I just today found this song, I wish I had found it sooner. All I have to say is his music is absolutely amazing and is better than anything Ive heard in years. Complete genius, RIP.
I always, and I mean ALWAYS try not to get carried away when talking about Elliott Smith's music. However, in the case of "Can't Make a Sound", well, it's just a damn masterpiece. A Magnum Opus of a song. As far as being interested in the recording process, I think that's just natural. I'm a Musician, so I'm curious. All I have is a little four track. Yet he worked wonders with four tracks. It's humbling. I think once he was in real studios his music became pretty Symphonic.
@DjangosBurntFingers i think he spent a lot of time editing tape and playing with efx and overdubs and stuff. the actual recording process was not probably as time consuming as the process of producing and engineering the sound of the music.
I think this is not the place for this rant, but anyway.I do hate people who always talk about how Elliott died. When people ask about Elliott, instead of telling how good musician he was, what kind of music he made, they only say "Oh, you know, he stabbed himself with a knife! He killed himself!" As if that means anything. Well it could well mean that he was probably depressed around the time he took himself, but he wasn't probably awlays moody. Don't romanticize his death.just enjoy his music.
Elliott smith reminds me of Jim morrison and Kurt cobain they came and shocked us with there talent then bam they left. i hope i can make music like that in my band
elliott was a beautiful human being.the stories from the people that knew him the best. ist kind of hard to find people like this nowdays since everybody is so damn judgemental
One of the best musicians ever, and sadly one of the most under-rated. His music is a shining example of songwriting at its highest form, and the more you listen the better it gets
This music isn't like George Harrison. Its like Elliott Smith. He had a very unique sound, that's what makes his music so great. I hate when people become obsessed with comparing one artist to another artist.
I don't know. Elliott Smith was very influenced by the Beatles, so its possible. But its alot more melancholy and introspective than anything I've heard from George Harrison
@FEDFiLMproductions Of course it does. And Elliott would have been the first person to say as much. He even used the same kind of guitar because he loved them so much. I have no idea why people need to be so defensive about this fact. ALL musicians borrow. Fans give a crap about this - fans who need to feel special. Not the artists. They have the ability to appreciate, and then innovate.
I watched a movie which quoted theroux saying that "most men live their lives in quiet desperation." I think it may have been dead poets society. I think this applies to elliot as much as any of us except he was brave enough to get on stage and show it. Maybe thats why so many of us think there is something special about him?
When you listen to his music, as well as other artists'/musicians' music, please listen to it for the music, not for an image. Don't like it because your hipster bro's do. There's meaning in this man's words.
iam a late bloomer being from portland i always heard he was cool but i was busy with other bands. i cant bliev all the shows i could have went to.i heard he stabbed hisself in the stomach is that true
@mrozzy1231 that doesn't necessarily mean u'll make it and b as great as Elliott Smith (which no offense isn't likely, ima musician too, and im not as good as him) but still good luck man, keep me updated on your music
Its got a George Harrison feel to it. I've heard that already said by many others but Christ its soo true....same sort of style but as far as song writing goes, still totally original. I like it.
@aaronmyers1982 Well, blessed be the Harrison touch... It´s a mixture of "back home", "at ease", magic, and daydreaming kind of feel to me. Such awesome fellows both of them¡¡¡!!!
I listen to this song at least 10 times a day. It makes me feel. There will never be another musician that comes even close to what Elliott has done for music.
@ezekieloak You make a good point. I honestly wish his last suicide threat would have been taken more seriously, perhaps then he would still be around making music today..
@ezekieloak whats really a trip is imagine how impossible it would be to write a song like this , in that state ... wow. not gonna be too many like these, Elliott was as tough as they get. Most people give up pretty quick when faced with that type of despair. Reminds me of Beethoven.

May he find in death what he could not in life: peace. RIP

@MOTARDkamikaze because like Elliott a lot of his fans are deeply passionate about what goes on in recording studios.

Sounds like a serious cry for help from someone suffering from depersonalization-derealization syndrome.
"I have become a silent movie."
"A world within a world."
"Can't make a sound."
-This song is a masterpiece.
"Nobody know what he is doing still hanging around."
