What is the point of doing this? Anxious to get dust on the sensor or mirror? What's next, take the valve cover off your engine to let sand into your engine block? Put your dad's camera away, or he will take away your Nintendo.
ive got a question, i attached my old AI lens to the d40, switched it to manual and tried to adjust shutter speed. it wont work, what should i do? how did you get your shutter speed to vary without a lens??
This guy videotaped doing something with his camera that other people are curious about, which is more good use than most cameras ever get put to.
That D40 body will be obsolete before dust becomes a problem. And even if he smashed it today, a Nikon USA refurb can be had (complete with 1-yr warranty and all accessories, in like new condition) for under $300 shipped.
fifficus, Thanks for showing me what the working parts look like. Much like these guys, I'm too chicken to see for myself.
Does it take video?

This shutter sounds very rough. Mechanical shutter have a very sweet sound, in my opinion. I like the sound of an Olympus OM1.

Using an Ai-S should be no problem in M-Mode. You can adjust shutter and aperture manually. Using Auto mode won't work.
"how did you get your shutter speed to vary without a lens??"
Just use the body without a lens and switch to M-Mode.
