  • shes sexy and can perform *

  • I love that Phyllis had a style of her own but she really worked hard to understate her beauty as she got older.

  • 0:05 - Damn, that's a big TV! Times have changed!

  • BRING BACK DONNIE SIMPSON!!!!!!!!!

  • Great vintage video, and nice quality for '91!

  • I always knew she was beautiful and talented but I never knew how personable and funny she was. She was really a hoot! Its just so sad she became so depressed that she ended her own life. Im just glad Im old enough to have had opportunity to enjoy her work. The kids these days are really missing out because there are few real singers being played on popular radio.

  • R.I.P. Phyllis Hyman..Beautiful Voice

  • you can't buy class like this....

  • Gorgeous woman and voice, I'm a 49 year old white dude but I loved her, wish she was still here. I fell in love with her when I was 18 and she released "You Know How to Love me"

  • i remember this episode when she was on here. to bad she died from lonliness. beauty can be a curse as well as a gift.

  • @famousfuture" beauty can be a curse as well as a gift"...Very true.

  • @rtisleo having it then losing it due to age and weight?

  • Ugh! ..I love her ...she just omg ..PERFECT!

  • I miss Video Soul. It was really a great show where black artists could be interviewed at length. Hyman was amazing.

  • love the shout out to Patti LaBelle...i love that my two favorite singers patti and phyllis had such love for each other!!

  • She was Georgous!!!! Its so sad to watch this...

  • I'm so happy to have experience what a real entertainter is. I love being a child of the early 70s and 80s.

  • This was when BET was BET man. None of that booty shaking craziness. Clean stuff and postive vibes. Even the Gospel Celebration on BET back then wasn't as out there as it is now. What happened? Donnie was the man too. These are classic interviews and Phyllis was absolutely beautiful. I remember the day she died like it was yesterday. It was a shock to the whole world. Beautiful lady she was.

  • i wish she didnt commit suicide she was so talented

  • One of the best interviews on Video Soul... ever. She is one beautiful, tall, sophisticated lady with style.

  • rip ms. hyman

  • such a beautiful lady! wish i had a persona like hers!!!!

  • Brother Saleed missed on "Don't Want Change the World" video or maybe videos have evolved into a much higher art form.

  • She was so funny. I always thought she would have been great as Sinclaire's mother on LIVING SINGLE.

  • @adelgado75 LOL she wasn't that old.. if I'm not mistaken her and Kim coles are around the same age range

  • Bless their hearts. Many of the young talent today can't hold their in interviews. However, their are exceptions. Chrisette Michele, Jill Scott, IndieArie and Ledisi come to mind. They reflect that there is intellect as well as musical talent.

Phyllis used excellent grammar and diction in her interviews as well as in her song styling. Rare.

  • what's the name the song at around 5:15, something along the lines of "i can't take it anymore"? please and thank you!

  • @sugaresplosion Yes, that's the name of it!

  • @retrorhythms perchance that you might upload that song? i can't find it anywhere :(

  • @sugaresplosion It's on Amazon. You can download it there for 99 cents, and they also have the rest of the album, as well.

  • Wow! will forever miss her! Thx for posting!

  • this makes me think, after al the acalades and support of being the best suicide is when you feel alone people are so alone and thats why we have to love on another

  • Now I am not speaking vocally wise, but I declare Jasmine Sullivan looks just like Phyllis to me! Especially here.

  • omg finally someone besides me see that..

  • Phyllis I can't even say how much you have always meant to me personally as an idol of mine, but she was so much more then just a "Singer's Singer" she was a real lady with real issues that left her living in pain and I give Phyllis so much credit this is not a comment from the "Pitty Party Review" LOL I miss her and I know the void that has been left in the music industry since June 30, 1995 when she left us I pray for her everyday I know she is with God & we'll all see her again RIP diva!

  • She's one of those "once in a lifetime" voices that slipped between the cracks before the world really figured out who she was. And its such a shame, because when they say voices like hers only come around once, they were talking about voices like Hyman's. When I listen to her sing, "Meet Me On the Moon", I cant move...the beauty of that song just paralyzes me in a good way. And it sounds so much like a farewell song, its scarey. The Great Nancy Wilson said that Phyllis was her favorite singer.

  • what happend to the volume.

  • Video Soul + Phyliss Hyman= amazing

  • @DaBullA215 Phyllis. She would have corrected you on that spelling of her name. Trust me.

  • I loved her so much!

  • she looks so classy....whatever if she gain weight..she was a fantastic singer!

  • wow i love how she was tryna be nice talkin bout "people who sing" and sell records vs divas like her...im sure she would cringe at the chicks on radio now lol but her diva status is unquestionable

    ...thanx 4 posting retrorhythms

  • The Best Female Vocalist in The World .......Bar None!!!!!!!!

  • @TONIO2K8 YAsss tell it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WoW! this interview was so telling about BET then and BET now!

  • Thanks Shy for passing it on and thanks Retro rhythms for posting. Oh this was absolutely fabulous and yes, a wonderful early Xmas gift.

Did PH look fabulous or what. She was working the whole ensemble. And tried her best to be nice.

  • OMG This is the beft gift that i COULD ASK FOR BEFORE cHRISTMAS WE HAVE PRAYED FOR YEARS that someone would post this rare gem thank you so so much!

  • Phyllis Hyman is one of THE best singers of all time and I seriously think that people don't give her enough credit or recognition! She was one of those singers that anyone could relate to because people could feel the pain that she belted out in her songs! RIP Phyllis.

  • Thanks for posting, Rhythms this is a great find here on YouTube. If memory serves me correctly, Patti Labelle makes an appearence during this interview, right? I'm so glad that someone has an interest in Phyllis's music. I hope you post part 2 of the interview soon.

  • It was the same episode. I'll have to check and see if the two of them were on simultaneously later in the show. I have posted part two now!

  • They were on together for a few seconds during Patti's segment.

  • Yes! I've been waiting on this one Justin. :0) Thanks so much for posting! Of course the interview (so far, cause their is a Part 2) is great! Phyllis personality is contagious, she was funny, honest, and just being Phyllis on this interview. Loves it! :0) Cant wait for Part 2!
