It's all metaphor. America is not the land mass south of Canada and North of Mexico. It's metaphorical: America is "an eagle" or "the home of the brave" or America is a "work in progress."
Once you aknowledge the power of metaphor you can begin to move away from fundamentalist literalism.

We are labeled lazy yet we work more hours than most in other countries..We are labeled "stupid" but we spend more on education than anyone.
