This is the view of the world as it looks from the drawing board with a nice Starbucks Latte resting at your elbow. Clue..the world
the "real" one, the Islamic one, doesnt care about your reason, or paradiams or 28 Articles with subparagraphs A-Z. Its a world where poverty is unimportant, violence is wholly a positive thing, killing Americans by any means is a ticket to Paradise, nuclear mushroom clouds are the Allahs blossoming flowers. THAT mindset is not going to fit into your tidy plans.
When a military such as Hezbollah hides in civilian area in order to provoke counter attack and then uses the "peace movement" to protest against Israels attack on civilians..isnt such a "peace movement" just a weapon of war?
Listen dipshit, name me ALL historical time and places where "peace" was present because of a superior military force. You have failed to prove your theory just as much as your adversary. All you have is a theory, a theory that you hope the whole history of mankind exibits, seems like a fairly weak theory to me.
Historically the list encompasses basically all of Western Civilization from Pax Romana

containment of the USSR, Americas defeat of Germany and Japan and the explosion of prosperity and security that resulted. You are the typical ignoramus "idealist" that knows nothing but whats on your bumper sticker.
Apparently you've failed to understand what I was telling you, a few examples here and there does not mean the race of humanity is like that. Are you now an anthropologist? No you're not, so next time you come up with one of your crazy theories and generalizations, don't forget to put a disclaimer saying "very biased opinion of a know it all"
Look you sound very young and/or very ignorant. I am pointing out to you historical facts.. for example Pax Romana.
The peace that was created via the Roman Army imposing it on endless tribal wars. This name "Pax Romana" should ring like a bell inside any educated head. But instead it goes in one ear and out the other because you have no sense of history. So why dont you shout some trendy slogan "BushHitler" etc
are you talking about the "peace" that exists now thanks to our superior military force? thanks to the "explosion of prosperity and security" that you tout, our world under the washington consensus suffers from 35% unemployment, hunger and diseases which could be wiped out if we diverted from our lunatic policy of perpetual war and military spending. but then what would you do? you'd have to join the human race. shudder

ehunter: Not sure why you're calling this propaganda until you get to #'s 4 and 5. AJ is saying you can't win against U.S. armaments? AJ has reported the war in a rather balanced fashion, and many people think Obama has the best foreign policy outlook. Same for Jimmy Carter - engagement works best. How does the peace movement "win" and the war resume? Why would this be a Vietnam II plan? I'm just asking for more explanation.
Cut the insane, "feel good" schlock.Reason, negotiation, "engagement" works in the tiny portion of times when reason is
possible. Carter was/is a daydreaming fool that in the name of "peace" has caused more
violence and death than anyone. He forced the Shah to be "reasonable" and allow the peoples choice Khomeinei to lead. There hasnt been another free election in Iran for 30 years. Same goes for his "engagement" with Arafat, the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan,
ehunter: Don't know where I've said anything about "feel good." You apparently don't believe in military science or good police work, in which the motivations, views and plans of your opponent need to be explored. Instead, you're mired in old thinking rooted in a "carrots and sticks" approach. We're not interested in the old stuff; read Petraeus' 28 articles of his new counterinsurgency manual for the emerging paradigm. It helps to have an open mind.
I cant understand why the United States, China and Russia would oppose banning these weapons, the 3 are by far the most powerful nations on earth, they hardly seem necessary.
What use where the 4 million Israel dropped on south Lebanon.
It's easy, it's called the might is right philosophy. If you're a small country you're all peace and love but when you become big you believing in rightfully using that power to further your ends. But of course to the uneducated, you present a happy smile and useless rhetoric. You create a secret police or agency to run your campaigns of subversion, away from the prying eyes of educated citizen or inquiring reporters. Only when humanity grows out of this petty adolescence will we be worthy.
Thats not entirely true,Ireland as a small nation had its fair share of voilence and war with the different paramilitary groups, same with hundreds of places. But i see your point.
colm: As to Ireland, I think it is violence of a different sort. That is, a situation where home rule (instead of Brit rule) was the goal, so you end up having terrorism being used to achieve a level of autonomy. It's not like Ireland was threatening to other countries besides England in the region (as far as I know).
renegen: what is needed is some sort of people's "union" that is worldwide and undercuts the "separation" between sovereign nations. the children of lebanon, along with other ordinary people, are the ones who suffer from those bombs lying around.

I'm sorry you're so insecure. For that matter none of the European countries or Japan was ever mentioned, but you don't see anyone decrying that do you.
? say what? who's holding the olympics in 2 months and is dealing with a major humanitarean crisis? my argument is that by excluding China this story is less news worthy. mentioning the rest of the world without including china is an error in reporting on global affairs.
anthony: It is aljazeera ENGLISH, so the idea is to bring relevant news to those who speak English. So what if China also opposes the ban? What real diff would it make - we're supposed to do what China does? If China opposes the ban, does it make it more okay that we also oppose it? I don't think so.
If China veto'd ~ we'd know they condone the usage, but are hesitant to take a stance with the pending olympics - avoiding all issues with humanitarean connotations. I just believe that with China on the verge of dominating every major industry in the world, the media has to put them under the magnifying spotlight now, rather than later.
There is a major risk of social marginalisation on a global scale due to lack of information in the near future.
"If China veto'd ~ we'd know they condone the usage, but are hesitant to take a stance with the pending olympics - avoiding all issues with humanitarean connotations."
What bullcrap, if China vetoed they'd be no better than the United States. Might is right. And given their appalling human right record, I expect absolutely nothing from China on such a humanitarian issue. And why would they be afraid to take a stand on MASS MURDER CLUSTER BOMBS before the Olympics of all things, bullcrap again.
anthony: If you wish to be a policy analyst, then read what thinktankers out of georgetown, lbj school of public affairs, and others are saying about china's expansionism, stance on cluster bombs or other concerns, and the olympics as an attention-getting event. Your disengenuous approach to deflecting criticism of U.S. policy is embarrassing to other Americans. Please stop immediately.
I'm not american, and i'm definitely not Pro-American and Pro-Bush. I'm not kidding ~ China is such a different part of the world if ppl do not learn enough now about China now, the possibility of extensive marginalisation is huge.
