That is impressive, If it is playing i bet it was hard. Though if you know your given variables like what sound a certain amount of air passed over the topography of a material at a given shape you could correlate the song in a digital format to a digital out put. So high notes = tight lips low = loosened lips. That would allow you to make an exact replica of the song. So i don't know if that's what happened but it shows that its totally plausible if you know the math.

i played trumpet and there is alot of lip work to do it, so this is that much more impressive, even more than the other robot that plays the violin

The seemingly useless skills are actually quite difficult to program. It's playing for now, but once the technologies are integreated together it'll be quite usefull :)

Yeah as anyone who's tried programing pseudo AI for game engine code also knows... The simplest of tasks such as path finding or even "mere" procedural actions can take months to get right... Don't get me started. It's hard for people not familiar with it all to understand just how complicated, amazingly so, those things are to make happen. At least in game code I have control of the physics effecting objects at all times, robot programmers don't have that luxury.

It actually does have lips, the lips are not the same as yours or mine but they do exist. They also have sensors that determine how much pressure is needed and the shape of the "ombisher" (or as we musicians like to spell it embouchure).
