the wizard is the greatest defensive short stop ever to play the game. you had to earn a gold glove back then. now in the modern era you just have to be a good hitter and it seems you automatically get one.
Jeter is good no doubt, but I saw Ozzie do it on a day in day out basis NO one even comes close to what he did. The best defensive shortstop ever, the greatest shortstop ever. Whitey Herzog once said he saves a hundred runs a year .

He was the first to make the fantastic plays. Notice how quick he got rid of the ball. Consistancy is 13 gold gloves.

You know that you can't look at stats and see whose a better fielder. Stats can't factor in range or difficulty. It may suggest that he's a more solid shortstop, but that doesn't suggest that he can make better plays, especially in the crunch.
And Smith played at a position that is only like a thousand times more demanding. Mays was primarly a center fielder, Ozzie was a shortstop. That is like comparing apples to a plank of wood.
And I would love for anyone to try and prove that there was a better defensive shortstop than Ozzie Smith.

If you listened to the video, Ozzie said, "he did not have a strong arm". He worked harder than all others and he knew his weaknesses and found a way to overcome them. He was the first to make the fantastic plays. Notice how quick he got rid of the ball. Honus set the bar, but it took Ozzie to raise it for players like Omar and Jeter who too can make the spectacular play. Ozzies job was to save runs, his offense was a bonus. Consistancy is 13 gold gloves.

He was without a doubt one of the greatest. It is impossible to say just how great he was compared to other players. We have highlight clips to watch the common era players. Traditionally, shortstops were compared to the amazing defensive ability of Honus Wagner.. arguably the best of all time.

man i live in louisville ky now....since i was like 10 or so. but i grew up in st. louis. and I went to the original busch stadium religiously with my dad. When ozzie hit the field..THUNDER ERUPTED and everyone chanted "OZZIE.......OZZIE......OZZIE." it was epic. He was the perfect player of the game. The epitomy of baseball, the great american sport. Baseball is ruined now, but im glad i got to witness one of the greatest.....hats off!

For the fans to respect and admire a player so much means he put in maximum effort on and off the field in his time here. You all might not pay attention but i think cooperstown does when we give a standing ovation to a player on an opposing when they make a good play regardless our own team's outcome, or the fact the heat index was 110 today and it was a sold out 1:15 start 46,000 people on a thursday in july, or the fact in some stadiums cards fans outnumber the home team fans.

I like to think the fact that he played in st louis for most of his career carries some weight when it comes to the hof argument. remember we have been playing organized baseball in one form or another since 1882. Hell we had 2 teams in 1902 with a population around 600,000. Chicago didn't get two teams until 1904 with a population around 2,000,000. Any sports writer or manager, former or current can attest to how knowledgeable and respectful STL baseball fans are regarding the game.

I agree, but Ozzie came from Compton, not that barn. Anyone on here that thinks the Hall of Fame is like any other sport is a baseball idiot. Only about 180 players in the history of the game. Take out managers, GM's, etc. First year voted in, way less. Ozzie Smith is without a doubt, the best defense player to play the position. A percent off on base percentage than Vizquel. Some years, 1-2 error's on the whole season? You missed a great player if your ragging on The Wizard.

I would take Jeter over Ozzie anyday. Jeter has a batting average well over 300, he can hit for power and average, he already has almost 3000 hits. Ozzie Smith barely has over 2000 career hits, his batting average is a atrocious 260.

He's in the HOF, because he is the best defensive SS to have ever played the game. And, keep in mind offense wasn't expected from a SS in that era (Cal Jr. changed that). Roll the DP, sac bunt/fly, draw a BB, steal a base, look that up and you might change your mind. The fielding we all know (which is enough!) but what he did at the plate that never showed up in the box scores. Well, I leave that to you mawyrob.

Why is he in the Hall???? I know he may have been the best fielding SS, but it's the Hall of Fame! Alot of players were just great at fielding. I'm sorry, but a guy that batted .262, 28 HR's, and only 793 RBI does NOT deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.

Baseball is like church, may attend, few understand. In addition, your stats are even wrong. In the World Series 3 out of 5 years? Smith stats increased consistently through his career, became a near 300 hitter, before, only known for defense. How many runs did he take away from the other team? Steals? Sacrifice bunts? and on and on.....learn the game, then you can appreciate a player like Smith, a club house leader. Different game now, Omar Visquel great, but not Ozzie Smith

Tony LaRussa came, said the best shortstop in spring plays. Smith played better, had 2-3 years. LaRussa still stiffed him, "Steroid Tony", never tells the press about the 1st wife and two girls he walked out on 30 years ago, thats why the movie Hot August Nights got canned. The Baseball Hall is elite, don't argue.

You know that you can't look at stats and see whose a better fielder. Stats can't factor in range or difficulty. It may suggest that he's a more solid shortstop, but that doesn't suggest that he can make better plays, especially in the crunch.

And Smith played at a position that is only like a thousand times more demanding. Mays was primarly a center fielder, Ozzie was a shortstop. That is like comparing apples to a plank of wood.

Derek Jeter has 10 fewer Gold Gloves then Ozzie Smith. And this is while being like two fielding runs above averaage. He didn't deserve any of them, and Gold Gloves are bad indicators of defense anyways.

Defense shouldn't get you in the Hall of Fame? Seriously? Defense is one of the most important parts of the game, and he saved his team COUNTLESS runs, and won COUNTLESS ballgames with his absolutely superb defense.
A .262 hitter with 26 home runs should be when he's 250 fielding runs above average (at the second most demanding position in baseball).

Fact of the matter is that, despite that .262 batting average, he did have almost 2,500 hits, in addition to him being the greatest defensive player of all-time.

Defense is one of the most crucial parts of the game.
I'll say this again. He wasn't just a fielder. He saved his teams dozens of wins because of all the runs he saved. It's amazing to me that you are trying to argue against Ozzie Smith for the Hall of Fame because he was a subpar offensive player. I just don't get it.

@EricAnno I wouldnt say he was subpar. He had some good seasons. Broke 300 a couple times, IIRC. Not a power hitter at all tho. I seem to remember something about his batting coach dieing, and Oz's batting kinda plateaued. Ozzie got on base plenty, and more than made up for his mediocre batting avg, with his fielding.
