  • With all due respect to Manfred von Richthofen he was one of the best pilots in history and most recognized world wide. However, if he had ever went up against William Barker he would have lost and there would be no debate as to what happened to him.

  • These dudes were scared of the Canadian Sopwith Triplane squadron, and later the Camels.....

  • von Richthofen was the best!

  • I made a shorter tribute :P. Mine lacked the star wars music though.

  • at the end of the war he got shot down right???

    couse i dont more now

  • @niels718 Yes he was shot down and killed by Australian troops during a low level engagement between himself and his flight against a flight of Canadian Camels that were escorting Australian R.E.8s. There is some great footage of his funeral where he was buried by the troops w who shot him down with full military honors including artillery salutes and a fly past.

  • @gnarkillkicksass o yeak know i remember i say that at history c hannel

  • A true ace.

    He was the best.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • von Richthofen's was an excellent pilot, but his main battle plan was to wait for a green pilot, recognized by the fresh unweathered paint on his new plane. to get confused and separate from the group. The Red Baron took advantage of this. Roy Brown realized this, but even though set the trap was unable to hit the Baron. Brown's action did force the Baron to evade him. This action did cause the Baron to head down and put himself in range of the Aussie guns. Brown needs some credit.

  • Gunnulf U an asshole, this videos only message the esence of the war:

even the bests of the war can be killed. And of corse will be kill.

  • a true warrior a legend!

  • A true hero who transcended nationalism, in my opinion. It is possible to be a citizen of the Allies and "love" and respect the Red Baron, Oswald Boelcke and others ... just as I think it is possible to love and respect Rickenbacker, Fonck, Guynemer and the many fine English pilots (Lanoe Hawker and others) and be a citizen of Germany. All those men and many others, were heroes who fought in rickety planes without even parachutes.

  • Even though he shot down allies a hero never the less.

  • It is interesting how this man, dead at age 26, is still knwon internationally. He really carved a place for himself in history. Ironically, he respected by all sides in teh war, and was buried with full military honours by his enemy.

  • Richtofen has a big score becasue he shot down a bunch of planes that were barely suited for battle, that is a fact, and hemostly fought over his own country, Rene Fonck and Mick Mannock were WAY better than him

  • @Triplethreat99 uh no. He fought over France. For most of the war the Germans were holding onto enemy territory on the western front.

  • @NAllen828 OVER FRANCE, SERIUOUSLY??? Richtofen along with his German comrades fought defensively in 1917-1918. Richtofen himself admitts in his journal, that when he spotted ennemies he would , and I quote, " “turned away to secure advantages, not only in height but to lure the British machines farther over the German side of the lines." Germany dogfighters fought defensively from 1917-1918 with winds that favored their side of lines. Rene Fonck and Mick Mannock are the 2 best pilots of WWI

  • @Triplethreat99 German side means land that was under German control, NOT part of the German Empire. There is difference between lands conquered and lands part of a nation prior to a conflict. Look at maps of the front line before the armistice. There was no fighting over Germany, but fighting over German controlled France and Belgium.

  • @NAllen828 What I mean is that Richtofen , for the most part, fought over friendly territory, regardless of the country, and he fought with prevailing winds ( which was a HUGE advantage)

  • @Triplethreat99 Thanks for the clarification. I was a bit confused.

  • @Triplethreat99 According to historians, and from what I found on Wikepedia, There isn't much difference in the tactics or style of the three. They used pretty much the same methods for hunting and dispatching their prey: get in close, shoot for the pilot and not the plane, then break off with the kill. Mannock was blind in one eye and hated the Germans so he got in as close as possible and fired. Chivalry meant nothing to him. Fonck was more "scientific" in not wanting to waste ammo.

  • @TheSV3 Yeah, Fonck was an absolutely amazing shooter, his accuracy was second to none.

  • @Triplethreat99 Agreed.I have his combat autobiography "Ace of Aces", which is the English translation of "Mes Combats". He describes his tacitcs, method, and even his "mathmatical/scientific" calculations for shooting. And his score, confirmed (75) and unconfirmed (52), for a total of 127 proves that he, too, knew what the air war was all about. If you can find it, I reccomend reading it then judge for yourself. He might not have beaten the Baron, but I bet he could manage a draw at least.

  • Everyone here should YouTube "Canada Vignettes - Wop May" for a National Film Board animation about this great Canadian bush pilot including his role in the downing of the Red Baron.

  • How many defenseless 2 seaters did Manfred shoot down?

