I'd like to know why they call it a dual mass flywheel. In my opinion it should be called a dampened flywheel, and I think it's a piece of expensive shit from this mechanic's point of view.
@505197 Agree, if somebody wants smooth driving, just buy a car with an automatic gear box, but the further people go, the more crap is invented just to make the repair cost bigger and harder to do. Sometimes it's crucial to find the right solution so that it would be comfortable and easy and cheap to maintain.
Dual mass flywheels are necessary in powerful four cylinder diesels to damp out the massive pressure rises or "pulses" as the engine turns. This prolongs transmission life, and makes the car infinitely more pleasurable to drive. I drove a VW PD once which had had a single mass flywheel conversion. It was awful. Loads of vibes through the car when accelerating that set your fillings on edge.
when I f***ed up the flywheel and the cluch in 2003 renault laguna 1.9 dci the gearbox didn't suffer, and fixing it wasn't that expensive about 900 zł = 225 euro (for the flywheel only)(fixing not replacing.)
the shifter is supposed to vibrate, so why make it stop? its connected to a transmission with a million moving parts! Also if it's vibrating, chances are you know coz you hold it... which you don't hold a shifter in a manual car, you'll put stress on the synchro and can even pop out of gear
my Xterra had a clutch go out of balance at 130K and it all went down from there. 2500 bucks, new clutch, diff ring, and flywheel. its all good though because now it only has like 30K on the new clutch!!!!
This is a misdiagnosis, the gear-stick behaves like this when the engine/gearbox mountings are worn or loose. When you put your foot on the gas, the torque-twist
stops the wobble. Prolonged use, like this, can cause internal drive-train damage.
Got replaced that DMF on my A4 TdI some weeks ago as well. Poor quality, it's just not the same thing as from 10 yrs ago when they knew how to build good cars.
vw trim levels are hard to understand, that car obviously is trimmed in wood which on other cars would be reserved for high spec cars, but here we see 5 blank buttons round the gearstick, is everything and option with vw cant they deal with blank buttons better, its the one thing i notice most about vw cars
@peugeotCitroen2CV i have a passat highline.. top trim in europe .. things missing are sunroof with a solar panel, rear seat heating... some minor things, i have only 2 buttons there (esp and parking sensors) , i know one is reserved for auto hold for automatic gearboxes, one for tire pressure monitoring (might be standard on newer year models) one for adaptive chassis which is a extra you can pay for but probably almost no regular body passat has, one probably for automatic back window curtain
I work in a motor factors and the VW Passat 1997-present and the MkIV Golf are without a shadow of doubt the most over rated bags of shite on the road today.
VW built is reputation of well built cars when thay were making simple cars with simple components.
Now they fill them with mass produced electronic and mechanical components that are failing left, right and centre.
Don't add crappy Diesel Tuning boxes then! It sounds like a diesel. I prefer a quiet and smooth car with no vibration. Millions of pounds goes in to research and cars are tested before release. Some do have problems due to faulty components, but they are fixed. Others are destroyed by stupid careless customers who tamper with them and operate them outside the manufacturers tolerance levels. I think I know which one applies to you!!!!
The dmf shouldnt cause vibration in the shifter, possibly due to worn parts inside the box and possible engine mount worn and are you sure it was the dmf that failed and not the rivets on the diff inside the gearbox, because when that fails it blows the belhousing to bits, and covers the clutch with oil.
I don't like DMFs because they take the feeling away from the clutch pedal - it's harder to pull away "by touch" as with a regular flywheel, not to mention all the reliability problems associated with them. They isolate the driver from the mechanical process.
i don't know ... actually i like the feeling it gives ... atleast on a diesel engine... it seems artificial but clutch is very smooth, also the pedal work area is long so the pull-away is easily manageable for any speed or higher gear starts when in traffic etc.
dual mass flywheels are there to lessen vibrations - its sad that people want cars that are completely quite and free of vibration - thats like asking for a horse to run smoothly!! LOL - all that engineering money spent to make a car quiet and not a dime spent to make them lighter - sad :((
@pajo1982 the sound is a matter of opinion, I personally like my truck loud, my wife prefers her car quiet......so I have a loud Diesel and she has a quiet little Jetta.

That no dual mas flywheel, cause when you accelerat is not moving. That gearbok and engine mounts.

@jimbutler1950 The shifter shouldn't shake at all with cable linkages.

thought about it... my friend drives a '00 A4 1.9tdi, after 300'000km he still has the first clutch which is working properly.

I completely disagree with you. Quiet & smooth cars are a pleasure to be in - that's why there's a market for them - that's why they exist.
Also there is huge effort by engineers put into making cars lighter!

DMF Dual Mass Flywheel
Anacinc 2 years ago
DMF is dual mass flywheel, which basically is flywheel made up of two pieces dampening the initial bight as drive is transmitted.
