Johnny Ball is confused about the carbon cycle. The 3-4% CO2 put there by man each year is cumulative. The larger amount cycling through the system is not. Until industrialization kicked off the system was in balance, and the concentration of CO2 in the air was fairly constant. The reason CO2 is increasing is because of the burning of fossil fuels and land clearing.

@cristop5 Not 4 percent cumulative. I think he refer to CO2 molecules from fossil fuel. A large part of the fossil CO2 emissions is "cleaned" in the oceans. 4 percent is measured to be from fossil fuel. Increase is because of fossil emissions (although half of it absorbed permanently in the ocean ...and some increase may be due to natural warming). But even if all increase is due to fossil fuel there's no +2 C in sight. Many atmospheric physicists says +1 C or less 2100.
