I am a Catholic, but I recognize that the Church is far too powerful and distant from people for people (especially non-catholics) not to have strong suspicions against its integrity. What's more, episodes of corruption or crime or sin are present in the Church. In the Middle Ages it was even worse (the Church had ended up ONLY handling temporal matters). I am in favour of the progressive return to the Gospel's notions of simplicity, poverty, self-sacrifice and fraternal love.
JD, you do of course realize that the purpose of the reformation was to REFORM the world of Christendom back to Biblical principles correct? Of course for this many of the reformers were MURDERED. Did Jesus not say that it is nearly impossible for a rich man to attain the Kingdom?

I do not criticise the reformers for doing what they did, and the truth is that even the Catholic Church itself, after the Reformation, had to stop and think, and we have to thank the Reformers for that. With Trento's Council the Church initiated the Counterreform, many of the excesses that had characterized the Middle Ages were ended, and things improved (for instance, there were no longer Popes with lovers or Popes approving of wars, as unfortunately had occurred earlier).
To sum up: the Church in the Middle Ages was horrible. The reformers seceded, but they also compelled the Church to begin to slowly come back to the Gospel's origins. Still today, the objective has not been reached, because I cannot approve of many things the Church does and says (as I said in my earlier post). But I do not "hate" the Church, because 1) on the whole, it has improved since the Middle Ages 2) it will NEVER be perfect, because it is human. We just have to strive day by day.
I was forgetting... yes, many of the reformers were murdered; BUT 1) they killed people as well. At that time, everybody killed everybody in the name of "God"; everything was made in the name of "God", even things that had more to do with politics, economics or personal interests (crusades, Teutonic wars, Charles V's wars, 30 years war...). If you refer to the "codified doctrines" of Inquisition, I couldn't say they were removed by Protestants and "remained there" for Catholics, because there is evidence to the contrary of both (1. Protestants killed heretics too, during the XVI century wars 2. they even killed heretics much later than Catholics stopped doing it, e.g. in XVII century America). History went on for everybody. Finally, I believe God would not operate to divide his sons, but for their general good. Mine and yours.

For instance, 1) you mention a part of the Bible where God separated people, but a part of the Bible where God united people could be just as easily found and mentioned. What's more: I thought it was PROTESTANTS, and not Catholics, that fought for a deeper (and not letter-by-letter, as the Church did) interpretation of the Holy Writings?

They are not forbidden to marry. There are married priests. Men who wish to consecrate their lives and live celibate lives CHOOSE to join the priesthood. However there are those who were already married, such as those that were priests in the anglican church. The Catholic Church consists of the Western and eastern churches, the eastern churches have married priests. So no one is forbidden from marrying.
The Church encourages everyone to seek out what God calls them to do, and if it is in the priesthood, then they are encouraged to do so. If it is in marriage they are encouraged to do so, if it is in celibacy without the priesthood, they are also encouraged. The church doesn't forbid anyone to marry, they CHOOSE not to marry.

Protestant preachers arent molesting children at nearly the rate at which catholic priests do. This is a fact. That statistic you just brought up is complete garbage. Marriage is not a sacrament, there are only two sacraments, baptism and communion and the catholic church does neither of those properly. The eatern orthodox church does not practice priestly celebacy because it is a creation of the western pope during the Lateran Council in 1123.
I will provide you with credible statistics that say protestant preachers have a higher case of sexual abuse than catholic clergy. u know about catholics bcus the world focuses on us more. marriage is a sacrament. it is a covenant between man and woman, it represents the union between Christ and the Church, and we know that the union btwn christ and the church is a covenant, making it sacramental.
I can assure you we are the only ones that do the all sacraments as instructed in the Bible. With communion, the Lord specifically says that the he IS the bread, not that the bread is a symbol of him. At the Last Supper he said "this IS my body" he didn't say this is a symbol of my body. He said "EAT OF MY FLESH" not eat of a symbol of my flesh. When the disciples walked away he didn't stop them to explain, they knew what he meant. He meant literally EAT HIS FLESH AND DRINK HIS BLOOD.
Well then Jesus Christ must have been a western Pope for staying celibate, and St. Paul must have been also.Go and read 1 Corinthians 7. This is Paul talking about how it is better for a minister not to marry. The Church doesn't forbid anyone to marry, and priests who no longer want to be celibate can step down and get married. Funny enough statistics show that those who do step down end up having a bad marriage. When God calls he means it. Also Jeremiah was forbidden to marry by God.
by the way, most of the apostles were married, however they remained celibate as apostles, after the death of Christ. It was impossible for Peter's wife to have been in prison with him in Rome. It was impossible for them to have dragged their whole family as they traveled about preaching. So they were married before Christ chose them as his disciples, but they were celibate when they became priests.
Forbidding the clergy from marrying and starting a family is just one of many unbiblical creations of the pope. This is because if you have a wife and a family you will be loyal to them instead of the "church", they need their "priests" to act as submissive agents of Rome. Perhaps if the romanish clergy were allowed to have normal sexual relations with a woman within the covenant of marriage they would not be molesting little boys by the thousands.
Infact the Church is the only Church that has marriage as a sacrament, that upholds what Christ really taught. Just as the priesthood is a vocation, so is marriage, and not everyone is called to both. Not everyone is meant to be a priest and not everyone is meant to be married. Also you misinterpret St. Paul, he was addressing an issue at that time. There were those who forbade marraige, and told men that women were evil and the cause of all downfall. St. Paul rebukes that.

