Kill Roy now sits on the bottom of the oceian Kill Row was in the aft unassign space that Engerning used for storage. I should know as I drew him on the foward wall (bulkhead) of that space,& then mounted some cabinets for storage.
@TedinLasVegas The Pearl Harbor movie had visual inaccuracies which exceeded willful suspension of disbelief. I swear I personally saw a few Spru-boxes getting strafed.
@TedinLasVegas I think he means the 2001 version (which is pretty crappy except for the CGI) where they have a lot of Spruances lined up with explosives because... well, they were in reserve at Pearl and Bruckheimer wanted to use them.
@TedinLasVegas They did indeed use obviously moth-balled Spruance-class destroyers in the back ground of that idiotic piece of crap. They even rigged one for explosions, and used that same sequence from different angles to portray different ships exploding.
@TedinLasVegas actually if you watch the movie Pearl Harbor made in 2001 they use several modern ships that were made to 'look' old. Especially when the scene shows several destroyers tied up together exploding. It was actually just Hollywood special effects explosives being detonated on active duty ships in Pearl. They look impressive but cause no damage
There 4 Spru cans used in the movie the USS Merriel the USS Harry W Hill and dont remember the other two. They were all nested together awaitng their fate as targets later in life
@jwb34 When I was on HMS Norfolk in 2002 ( SNFL ) we were in company with the Samuel B Roberts and had a bit of scrap with some of her crewe in Souda Bay after calling them the Samuel L Jacksons on the open net, whiling away the long morning watches in the Ops. room. Epic sense of humour failour on there part I thought but never mind.
That's my dad's old ship. I remember going on there and walking on the deck with my dad. It was always nice seeing that ship come back in after 6 months.
i think i remember the D R Ray over there. I was OD div. on Antietam we got there like 4 days after iraq got they're attitude problem. She was also homeported in LB if i recall right. great times bro
Newer ships are sunk, to discover their weakness so that when ships are built in the future lives will be saved. The USS America was such a ship; close to the Nimitz class, it was sunk with a menagerie of weapons in order for engineers to investigate its weakness in order to design the next class of carrier. Older ships are sunk when coastal cities need Reefs for fisheries and big diving bucks can be made, and most of the time its just plain economics.
Boy, I remember the comparison between the litle frigate USS Stark & the british destroyer HMS Sheffield, both hit by exocet missile. Sheffield sank, Stark survived.
At least they will learn to build even better ships.
Even worse, the single exocet that struck Sheffield failed to explode. All of the damage was caused by the fire fueled by the missile's propellant. Stark took not one, but 2 exocets. Granted one did not explode, but she still had one explode and both added fuel to a fire. The OHPs are of equivalent size to a Type 42 DD too. I would think though that crew training and DC procedures played a larger role in one sinking and one surviving.
She certainly was. As was her sister USS Samuel B. Roberts. Each vessel took more damage than the critics of the OHP class ships thought they could take. Each vessel survived and returned to duty. Sammy B. is still in commission and Stark would be if the Navy didn't decide to scrap the non LAMPS III OHPs.
@OverlordShamala The Spruance Class destroyers were originally built for the Shaw (sic) of Iran. That was before he was removed from power as the leader of Iran. When he was overthrown, we had seven(?) ships in different stages of completion, that we weren't going to hand over to the new leadership of Iran. We just absorbed them into our own Navy. They were a very good ship, but they were always just excess ships. Kinda like a red-headed stepchild of the Navy. Really too bad. Great ships.
They blew up all the all Spru-cans. I still dont know why with all the crappy vessels still rusting away on the Elizabeth river or other places they had to blow up such fine ships.
Burns my biscuits. I was on the USS Spruance DD-963 from 1993-1998. She is now in 15,000 feet of water...I can't even dive on her.

@TedinLasVegas But they did use some modern frigates/destroyers for a few scenes though. They can be seen tied up to each other whilst being bombed.

why is the ship burning if they cleaned it good enough to be a dive site.

The rounds hitting it have explosives that burn extremelly hot. they will catch anything on fire thats slightly combustible

Tougher than most other countries' navies but not up to US Navy standards.
