  • I watched Billy record "You are so..." with Joe C. - the ultimate Ray devotee - and he was just coming back then, or trying to (they both were).  also saw Billy playing with Clapton, twice, and was truly artistry.

    I did not criticize Mrs. Raitt. I just stated a fact: Schmaltz will always be Schmaltz. It is like Barry Manilow with a Fender Stratocaster.

    If people like that it is perfectly o.k. for me.

  • That's true. He was handpicked by Ray early on to be his organist. Billy was just the man. Everyone who heard him play felt something unique and special about him.

    On a related note, vocally speaking, Ray Charles said that his only true protege was Joe Cocker.

  • It's not really a story. It's something that's written in one of the essays inside the Joe Cocker box set. It's about the style and feel of the singing that's being talked about. In all these years, no one has really been able emulate (not imitate) the way Ray Charles sings. Ray's vocals are very loose, raspy, and soulful. He kind of takes any song (country, rock, pop) and can turn it into this bluesy, raw song. Who else has genuinely been able to do that?

  • Oh ppl mixed up what was shown on giant screen and what took place in actual performance. Thanks for this video. Though this is a great performance from Bonnie and Billy I expected a full fledged solo on hammond by Billy. I was looking for one for years. I have only found the "How great thou art" video on youtube. I hope to find more.

The guy playing the organ, or the girl playing the slide guitar? Oh, you mean the deceased person on the video that they overdubbed on the live performance. Yes, you are right, this should be titled as a Ray Charles performance instead.
