I wonder if it has to do with dog's perception of color, it's probably the case it has no perception of depth with that color of carpet, if there was a clue like red trim down the stairs, it would give the dog a clue about the orientation of the stairs and thus overcome their fear..

@Lzibbah I understand where you are coming from, but this was playtime with him. You can't just keep the toy from him. He is by far the smartest dog I have ever had, and he learned commands extremely fast.

Just as long as you're aware that by playing with him when he barks, you're teaching him to be very loud. I know nonstop barking at playtime drives me nuts, so I put toys away when dogs are loud, and when they're quiet we start playing again : )

@Lzibbah Well being that he is over 4 years old now, he knows the difference between play time and nuisance barking. He is completely in understanding of not being the alpha male and plays the same with me as he would with anyone else. You ask him to drop a toy mid tug, and he drops it immediately and will wait for it. Sometimes, I really don't care if he barks like crazy when we are playing, sure he is having fun!