Catholic churches are never directly devoted to "Jesus" or "God" alone, because all churches are supposed to be "automatically" devoted to Jesus/God in the first place (otherwise it wouldn't be a church). That is why churches are usually names after Mary or the saints - that all churches are devoted to Jesus is taken for granted.

If the matter interests you, there are three "levels" of devotion in Catholicism: for God, for Mary, and for the Saints, and there are three different words for each "level" (I know them in Italian and Latin, but not English). Of course, the type of devotion one gives to Jesus is much "deeper" in spiritual terms than the type of devotion meant for Mary and the Saints. I suppose this makes perfectly sense, even if I haven't studied theology.

I am a Catholic, but I recognize that the Church is far too powerful and distant from people for people (especially non-catholics) not to have strong suspicions against its integrity. What's more, episodes of corruption or crime or sin are present in the Church. In the Middle Ages it was even worse (the Church had ended up ONLY handling temporal matters). I am in favour of the progressive return to the Gospel's notions of simplicity, poverty, self-sacrifice and fraternal love.

Yes, of course. I do not criticise the reformers for doing what they did, and the truth is that even the Catholic Church itself, after the Reformation, had to stop and think, and we have to thank the Reformers for that. With Trento's Council the Church initiated the Counterreform, many of the excesses that had characterized the Middle Ages were ended, and things improved (for instance, there were no longer Popes with lovers or Popes approving of wars, as unfortunately had occurred earlier).

To sum up: the Church in the Middle Ages was horrible. The reformers seceded, but they also compelled the Church to begin to slowly come back to the Gospel's origins. Still today, the objective has not been reached, because I cannot approve of many things the Church does and says (as I said in my earlier post). But I do not "hate" the Church, because 1) on the whole, it has improved since the Middle Ages 2) it will NEVER be perfect, because it is human. We just have to strive day by day.

I was forgetting... yes, many of the reformers were murdered; BUT 1) they killed people as well. At that time, everybody killed everybody in the name of "God"; everything was made in the name of "God", even things that had more to do with politics, economics or personal interests (crusades, Teutonic wars, Charles V's wars, 30 years war...). A sad page in the West's history. 2) As I noted, later on the Church was at least partially reformed thanks to them. So, their message was not in vain.

The "reformers" never murdered anyone. Of course people who were protestants also committed crimes, some protestants even burned and murdered baptists but.. the mass murder of "heretics" was never a written down as codified doctrine as it was for the bloody papists. The Counter Reformation and the politics of the power hungry Jesuits is part of the reason the reformation was not quite as successful as it could have been.

If you refer to the "codified doctrines" of Inquisition, I couldn't say they were removed by Protestants and "remained there" for Catholics, because there is evidence to the contrary of both (1. Protestants killed heretics too, during the XVI century wars 2. they even killed heretics much later than Catholics stopped doing it, e.g. in XVII century America). History went on for everybody. Finally, I believe God would not operate to divide his sons, but for their general good. Mine and yours.

What do you think that because I am anti-catholic (with good reason) that I dont realize there are serious problems within the "protestant" community as well? They are not forbidden to marry. There are married priests. Men who wish to consecrate their lives and live celibate lives CHOOSE to join the priesthood. However there are those who were already married, such as those that were priests in the anglican church. The Catholic Church consists of the Western and eastern churches, the eastern churches have married priests. So no one is forbidden from marrying.

Protestant preachers arent molesting children at nearly the rate at which catholic priests do. This is a fact. That statistic you just brought up is complete garbage. Marriage is not a sacrament, there are only two sacraments, baptism and communion and the catholic church does neither of those properly. The eatern orthodox church does not practice priestly celebacy because it is a creation of the western pope during the Lateran Council in 1123.

I can assure you we are the only ones that do the all sacraments as instructed in the Bible. With communion, the Lord specifically says that the he IS the bread, not that the bread is a symbol of him. At the Last Supper he said "this IS my body" he didn't say this is a symbol of my body. He said "EAT OF MY FLESH" not eat of a symbol of my flesh. When the disciples walked away he didn't stop them to explain, they knew what he meant. by the way, most of the apostles were married, however they remained celibate as apostles, after the death of Christ. It was impossible for Peter's wife to have been in prison with him in Rome. It was impossible for them to have dragged their whole family as they traveled about preaching. Just as the priesthood is a vocation, so is marriage, and not everyone is called to both. Not everyone is meant to be a priest and not everyone is meant to be married. Also you misinterpret St. Paul, he was addressing an issue at that time. There were those who forbade marraige, and told men that women were evil and the cause of all downfall. St. Paul rebukes that.
