an inspiration in my playing. I'm so sad to see him go.

Lieberman and Lavano are monsters in their own right but Brecker is just mind blowing.

  • It's fantastic how Billy Hart frowns Phil all the time and bam BAM bam! hits on his cymbals again and again. I love Billy.

  • WOW!!!!!!!!

  • This why I practice.

  • Is it just me, or is Billy Hart giving Phil Markowitz a death stare the entire time?

  • ABSOLUTELY GREAT STUFF! Jazz one of the greatest things of the US.

  • "What a Great Find -Thankyou" // Bill the Heart , NAILS THIS and this Band.. From a real Drummer /see some Jeff Tain in here...

  • Interesting interpretation of "Locomotion". All three of these guys are great, but Michael Brekker is still my favorite.

  • does anyone kno what this songs/progression is?

  • @ragekagius "Locomotion", from the Blue Trane album. See HNoble1015's comment, 6 months previous to this one, for more info.

  • @redseabopper ...

  • @pgraham91

check out 'gathering of spirits', it's a different rhythm section (phil markowitz/cecil mcbee/billy hart) but it's got lieb, lovano, and brecker.

  • They are all giants... but the piano player's time is lacking... Billy Hart has to keep pulling him along... LOL

  • This is as good as life gets. Thanks for putting this back up. The loss of Michael is a major setback in the musical world.

  • Mad props to the rhythm section, too. Billy Hart is a monster!

  • You people are (for lack of a better word) effing ridiculous. These are the three most influential saxophonists of their generations, and you sit here, and complain about how "annoying" or "a waste" they are. Get a fucking clue. We have the privilege of watching an incredible performance on a computer, at home, for free, and you can't find something positive to say. Fucking ridiculous.

Go watch a football game you fucking pricks

  • @nateo5 well said man

  • @nateo5 .....Great comment !! Jazz has taken music for the people to the higest level and by the state of present day tastes jazz will continue....

  • @nateo5 THANK YOU.

  • @nateo5 Instead of the hate, constantly educate. Those are the words that are getting me through my own teaching career. One day someone will listen and her or his own life will be forever changed. Liebman came to my college to sit in for a jam session and he was... wow!

  • @nateo5

No, not all of them... just Dave. Michael is a very talented player who also has a lot of intuition and can blow some really neat stuff. Joe is very proper and has lots of interesting ideas. Dave is... well... to most people who don't play the sax, it's called "style". To people who play sax, it's called "wanking" - It's what you do when you run out of ideas and just blow with muscle memory and hoping that something interesting will come out...

  • Is there an album with this group? What is it called if it exists?

  • Michael Brecker is a total genius. Unbelievable!

  • @prezglick4

Hej! What tune do they play?

Liebman is not a waste at all!

He has produced one of the best

books to learn about saxophone sound!

Which tune do they play here?

    Thanks Heidi

  • I have several of the books that Liebman put out. and although they are good, I found that most if not all of the infomation could be found in Rascher's Altissimo studies,as well as "The Master Speaks" a book and video tape produced by Ira Weinstein where he interviews Joe Allard. I liked the tone video that Dave Liebman produced, but to be honest I found his tone to be a little irritating.

  • @prezglick4 seriously man? I'll assume that you've never met Liebs, or seen him perform live...you have a lot to learn pal.

  • @prezglick4 Well aren't you just all knowing? Man, you might want to re-evaluate what it's all about...

  • @prezglick4 Well aren't you just all knowing? Man, you might want to re-evaluate what it's all about...

  • @prezglick4

Thanks for the info! appreciate it!

So which song are they playing? You know? I want to use this song for a workshop and will look silly without the title.

    Thanks!

    Heidi

  • thats what im talkin about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ah 1999, what an awesome year that was..

    kick ass groove btw ;)

  • Via o jazz, michael brecker sempre.......... um dos melhores do sax

  • Ha, ha, somebody should try to transcribe their collective improvisation around 10: 35, sounds pretty amazing!

  • According to jazzhouse:

    Locomotion has an AABA form, but isn't rhythm changes. The A section is a 12-bar blues. The B section (Ab7 | % | G7 | % | Gb7 | % | F7 | % |) is like a rhythm changes bridge with tritone subs on the 1st and 3rd chords (Ab7 for D7, Gb7 for C7) or just chromatically descending 7th chords.

  • Great Music!!!

  • Masters,super!!

  • Mike kicks ass as usual. What tune is this..."Locomotion" by Trane?

  • Yeah, indeed.

  • pause at 09:06

  • Masters !!

  • wow the drummer does look like Samuel L Jackson lol. These guys are BEASTS!!!

R.I.P michael brecker. I loved your music and listened to it for hours sometimes

  • Grazie per il video.Italy

  • the drummer reminds me of samuel l. jackson ;)

  • he's mistaking in 4 on 4 or is it 6 on 6 or 8 on 8. Brecker is annoyed...

  • Man, Rufus and Billy are both masters, but they are fightin' each other throughout this whole thing....

  • friggin awesome !!!!!!

  • USH ESE BATERISTA ES RE TESO...

  • is this billy hart on drums?

  • Wow.. great video. True musicmanship

  • He's definitely a Coltrane acolyte. Great performance.

  • i hear "a love supreme" in the first few seconds :)

  • I was hearing Cousin Betty in there too, at the end. What a great session.

  • Yes, Pursuance! :)

  • thank you thank you Tyler!

  • wow, wow wow!!! this is just wonderful!!!!! I love Brecker. I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to see him on stage....Indeed, king of tenor!!!!

  • I love Joe and I find Dave interesting but Michael Brecker is the king of tenor since Coltrane..... RIP

  • I appreciate the sentiment, but in my opinion, there are no kings. Everyone has something to say. It ain't the Olympics.

    But yeah, Michael kills it!

  • is that my man billy hart on the skins?

  • Yes, indeed!

  • Wow...awesome...thanks so much for posting this vid....Michael was and still is the man on sax.

  • that drummer is ridoncoulous omg and MB is pretty sick 2

  • "Ridoncoulous omg" is exactly what Billy Hart is.

  • An all-star caliber consortium!

  • i love mbrecker

  • Wow! That is some crazy shit! I love it! What a rhythm section! Thanks Bret.

  • This is a sick ass Bb Blues....

  • Don't forget the bridge!!

  • This is Coltrane's Locomotion

  • Comment removed

  • Wao! Great Video!

Michael is great I love it video

    thank you

  • Nice to see this . MB puts the band on cruise control during his solo. Its easy to see why so many tenor guys try to emulate his stuff. This is brilliant video, thanks, VideoGUY.

  • wow...thats all I have to say...(R.I.P. MB)
