Love how Alfie almost snarls "...washed away his crime." Forty years have passed, and Valjean hasn't forgotten the injustice of being condemned for stealing to save a child's life. Now, to protect this child of his heart from being tarred with his "crime," Jean sentences himself to a hell of separation and loss. That really is a "...heart full of love." Alfie trembles with grief and pain here, and just breaks my heart, too.

I am so impressed with the way Alfie portrays Valjean's pain at disclosing his identity to Marius here, and also at losing Cosette not just to Marius, but forever. Even after a dozen viewings, I almost expect the emotional tension he's using to hold in his pain to snap, and to have him spilling his guts all over the place in a blubbering mess. Masterful manipulation - of my emotions, anyway.
