I am convinced most don't have true saving faith that is given by the Lord.. one must call on the Lord Jesus with fear and a contrite heart over their sins and ask for mercy. they will know if they are forgiven by believing the gospel with their whole heart. you know that you know that you have been savED

I think you more or less have it correct. The passage is talking about spiritual momentum.
Going from unsaved to saved is PROGRESSION. A saved person going back to his former unsaved pattern of life is RETROGRESSION. Progression is superior to retrogression.
If someone asks whether they can lose their salvation, it is usually evidence that their heart is not exactly in the right place yet. People should make every effort to go to Christ for salvation for God's sake, instead of his own sake. It's a very important distinction.

the holy commandment and the way of righteousness is believing on Jesus Christ, the law of faith(also known as the everlasting commandment)
falling away from the faith is VERY grievous!

I agree, but when you're in the flesh it's only natural to just think about yourself.
