  • May he find in death what he could not in life: peace. RIP

  • I just today found this song, I wish I had found it sooner. All I have to say is his music is absolutely amazing and is better than anything Ive heard in years. Complete genius, RIP.

  • great,great song.

  • I always, and I mean ALWAYS try not to get carried away when talking about Elliott Smith's music. However, in the case of "Can't Make a Sound", well, it's just a damn masterpiece. A Magnum Opus of a song. As far as being interested in the recording process, I think that's just natural. I'm a Musician, so I'm curious. All I have is a little four track. Yet he worked wonders with four tracks. It's humbling. I think once he was in real studios his music became pretty Symphonic.

  • I hate how much I can relate to him and his music, and it scares me even more.

  • I wonder how many takes it took to get this song as it is in this master recording? Quite a few I would think. Boyce Livingston Webb

  • @DjangosBurntFingers Why would that even matter?

  • @MOTARDkamikaze because like Elliott a lot of his fans are deeply passionate about what goes on in recording studios.

    why do you ask?

  • @DjangosBurntFingers i think he spent a lot of time editing tape and playing with efx and overdubs and stuff. the actual recording process was not probably as time consuming as the process of producing and engineering the sound of the music.

  • bright eyes wishes he was elliott smith

  • @StillVandalizin yes well he has said so countless times too , a lot of singing guitarist probably wish that, bright eyes admits it though

  • best song on figure 8

  • @colafroggy Thank you.

  • This song is for every genius, serious, philosophical kid who was taken as "the funny guy"

  • @id300129 No, this song is for anybody who enjoys it. Shit, quit pretending to be some quiet genius and just enjoy the song.

  • Just found him a few weeks ago. Wish I've heard of him earlier, I love his music!

    R.I.P Elliot Smith

  • go figure.

  • god be with him<3 -neana

  • My alltime favorite song

  • I Better Be Quiet Now, Can't Make A Sound, Bye ----> spooky succession of his last 3 self-sequenced songs.

  • I think this is not the place for this rant, but anyway.I do hate people who always talk about how Elliott died. When people ask about Elliott, instead of telling how good musician he was, what kind of music he made, they only say "Oh, you know, he stabbed himself with a knife! He killed himself!" As if that means anything. Well it could well mean that he was probably depressed around the time he took himself, but he wasn't probably awlays moody. Don't romanticize his death.just enjoy his music.

  • holy shit. am i the only one that notices an incredible connection to the beatles in this song, especially george harrisons guitar? ...fucking sexy

  • @johnnycoolkids of course not my friend, i think this one could be a BEATLE, nice to see other ones listen

  • @johnnycoolkids yeah men, i think in my guitar gently.....,

  • @johnnycoolkids part of the figure 8 album was recorded at the Abbey Road studios, strong connected to the beatles...

  • @johnnycoolkids i think ur comment is kinda fucking sick........

  • i love the live recording of this ^_^

  • so fucking beautiful!

  • Perfect !,just perfect!!!!!!

  • Perfect !,just perfect!!!!!!!!!

  • the end is very very full i love it

  • this song is so awesome

  • i miss you...

  • For some reason Whenever this song is Playing

    I Cant Make A Sound........

  • "Why should you want any other when you're a world within a world?" That should be a a fucking generational anthem, and yet.. it's not.

    Thanks Mr, Steven Paul Smith

  • Can't concentrate on anything else when I'm listening to this... :)

  • why should you want any other. when you're a world within a world...

  • Best damn crescendo in the history of time, Period.

  • i love this sound

  • after hearing figure 8 a bunch of times. it starts to have a direct feed to the endorphines in my brain. every sound is inexplicable

  • Sometimes I can't get through this whole song because I can't catch my breath.

    -Momma

  • haha all try not to man

  • 2:07 kinda reminds me of his song shooting star *

  • Elliott smith reminds me of Jim morrison and Kurt cobain they came and shocked us with there talent then bam they left. i hope i can make music like that in my band

  • @wherethemindhides Just don't go dying on us though.

  • <3 the beatle number 5

  • elliott was a beautiful human being.the stories from the people that knew him the best. ist kind of hard to find people like this nowdays since everybody is so damn judgemental

  • One of the best musicians ever, and sadly one of the most under-rated. His music is a shining example of songwriting at its highest form, and the more you listen the better it gets

  • This music isn't like George Harrison. Its like Elliott Smith. He had a very unique sound, that's what makes his music so great. I hate when people become obsessed with comparing one artist to another artist.

  • @breeeegs

but surely it bears george harrisons mark.

  • I don't know. Elliott Smith was very influenced by the Beatles, so its possible. But its alot more melancholy and introspective than anything I've heard from George Harrison

  • @4l4ddin77 well, no.

  • @FEDFiLMproductions Of course it does. And Elliott would have been the first person to say as much. He even used the same kind of guitar because he loved them so much. I have no idea why people need to be so defensive about this fact. ALL musicians borrow. Fans give a crap about this - fans who need to feel special. Not the artists. They have the ability to appreciate, and then innovate.

  • I watched a movie which quoted theroux saying that "most men live their lives in quiet desperation." I think it may have been dead poets society. I think this applies to elliot as much as any of us except he was brave enough to get on stage and show it. Maybe thats why so many of us think there is something special about him?

