Nothing is wrong with your resistor, there's something wrong with the way you're wiring to get data to the analog pin. connect 1 end to +5V, then resistor, then GND, Somewhere in between your resistor to GND you need to run a wire to your analog pin... I believe your analog pin should not form part of the circuit, but be connected to a point within your circuit which it takes the reading from.
