  • Poor parakeet :(

  • It's a very fine stove. I've used it for solo fairly short solo trips since 1989 or so. Something much like it has been around for roughly 100 years.

Not so perfect for more than one person. Is too slow and uses too much fuel.

Wind can DRASTICALLY increase fuel consumption.

  • @joe25ification I agree with the wind consumption, but also find that if no wind that two person use becomes ok. It is the only stove we pack for 2-3 people, usually two fills per meal, with a little fuel left over.

  • I've gotten too shy of the gasket in the lid to transport fuel inside the thing.

  • @joe25ification Mine (the one in this video) is still trucking along just fine (get's used constantly), but I am curious if a replacement can be sourced if needed.

  • go to[ hiramcook ]chennel the one that says [ westwind new series boil test 1 ]

  • @RJBURG Very interesting find! Thanks for sharing.

  • We all of use found out the west wing is wrong turn it over then put the stand over the stove

  • @RJBURG I will have to check this out, but it seems that it would not be as stable, the pot surface would have that odd curve up (less surface area to balance on), and the pot further from the heat source. I did just do a quick search and cannot find anyone using it any other way, can you please reply with info. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the upload, really appreciate it.

  • once the fuel hets are working, can you sit a pan directly ontop of the burner?

  • @AtomicCheese92 No, there has to be a raised holder.. even if just stacked rocks, but putting anything directly on it will put it out all together, and have a great chance of falling over (spilling invisible flame every where ((yes I did try..lol)).

  • yeah you can easily build stone bases :)

  • nice

  • How tall is the trangia?

  • @nightwalker2830 1 3/4" tall and 2 7/8" wide

  • Got my Trangia Westwind from Campsaver. It would fit in a cargo pocket. Trangia and Svea Swedish Army alcohol burner are same. The lightweight Trangia would be leaving cap and simmer ring at home.

  • @bluemountaindrivepae the Svea I was looking at "Optimus Svea Classic Gas Stove"

  • I use to use C4 to to boil my water in the military.

  • @dodoinurpants Ha! I never got to boil water.. used to just eat our coffee packets dry, then wash it down with a swig of luke warm water.

  • Thanks for the demo.I just got my trangia stove today in the mail.I do have another alcohol stove but i have to add the fuel when im going to use it.The trangia is great because you can add the fuel close it tight and its ready to go.Another great feature is that you can see how much alcohol your putting in.

  • @sksman71 That sealed lid is basically the selling point over the rest, plus its stout construction.

  • @FloridaOutdoor I absolutely agree with you. It's a piece of equipment that will last a long time.I love it.

  • Svea alcohol burners do not come with simmer rings and are heavier. Nice stove stand. Bought 3 Svea burners for 20 bucks and they are antique fom 1968. Just ordered 3 more so I have enough to share. Made a stand from a stew can with holes and it is my backpacking stove. Denatured alcohol burns clean and you can mix with overproof rum or pure grain.

  • @bluemountaindrivepae Those Svea stoves are pretty cool, brand new ones cost a pretty penny, sounds like you got a good deal.

  • @bluemountaindrivepae Where did you buy the Svea burners?

  • @tonevo9 I was mistaken I got the Trangia Westwind stove mailorder from Campsaver. I bought 8 Svea and 1 Trangia burners from Armysurpluswarehouse for 7 each after shipping. Been trying to sell them for 10 each (no buyers yet). Armysurpluswarehouse is sold out and the big old type are hard to find. The new smaller Trangia is way lighter and more fuel efficient. I got the Coglans Sterno Stove locally and am about to order a Sterno stove from Cheaperthandirt. See my ad Pittsburgh Craiglist sports.

  • I love my Trangia set. Simply awesome kit. Just sold all my iso-butane stuff. I even cook on my Trangia at home lol. @/3rds full of metho and the burner goes for 1 hour 10 minutes!

  • @Wutangspam

I really have grown to love mine even more over the past year.. I am thinking about re-visiting this video with a lot of real world updates.. I even pack it while sea kayaking.. the thing has been great, and I have no interest in any alternatives.