  • he was a genius.. rip

  • @blurymind yes he was.

  • When you listen to his music, as well as other artists'/musicians' music, please listen to it for the music, not for an image. Don't like it because your hipster bro's do. There's meaning in this man's words.

  • yes, professor.

  • wow elliott smith is a true fucking hero

  • man, this guy was super talented! It was shame it couldnt get him off that hump!

  • iam a late bloomer being from portland i always heard he was cool but i was busy with other bands. i cant bliev all the shows i could have went to.i heard he stabbed hisself in the stomach is that true

  • @SuperJayson75

    No that isn't true,

he stabbed 'himself' in the heart.

There's conspiracy that it was a murder though.

Elliott is so amazing, I am happy you finally decided to take a listen.

  • @shhmellshlikeasshhhh

    * murdered.

  • so much sound out of one song. xox

  • nice hes from omaha, nebraska im from omaha too! and im in a band too!

  • @mrozzy1231 that doesn't necessarily mean u'll make it and b as great as Elliott Smith (which no offense isn't likely, ima musician too, and im not as good as him) but still good luck man, keep me updated on your music

  • @Grungekiid well i know i will make it bcuzz uhm idk hahaha

  • Its got a George Harrison feel to it. I've heard that already said by many others but Christ its soo true....same sort of style but as far as song writing goes, still totally original. I like it.

  • @aaronmyers1982 Well, blessed be the Harrison touch... It´s a mixture of "back home", "at ease", magic, and daydreaming kind of feel to me. Such awesome fellows both of them¡¡¡!!!

  • one of the best buildups ever.

check out artist jeremi simon ''big dumb head''

  • In this world of fakes and wannabees, someone real who was under the radar. Take a bow, Elliott Smith.

  • Pure genius

  • @AdamRossini No...

  • @islespatrick Go back to sleep in your bed of musical ignorance.

  • @AdamRossini I'm just not into his music, that's all

  • @islespatrick Okay, enjoy your emo-screamo, I-hate-my-mommy music.

  • this is the song on this album that makes me realize that I am someone that someone else is looking at, watching and wondering.

  • this is the part of the album where i start to feel that life is actually real. you are som

  • cool

  • Imagine the songs he'd be creating if still alive.....

  • Its kinda got a George Harrison feel to it......What you guys think?

  • @aaronmyers1982 Agreed with the Harrison

  • Fu***ng A, Kingfat44. Best choon ever. Some crescendo.

  • I'm not sure what's better in this song, the vocals, the drums, the horns, the guitar...

  • I'm not sure what's better in this song, the vocals, the drums, the horns, the guitar...

  • I listen to this song at least 10 times a day. It makes me feel. There will never be another musician that comes even close to what Elliott has done for music.

  • This song is the only thing that makes any sense right now

  • fuck yea! this song is close to my heart! Incredible sound and innovation.

Elliott, your music will never fail to move me. LOVE!

  • This drives me absolutely insane. When I hear this I hear it with my whole chest, if that's even possible. Elliott we miss you SO MUCH!!!

  • @Mackdanife ME 3 000 000 000

  • Elliott, I miss you <3

  • these lyrics make me think of thoughts in sleeping dreams.

  • Nice song :D I love It :D

  • Though this song makes me want to burst into tears I could never not enjoy listening to it.

  • how justin bieber has more views then this is beyond me.

  • truly the best song ever made. all the essentials a song needs and lyrics that are unbeatable. a cry for help!

  • Sounds like a serious cry for help from someone suffering from depersonalization-derealization syndrome.

"I have become a silent movie."

    "A world within a world."

    "Can't make a sound."

    -This song is a masterpiece.

"Nobody know what he is doing still hanging around."

Suicides can be prevented if we know how to listen.

  • @ezekieloak

    Good point man

    Thumbs up :)

  • @ezekieloak You make a good point. I honestly wish his last suicide threat would have been taken more seriously, perhaps then he would still be around making music today..

  • @ezekieloak whats really a trip is imagine how impossible it would be to write a song like this , in that state ... wow. not gonna be too many like these, Elliott was as tough as they get. Most people give up pretty quick when faced with that type of despair. Reminds me of Beethoven.

  • @ezekieloak reminds me of the girl in polanski's film "repulsion" (clips on here)

  • constant chord changes combined with music that was "painful but uplifting" at the same time, u were a great artist Elliott!!!!!!

  • RIP. one of the greatest.

  • wow

  • his music puts me in a trance. . RIP elliot

  • rip.. so under rated , left this world too early

  • i count 9 intruments and 3 vocal tracks, all mixed and recorded by elliott smith. the most under rated musician of all time. I guess sad music doesnt sell to "mainstream" people.

  • if you think this song is amazing, consider the fact that elliott plays every inurment on this song. a few are on synthisizer, but still pretty inmpressive

  • The guy could play Rachmaninoff like it was nothing. Then he could go grab a guitar and write things like "Stupidity Tries," and he'd completely fuck your mind with the vocal arrangements on that song. It's insane how much talent he had. The man was a god.

  • thank you

  • This is my favorite song of all time.

  • the genious!

  • elliott your my favret thank you ... i listen to you every day RIP elliott

  • schlicht genial.