  • @mckessa That depends on what you mean by "defenseless". Most 2-seaters in Richthofen's day were equipped with either one or two rear-firing Lewis machine guns. Manfred was a strict follower of the "Dicta Boelke". But to answer your question, if you can find a listing of his kills by type, historians claim 47% were of the recon or artillery-spotting type. A fighter pilot can do more good shooting down bombers, recon, and other non-fighter types than by fighters alone.

  • F THIS DUDE FRANK LUKES WHERE ITS AT F ALL GERMANS AND THERE NEOFACIOUS WAYS ASS HOLE MURDERS

  • this guy was a hero

  • The debate continues; i'm not sure why. The autopsy showed Richthofen was killed by groundfire. Brown was not the only allied pilot in the air, but the likely second choice for the honours. Brown's own flight journal showed that he thought both the bursts he put into the red tripe were "indecisive". A higher ranked officer later scratched that out and put "decisive". Greetings from Canada.

  • Respect to Manfred von Richthofen

btw I'm American and this is a true hero and a legend and my inspiration to be a fighter pilot in the Air Force so please don't judge all Americans because of the ones that talk or post ignorant unmature comments....

  • Well done on this slideshow, which apparently depicts events from von Richtofen's youth to the day the Royal Flying Corps interred him with full military honors in 1918 (he having died in the cockpit of his Fokker Dr. I, which two machine-gun crews of the Royal Australian Army had shredded during an air-to-air chase that overflew them).

  • In the end, The Red Baron met his maker when he came face to face to Canadian hero, Captain Roy Brown. Good video.

  • @MajBlood Who is Roy Brown??What did he do to be called a heroe????

  • @musicologo1able Captain Roy Brown was a Canadian fighter pilot in World War 1. He shot down the Red Baron in 1918, proving himself to be a Canadian hero.

  • @MajBlood

No he didn't. New proof shows that the Red Baron was most likely shot from the ground by the Australians. Even Roy Brown himself wasn't positive that he shot Baron. This is in no way meant as an insult to Brown. BTW I'm from Canada.

  • @MrRebuttal If you are from Canada than you are disgracing your history and ancestors. Try telling a university professor you think Richthofen was shot down by Popkins, he will set you straight. If anything, there is no way any person can be absolutely sure from re-analyzing an autopsy that was done more than 90 years ago.

  • @MajBlood oh yes you can , because Richtofens autopsy shows the bullet that killed him entered his body from the Right hand side of his chest and exited out the left at a higher point on his body than from what it entered. Then Cpt Browns own account of the dogfight at no time puts him on the right hand side of Richtofens plane and or at lower altitude and Richtofen was already at or lower than tree top level. Magic bullets i guess huh ?

  • @Rommeljnr Perhaps. I will do more research on this when I get time. Could you please refer me to the publications where you found this information?

  • @MajBlood Was nothing i read , It was something i watched. A 1 hour british made special commerating the 90th aniversary of his death. Made by the B.B.C. and the Royal British War Mueseum.

  • @Rommeljnr I would have expected an Australian made special. Since you yourself are Australian you are somewhat biased, no offense. I will see what I can find.

  • It is funny that the Brown vs. Aussie anti-aircraft debate is still alive and well almost 100 years latter.

  • ahahahaha Wrong war .

  • ahahahaha Wrong war .

  • fuckin nazi cunt

  • He's not Nazi, the nazis were in the II war

  • @TheUndertakerSaysRIP Ignorant idiot!!When Richthofen died the Nazi Party didn't even existed!!

  • @musicologo1able he is nazi nazi nazi nazi

  • the greatest pilot of all the time !

  • What a crazy soul he got that he was the best in that time

  • In 2020 the "Manfred" will land on Mars

  • A nice tribute to a great pilot. It's a pity the allies picked his plane apart as it would have been a great exhibit for aircraft enthusiasts and a memorial to a great pilot.

  • he did have his plane painted red,you silly cu$t

  • Who the fuck was disputing the colour you dumb prick.

  • Why are you calling me a silly cunt if you dont want to get abuse back. This was started because I said it was a tribute to a great pilot. What is wrong with you?

  • arsehole, what the vfuck do you know about pilots

  • My father flew Hurricanes on coastal command you fucking Nazi. He killed germans and when you learn to talk right call me. You sound like a muslim. Kill me will you if we meet face to face you asshole you will be the prick in trouble. you fucking dork.

  • I suppose this is an example of a British "gentleman" of the XXI century.Crap!

  • @yousuarioful I am no gentleman believe that . But I dont know what is wrong with you clowns when someone cant give out a complement to a great pilot. albusah3

I suppose all you know of flying is to crash a plane into a building.

