wow really nice birds we just got our female harris 1year and our male red-tail 3 months, and also a barn owl from 11 weeks, the barn owl flies very well now but the harris we have her for 4 months i think is way to stubborn and is aggresive against women how can we change this?
Goshawks are not for everyone. But just like anything if you focus on all kinds of things you will master none of them. The best shortwingers are who they are because thats all they do. I hunt with a Harris hawk guy and it is okay but the gos is a finely tuned predator. Nothing like them. But many people do not have what it takes to succeed with them.
I can't really afford to build a mews to start falconry yet (I'm 14), but I might soon. Once I get my general license at 18, I plan on perhaps releasing my red-tail. But, would you recommend a Harris' or a Goshawk. There are a lot of ducks by the lake I live on, and a goshawk would be perfect up here, but I've heard so many good things about Harris' hawks and how easily trained they are. Any tips?
Harris Hawks are easier to train and are known to be the best for hunting rabbits. Goshawks are known to be way faster making them hunt from the first easier. The thing about Goshawks is that they can die easier, so if you get a Goshawk, you have to prepare if your hawk dies, most falconers I know quit falconry after their Goshawk died. As for Duck hunting go with a Goshawk. If you can work at the flaws of having a Goshawk which is training and taking care of them more, go with Goshawks then.
Harris Hawks cost a little bit more but it's more uncommon for them to die. They easier to train than almost all birds, and are good hunters. They will also be very uncommon to fly away from you. If a Goshawk sees something very far away it would go after it, making it going out of your sight very fast. Goshawks are a big step up from a Red-tailed Hawk, Harris Hawks seem way more easy after you become a General. So if you think you can handle a, Goshawk do it. But I recommend a Harris Hawk.
I loved going out with my buddy (a master falconer) when he flew his pair of Harris hawks. I couldn't believe how well they worked the jack rabbits or cottontails. I never did get to see him fly his falcon.

Thanks man! I'll probably get a Harris. I've heard stories of how easily and well they are trained and manned.

claytonm333 3 years ago
If you are in the USA then you cannot buy a hawk, you need to trap it with a falconry license (major fines, otherwise)

don't watch clips on hunting if you dislike it.
It seems a little stupid to watch something you 'hate' so much you feel moved enough to post a comment. stupid.
