Your cat is in a state of REM sleep..the cat is dreaming but that doesn't necessarily include nightmares. All living creatures twitch during REM sleep. Even humans. Look for videos on youtube for babies twitching during sleep as well as hamsters.
what the hell?! that looks like my cat!! and she does that too, sometimes you can see her move her paw as if she's catching something, then her head goes forward as if she eats it. it's really cute
I'm guessing cats do this because they get into REM sleep and the chemical required to keep their body immobile has yet to take full effect. I could be wrong.
I can tell when mine is having a nightmare or wakes up from a nightmare because he has a different type of meow and it's his "hey, hey, I'm glad you're here" type meow. He meows about 6 times and comes and sits on me.
That's just the rem part of sleep (when someone is dreaming). It's hard to tell if they're good dreams or bad dreams, tho, but I'm pretty sure they're not nightmares. My cat once had a really freaky nightmare, started to shake violently in his sleep, then suddenly woke up, hissed and ran the hell away.
its ok, cats have dreams too. not neccecessarily nightmares. all of the cats I had used to talk, growl, chew, suck and make biscuits asleep:):) =^. .^=
My two-year old male Abby must have come from a horrible breeder. He is so skiddish that when you try to pet his head he ducks and scurries. Lately, he comes out of a deep sleep with his tail flred and eyes totally dilated and creeps around staring at his bed as if there is something in it, he approaches slowly and reaches out at the bed. We can't approach him for a while. He steps back and just stares at something we can't find. Any answer would be appreciated
They do dream like us and many other animals, but I'm not sure they could distinguish a good dream from a bad one, we also have these reflexes while assleep, ones more than others, in extreme cases, people "live" what they are dreaming (noctivagus).P.S. not sure noctivagus is the right term, those people that walk while sleeping and act like they were awake.
I think it's called somnaambluancism. it's a parasomnia disorder. I'm not sure and I am not sure of the spelling either, lol but I think that is the term you were looking for.
My cat does that too. But last night he seriously flipped out. He jumped up in the air and spun his legs and hit his head on the wall, then when he looked around he got terrified of the bed!
my cat does that sometimes but its mostly my saint bernard (Dont worry the cat and the st.bernard dont mess with each other) but the st.bernard constantly runs in her sleep
Kittehs have dreams just like people do. From the twitches they make, we can tell they have dreams about chasing things, catching things, and eating things. If you touch them, they'll sometimes run away in their dream. If you touch their mouth, which I highly recommend, they sometimes smack or make eating motions. I love kittehs!
A neighbor of mine grabbed our cat and took him to the pound (even though he was in OUR yard... long story), and when I brought him back, every time he slept he growled and woke up with a jerk after his whiskers twitched, and if I tried to pet him to calm him down he would jump up and run away real quick before realizing it was me. He probably had nightmares about being in a pound with dogs.
Oh, yeah, my cats twitch all the time in their sleep. Sometimes their paws twitch because their chasing something in their dream. Sometimes their ears because they hear something. Cats have dreams too, but that didn't really look like a nightmare right there.
I've always wondered what cats dream ABOUT. Dogs chasing them? Somebody ringing the doorbell? Our Persian DEFinitely dreams of our black cat pouncing on her (the little booger.) She wakes up suddenly, meowing loudly. Then, she goes back to sleep. What a rough life.
the first time i saw my cat doing that it was completely limp and not moving so i was like OMG its ded. But then it started twitching and i was like wtf. Try playing with its paws when its like that. When my cat falls asleep i love arranging her paws in a diferent position then how she went to sleep and when she wakes up she always looks so confused.
I believe animals have the same sleep patterns as we do. What you saw there is REM which is the dream phase. I've never seen my cat do it but my dog doesn't it all the time as well as whimpering and barking in his sleep.

my cats do this all the time..i think it happens when they're in deep sleep
they move a lot and sometimes they meow or growl
i don't think it's always nightmares, it's like us with the eye movement phase, during REM, it's body reflexes