  • You are the stupid bastard who started this argument for no fucking reason. I made a comment you were the one who mentioned the colour of his plane no one else. you need to be fucked up.

  • I was paying the man a complement and what the hall do you know about pilots?

  • Queria saber que música é esta? Music?

  • from Star Wars.

  • Thank you! =)

  • The true about cleaning can be said here at this time right nov - for ever. Thanks I am clean and innocent. And I am no pope. Nor a snuppie and so on....

  • @Pirate88179 He was the "enemy" but these sides are only manifestations within the mind.

Both sides had almost the exact same rituals and ideals.

Upon his death and the capture of his body and his plane, he become a focal point of respect and a chivalrous honour ... he was given a full military ceremonial honour and burial by the non-German side! His plane was picked apart by 'allied' soldiers as if those parts were idols or relics or some holy symbol!

  • I agree with you. The key word in my post as you quoted above is "was". He was following orders the same as every other soldier involved in the war. I drank a toast to his memory while watching this. I have nothing but respect for his courage and piloting skills.

    Bill

  • Starwars?

  • ...Santé von Richthofen....er ist ein As...

  • Such a shame MvR died, he was a great pilot... i was born in the wrong time for sure

  • he wasnt the best to fly. He was good to fly and the best to aim

  • This war was obviously the catalyst for a major boost in technology, one I do not think humans were ready for. But we are adapting slowly...

This war was straight up hell. To fight in the sky would have been heaven compared to the alternative, fighting the trenches.

Those were odd times. Times are still odd. but times change.

  • @th3planetsghost

"To fight in the sky would have been heaven compared to the alternative, fighting the trenches."

    ----

Of course , if your plane had a major engine or fuel tank fire and you were at several thousand feet and you did not have a parachute (which was most common)... the apparently good aspects of aerial combat reduced to very few grim prospects.

Burn alive due to fire or jump to certain almost death.

Either way you look at it ... certainly a dire decision!

  • ...best of the best

  • Von Richtofen - The WHITE ANGEL OF WARSAW.

  • I am certain that Richtofen was taken out by Captain Roy Brown a Canadian flight leader who was helping out his buddy Wop May.

  • what is the name the song? pleace

  • No he wasn't shot down by brown. He was killed by anti aircraft guns, and no one is sure who actually shot the fatal bullet. But it may have been Snowy Evans. An anti aircraft gunner who was Australian. Get your' facts right!

  • The music definitely appears to be a John Williams orchestration, as I recognized a Leitmotif from Star Wars; but I cannot narrow it to an Episode at this time.

  • its the force theme from star wars

  • I believe it is the last Jedi Knight but i'm not sure.

  • Roy Brown shot down the Baron, Brown was a Canadian, end of story.

  • You doesn`t know anything about WW1 go and learn it at school

  • Richthofen was not shot down by Brown or any other Allied pilot. He died because he made an elementary flying mistake. He flew too low over enemy lines and was fatally wounded by anti-aircraft fire. Although the truth may not be romantic, it epitomises the tragic waste of brave mens' lives which reigned for four years along the Western Front. Manfred von Richthofen, RIP.

  • Popkin was an anti-aircraft machine gunner with the Australian 24th Machine Gun Company, and was using a Vickers gun. He fired at Richthofen's aircraft on two occasions: first as the Baron was heading straight at his position, and then at long range from the right. Popkin was in the right position to fire the fatal shot as Richthofen passed him for a second time on the right.

  • mckessa

I Will Kick your ass. You are stupid boy. And you doesn`t understand history!

  • mckessa doesnt know anything bout history if he/she known history then they would have know that he is still the top Ace even to this day a Tomasschlecker

  • Canadians kicked ass and Manfred's too....

  • your wrong about that kid very dead wrong look up your history before you say anything

  • Sorry, much too short. Not enough good material to honour this outstanding flyer?

  • Without soldiers to battle for their country and people there would be not artists . If you don't understand what I am saying , well you just don't get it .

  • @gothi3 : Without sociopathic, generationally ultra-rich, psychopathic money-changers running the world, and starting all the wars (and funding BOTH sides at the same time) so they can control the populations, governments, and wealth distribution, there would be no need for soldiers...

    Just sayin'...

  • @YankinMichaine WW2 you mean, you are a Circle Jerk

  • @YankinMichaine "If you want peace get ready for war." Stupid fool! You hippie peace loving freaks make me sick.