  • @FloridaOutdoor Same here.My MSR Superfly just sold on eBay,Tragia 27-7 UL-HA set up. Kettle, plastic winter base/cutting board,an MSR plastic lightweight utensil set, pre-heat cup along with the alloy base.I cycle tour so weight don't really bother me but really, all up?It is not overly heavy anyway. Cooking at home with this. I use less than a liter of metho a week most of the times. That is breakfast and a fair sized dinner. Long live Trangia.Well it will as it simply lasts forever doesn't it

  • Nice video. A stand I like to use is the Evernew Cross Stand. It's actually designed for the Evernew alcohol stove but works great with the Trangia. Also the extended ledge below the cap threads is a reservoir to put a small amount of alcohol to prime the stove. By using this the stove will prime much quicker and the fuel will fire from the jets.

  • @1jump2many

    Thanks for the additional info!

  • Another stand is the "Concept Little John" Stand. Works very well.

  • @jntroisi

    Nice! Thanks for the tip!

  • is that some bald eagle?

  • will the metal stand work with the canteen cup?

  • @drumjitsu

It does balance on there.. but dont breath too heavy near it.. lol. A canteen cup is all I use, so I wound up cutting a small piece of metal coat hanger, just a straight piece with hooked ends, to clip on the stand, and make up for the 3rd leg. That has been working for a while now.

  • @FloridaOutdoor

Well its not all I use, I should say.. but it is my preferred method when going solo.

  • Thanks for the vid!.Think I will get one.

  • Exactly where did u get the information that this thing is supposed to be nonleaking?

Mine will leak if u tangle it in ur hands for about 30 seconds...ad I have tighten the lid hard enough.

  • @assholebjorn

Besides the manufacturer description.. through multiple and repeated usage for the past year.. not a drop,.. any where.. anytime. Change your rubber seal.

  • Could you us rubbing alcohol in this thing? I'm not sure what denature alcohol is, and what the differences are between the two. Any input on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

  • @Tegulicious Well, long story short.. denatured alcohol burns hotter, longer. I have also heard that it transports more safely (does not expand as much as rubbing alcohol when shook or warmed by the heat of the day). It can be found under various names, methylated spirits, shellac thinner, marine stove fuel, liquid fondue fuel, or chafing dish fuel. It is easily found in marinas, boat shops and in the paint departments of most hardware or big box stores. I buy Kleen Strip-SLX brand at Home Depot

  • @FloridaOutdoor Thanks man, I'm going to get me one of those trangia stoves!!

  • Alot of "too weighty / bulky comments but the long and short of it with the Trangia systems. EVERYTHING is there and usually fits in the 1 package. Bulletproof too. Simply cannot go wrong in my eyes.

  • @Wutangspam

Thanks for the comment and input, I have not tried the whole system.. but at the same time I am very weight conscious when hiking through the swamp for days at a time.. right down to a titanium spork and tent stakes :) So my immediate thought was a simple pan, holder, and just the stove would be lighter/smaller, for my uses. The complete Trangia system is undoubtedly a great product if the stove itself is any indicator, and I would not knock that. Thanks again.

  • @maxnapierson not swedish army burners xD...

  • @maxnapierson I believe so

  • I notice that your flame is reddish. What fuel did you use? I used Heet and my flame was very clean and blueish. Thanks for the vid.

  • @aguswidjaja

    Thanks, and denatured alcohol.

  • Very nice video. What is the brand/ name of the cooking pot/ pan set? Thx

  • @s101ec

I was actually given that set, and I am not sure who makes it. Thanks for the comment!

  • Very nice video. What is the brand/ name of the cooking pot/ pan set? Thx

  • you could use your multi tool for tongs ...

  • Great review

  • i just bought one of these ... nice video..what type of containers can you store heet gasline anti freeze?

  • I use the Trangia poly fuel bottles with the safety pour top.

  • great vid 5stars

  • Thanks

  • just bought one, any advice on a wind screen?

  • I was looking at the MSR heat shield and windscreen, I also found that Coleman makes the same thing for 1/3 the price. I also found one by White Box that is even less, I am not sure of the quality of the latter two. Tomorrow I will be looking at my scrap materials and see if I cannot create a nifty one to work with my Westwind stove base.

Hope you enjoy the stove. Cooked grits on mine this morning in 32f weather, in some wind, on the waterfront, while I was fishing.. worked great.

  • @bigsammieking coghlan also makes a folding stove, like a portable metal box that this stove fits inside, makes a brilliant windscreen and pot holder

  • @johnmonk66 you're a gay piece of shit!

  • trangia has special made windscreens for their burners BUT theyre more or less for their own line of aluminium pots and pans

  • @ahoyhoy79

The Trangia sets are nice, but I think its all too bulky.

  • @FloridaOutdoor point taken, my friend!
