As i understand it the danger of young rattlers is that they do not know how to control their vaeom where as larger ratlers will strike and often not release any venom using the strike just as a tactic to scare a larger predator away. I have seen lots of juvie rattler strikes and i will admit that compared to a larger rattler they do spray quite a lot more than you would think.
@RHO1953, The small rattle snakes are more dangoures then the big ones because the little ones can't control the release of venom, but that is a beautiful snake,
@sammy40191 You know ive heard that a million of times but ive never seen any documented proof of it. And the lethality is all based on how much venom is pumped in. considering a juvie EDB is around 12 inches and an adult is easily over 8ft, it would be safe to say an adult could dump more venom in one bite than a juvie has all together and still have enough venom to comfortably continue its day.
Yeah, whatever. Mostly they keep to themselves, but that isn't universal. At the very least that snake should be taken to a remote area. It is so big that a bite would almost certainly result in an amputation or death.
What a magnificent snake! I watched one cross my path back in the 70s while I was out in a horse pasture in Florida. It was starting to see one so huge! Now, I live in Western North Carolina on, you guessed it... Rattlesnake Mountain. And yes, they are up here and keep to themselves. We have a wonderfully healthy ecosystem here and all the wild things are healthy, including the snakes. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool - I would never kill any snake unless it became absolutely necessary, snakes are beautiful creatures well deserving to live a natural and healthy life. The largest rattlesnake I've ever come across measured 15 feet - I swear this is completely true, my sister saw an ever larger rattlesnake in the same vicinity that supposedly measured 25 feet in length, the creature spanned the entire distance of a typical country roadway from one side of the road all of the way to the other side +.
@Stephenz4x4 Well if you kill it and it isn't around to eat the rodents anymore guess what happens, the rodents start multiplying and destroying crops and carring diseases that spread to humans. These snakes are in our ecosystem for a reason.
They remove them from Navy housing on a daily basis in San Diego. You are one of those fruitcakes, aren't you? You would rather a kid die than a rattlesnake. Nuts.
@RHO1953 You should teach the children how to look where they are going. I know "kids will be kids" but I grew up around these animals in the wild playing in the woods. If your kids aren't smart enough to respect the animals natural habitat and be careful of where they are stepping, then maybe we are just weeding out the week genes that shouldn't be on this planet propigating to begin with.
Yes, rattlesnakes are def. around Mt. Tamalpais in Marin Co.. They tend to like the sagebrush areas, and in summer you would find them there or in the shade. So...keep your eyes open and NEVER reach into a crevice or behind a log during May through October. N. Pacifics do not always rattle; they are rather passive like that, but you do not want to get hit with a defensive strike by one of them.
Jeez, don't get your panties twisted into a knot. The term "monster" was a reference to its size. No, it can easily bite if you just wander too close accidentally. I know a bit about this topic. That snake isn't your average ankle biter. He could get you much higher on your leg and you would probably lose the leg and maybe die.
Hmm. Just imagine some kid runs across it and gets bit. Would it be quite as beautiful to you then? That snake is a monster. A bite could very well be fatal.
I counted 11 rattles and a button. My dad killed a black rattler once that had 16 rattles and a button. These are some very nasty dudes, the one in this vid seemed complacent, but that can change instantly. A bite from this guy could very will kill a full grown adult.
Have you ever heard of antivenom? Plus rattlers only release venom in 1 in 5 bites, and they often just threaten. So, if you wanna kill it for a child's safety, NEVER LEAVE TEXAS!
@misfit58 That is not an accurate way to determine the age of a rattlesnake. Rattles fall of from wear and tear, and every time the snake sheds a new rattle is added. They shed several times per year.
@misfitt58 A button is added to the rattle after every shed, not every year. And while this one's rattle appears to be in pristine condition, the average snake rattle may be damaged or broken, making it nigh unto impossible to accurately judge the snake's age. But yes, this big boy is probably quite old for a rattler.
@m1shadow There's no need to run or to be scared. Snakes are highly misunderstood, and generally don't want to mess with anything bigger than it is, they don't attack and are beautiful, graceful, intelligent animals. Killing snakes that are not threatening to a person is a sign of weakness and/or lack of intelligence. To see a rattler non-coiled like here is a mezmerizing experience! Thanks for filming & posting this awesome video of such a wonderful animal. Oh, it's "venomous," NOT "poisonous."
I counted 14 links to the rattle. That is one of the oldest I have ever seen. That is a beautiful snake. Here in Az they are everywhere but 9 is the oldest I've seen before.
@oxman0313 Actually, I am pretty sure that counting rattle links is a myth for determining age. While it is true that they gain a new rattle link after each shed, they are also capable of losing rattle links.
Sorry, but all that clicking I was hoping you were getting the shot gun ready!!snakes are pitiful creatures, they have to go long periods without eating until their next meal. Then if someone got bit they would be hated even more..so do your part and help wipe out a snake today. this is a public service message from the "we hate snakes foundation".

@shawnluzier actually, im not a huge fan of snakes... well i'm mostly just afraid of getting bit by a poisonous snake... if they weren't poisonous, i wouldn't be as scared...
Rattlers are usually venomous. :) I love snakes, but if I find a rattler in a populated area, I have to balance the scales of loving animals vs someone getting bit. I'll have to kill the guy if I can't relocate him to an unpopulated area. Hate to do it, but it is me vs. him in that specific situation. Unless I can call animal control in time before he bites someone :)
@ryanerb Well then you shouldn't be scared because they aren't poisonous. They are venomous. A poison is usually ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin while a venom is injected. Some snakes may be venomous but they are not poisonous. Just a quick point of clarification.