  • You guys just notice: he was the best ..still up to now... no matter of how much these guys were narcissistic (think about the times!!)

    ya know what?

    snoopy can just suck!

    peace!

  • Why is there so little coverage of this great icon ?

  • hey asshole never say that about Manfred von Richthofen, because of him almost every airforce in the world used his tactics and when more modern aircraft came around they had to modify them.

  • For " Teimrich".

" A StrammER Max" is not a Bavarian word at all. It is a sandwich which was created WAY back and served mainly in

local cheap Restaurants. In Saxony in the 1920`s the word was misused to prepose

something other than it is. I hate to disillusion you, but Manfred was NOT interested in women at all. My Gran is the daughter of his cousin, and he said that Manfred had " no interest" in women, because " flying was the most exciting thing for him"

  • he was a very good pilot but good shot by the australians

  • dude it's two canadiens that shot him down.... Roy Brown and Raymond Collishaw May were the real heroes get your facts right.

  • no you got it wrong it was an Australian in the trenches that shot him down. I'm Canadian too. the only reason why they said it was a Canadian that did it was because of 2 reason 1 because he was the only other pilot in the air and 2 because they wanted the german hero to have died with glory and it sounds better that a pilot killed him instead of a foot soldier.

  • Manfred von Richthofen was buried with full military honors in France near the Somme, because the Great War was on. In the 1920's, certain Germans successfully petitioned the French government for permission to exhume the body, load it on a train and haul him back to Germany.

As the train crossed into Germany, railroad workers lined the tracks and saluted because he was considered a great Teutonic hero. Like Boelke, Frederick the Great and others, the memory was preserved. God bless.

  • My comment is meant for " petereet11" the comments here seem to be problematically not correctly located to the commentator.

    munichlady.

  • 80? 138? then hans ulrich rudel(another german) is better than him.... rudel destroyed about 2000 ground targets, 1 battleship and other smaller ships.... never shot down by another pilot and got 100000 ruble bounty in his head by stalin.... great german pilots

  • Comment removed

  • Ah it must be nice to be ignorant

  • How dare you insult the memory of such a marvellously heroic young man. You are an illiterate idiot who obviously will never be able to comprehend what it is to live up to duty and honor. We "German Creeps" built up a land brick by brick out of the ruins perpetrated by a Dictator who unfortunately fooled most of the citizens.

If you want to find a " fag" , look in your own mirror, or get out and DO something for your country. You wont make anyone proud of you by spewing filth. Shame on you.

  • i agree with you munichlady, im german myself. i do understand that alot of people dont understand what he did. He was agreat man feared and respected by both sides. Even today Manfred von Richthofen is still the Ace of Aces of all the wars past and present, he was also the one who gave the world how to engage in arial combat.

  • Thank you. He was indeed a great young man.

  • He was Shot down by either Canadian Pilots or Australian AA gunners, not the Americans, you stupid piece of shit. Richtofen was a true hero who showed as much respect for his opponents as he did for his allies, the Australians, despite being his opponents showed him that same respect by giving him a burial with full military honors. By the way asshole 50 million Americans are predominantley of German descent, and probably half have some German ancestry in them.

  • Comment removed

  • Yes he seems like good guy too, and Roy Brown who risked his life to save him and Von Richtoffen who went in to save a struggling German pilots life. One thing I wonder though is if you know who "Wop" May is then how come you claimed the Americans shot him down?

  • i meant like north americans. please forget my first comment and i am now making a tribute video for wop may and please watch it once it is fineshed. i just removed all my retarded comments.

  • no by an AA gunner it was a normal rifle red baron was flying low so the australian too a shot. it was inpossible for the canadian because 1 his guns were jammed and 2 red baron was behind him

  • Beautiful:D Manfred was the best!

  • i thought it was 80 :S

    but who cares, great man!!!!

  • He was a real hero, pioneer of the technical fights in the air and a fearless young man. And he was born on May 2, like me. :)

  • baron heroe de cuentos

amo de las nuves señor del viento

    baron vives un sueño...

    the red baron

  • was it 138 kills ,? he shot down

  • nice

  • If you liked this, you may like to know that there is a feature film coming...

  • the last knight!!!!!!!!

  • He was a really good looking guy and I agree with you guys he is a true hero. R.I.P Manfred. I want to learn more about him.

Question. Any of you guys from canada? Just asking.

  • yeah im from saskatchewan

  • Happy Birthday from italy, Manfred...

we were enemies, but I can recognise a Hero...

  • I may be an American, but I can appreciate greatness. Manfred von Richthofen was a great ace. I agree also that people who don't know anything should be silent. If you want to learn then you should read a book. Don't just spout something off as if you know what you're talking about.

As a fellow American, Exonic22, you shame me.

  • Thats right your an american and your country werent even in it when this man was fighting. So you to should be silent as well.

  • Someone whose account was closed decides to attack me for honoring a real war hero???

Good thing he's gone. I'd rip him a new one if he were still here.

  • Your country wasn't in it the War between the States when it went down, so no dig when European states are at each other's throats we should of participated either.

  • This video was posted by an American ,

But your right people that don't know anything should shut their mouth

  • shut your fucking face you american bastard!

  • Thanks for pointing that out I thought nobody else knew

  • Today on 21th april is the 90th anniversary of his death. What a shame that such a fighter didn't live to fly in the battle of Britain ... Died with 25 years he is still the true ace of aces! Rest in peace Freiherr

  • hey i realy feel sad because he is dead... dunno if u ppl know but he was very cool, and he was a great and kind man... well every hero dies

  • The colder the fresher.

Sorry, but please do not believe the hearsay, only or what you see in TV. Read at least one book not only on war-history but about the real man.

Richthofen would have been none of my friends. Death blur everything and give people the freedom to create verdicts, than re-create history along their gusto, truth follows.

Yes, would he live today, it could be the other way around. Most heroes are alive, today.

  • muito bom

  • the music is from STAR WARS

  • classic von Richthofen

    GermaN Bananaz

  • the greatest fighter pilots do not get shot down. he was awesome , but forgot he was human.

  • The Baron was hit by a "golden BB" from the ground. He was never defeated in the air.

  • The greatest fighter pilot of all times

  • nicely done

  • His cousin, Wolfram von Richthofen later became a Field Marshall of the Luftwaffe during World War 2, and like his cousin, he was also a flying ace.

  • freiherr von richthofen was shot from australien soldier by ground, not by plane.

  • Actually, Canadian Roy Brown shot down the Red Baron. Brown dived out of dogfight and jumped MvR just as he was about to shoot down a rookie pilot, Wilfred May, another Canadian.

  • No, von Richtofen was shot down by Australian ground gunners. Brown chased him but the autopsy proved he couldn't have fired the fatal shot.

  • Yeah right...An Australian moving a heavy Vickers machine gun, using it as an anti-aircraft gun(!), hit a moving target from 400 yards away with a perfect leading shot with a bullet losing velocity and altitude...and Roy Brown, a certified ace and on Ricththofen's tail missed from 30 yards! The Australians never give up on their wild claims. There was no autopsy. You've seen too many conspiracy theory documentaries.

  • No it actually was a biography of von Richtofen I read as a kid. I stand to be corrected. Agree on your comment on Australians though!

  • Yes I know...A lot of books have been written in the past 30 years(it all started by 3 books in 1969/1970)'proving' that any one of three Australians brought him down. They all discredit each other. The latest big book 'Aces Falling'(2007) backs up Brown.

  • I don't think Brown shot him down becose the baron was brought down by only one bullet. It seems more likely that it was just a lucky shot from some Australian ground fire.

  • he got buried by snoopy after he shot him down and killed him

  • Who buried him and where ?

  • of course they would bury him like that! men had more honor back then than they do now!

  • my great-great grandad was with him when he got shot down

  • My great-grandfather had the chance to dogfight the red baron 3 times.

  • thats cool :)

  • But why die so many English men in the 1. World war for the French or the Russians? They are no better than the Germans.

The Kaiser was the english nephew of the King..

  • The Red Baron is my second great uncle

  • Lucky chap you are! :^)

  • The finest heroes mostly if not always, die young. The Red Baron was just 25 by the time of his death.

  • Fucking Star Wars musik? you stupid nerd. Get some real musik, thats just dissrespectful!

  • Hey Ass clown read some earlier replys before running your mouth

  • My great-great grandfather was one of the first on the scene when he crashed, hes still got a piece of the tail lol.

  • I have a theory with your comment: if it was your great-great grandfather, then he would surely be dead.

  • marseille is the best :D 100 against western allies is worth 400 against early war russians

  • Good Video but why star wars music haha

  • A hero shot down and buried respectfully by the Australian Army.

  • I'm glad they had the decency to bury him like that. That truly shows that they respected him far more than they hated him. Good lads those Aussies.

  • The mind boggles that you can glory and venerate a man who claimed ...'that his heart beat a little faster every time he saw an opponent burn to death'.

Are you also aware that his personal victims were always the least skilled pilots - the act of a worthy

    knight of the sky !
