  • The transonic part comes after the slow part... i can beleive its going 260m/s from that

  • Yeah... transonic with the gear down. HAHA!

  • bara volante.. meglio che sia andato in pensione...

  • The louder the airplane, the sexier it is.

  • ....spettacolare.....

  • ....che nostalgia....era stupendo anche se ormai era superato

  • Missile with a man in it. Nothing beats the sound of "old smokey" GE J79s .

  • its not faster than sound. the video proves that. doesnt matter if ti has wings or not it didnt go faster than sound in the video.

  • Definition of TRANSONIC: being or relating to speeds near that of sound in air or about 741 miles (1185 kilometers) per hour at sea level and especially to speeds slightly below the speed of sound at which the speed of airflow varies from subsonic to supersonic at different points along the surface of a body in motion relative to the surrounding air.

    *some people will believe anything.

  • Sorry Bubba. One cannot go trans sonic in the F-104 with the gear down. Nice vid, though. Thanks for posting it.

  • @yakridersky Well, you can, but it's not going to turn out good lol.

  • lo sai cosa vuol dire transonico?

  • It's not transonic because the "sound" of the aircraft comes before of the aircraft. In transonic and axpecially in supersonic flight you will hear the aircraft after its passage.

  • Woah are you all fucking idiots?!?! The second pass is transonic (faster then mach1). If you'd actually watch the whole video and read the description you might save yourself from looking like total tools.

  • @viper8red Transonic: Subsonic flight velocity defined by localized super sonic flow regions attached to the airfoil upper surface. Typical flight velocities of M .88-.99. "...you might save yourself from looking like total tools."

    Best Regards,

    An Aerospace Engineer.

  • @irunthistown1000 Oh boy, now your trying to go to critical measurements of speed of airflow over an airfoil in order to prove your case. That's not desperate! You fail! Now STFU. This is not a transonic flyby, give it a rest.

  • certainly has its gear down, but can't be transonic as at such speeds (almost the speed of sound, at least 1000km/h) the landing gear would be ripped off the plane due to drag.

  • do the italians actually still use starfighters???

  • @SPAZANATA

purtroppo no,prima era operativo fino al 2004.

ma lo usavano per divertirsi e per la nostra e la loro goduria.

  • I was there.......a great flight and a skilled pilot: ten.col.Bruno Strozza, commander of 10° - 9° Stormo

  • So, what would one of these planes do if we could put one of those new Pratt & Whitney F135. 43,000 lbs. of max thrust!!! I want starfighters. The raptor and lightning II just don't have the elegance of this airplane.

  • ITS SUB-SONIC HE HAD HIS GEAR DOWN!

  • Nice!!

  • 21sparrow7 that plane is an f-104 starfighter , it's an old american jetfighter.Don't talk about european jets anymore ....

  • Comment removed

  • Look up a Rafale or a Gripen. Or the Harrier, for that matter, which was actually manufacted, designed, and researched entirely by Great Britain, and simply bought by America. Research before you make ignorant generalizations, my friend.

  • You idiot ! The F 104 was American designed and built.

  • The F-104 had a top speed of 1,328 mph which is over Mach 2. Plus it was an American built fighter first flown in 1954 entered service in 1958.

  • hahahahahaha!!!Dummie!!

    Get some more aircraft´s information...

  • the f-104 is american, the f-104 will out climb, out run and out maneuver anything the US has today. Mach 2, still holding the time to climb record for 40,000ft. Not bad for 1950's technology I would say.

  • out climb and out run? most definitely... it didn't earn it's reputation as the "missile with a man in it" by being slow, lol. but it had a turn radius the size of texas. speed was what designer kelly johnson wanted, and that's what he got. the f-104 was an intercepter, so maneuverability wasn't as big of a concern top speed and acceleration.

  • @Polybun- Uh...I don't know about all that! Maybe initial climb, possibly maximum speed, but definetly not maneuverability. The Starfighter makes a better rocket ship than some modern fighters, but as an all around combat plane, it is lacking.

  • Does anyone watch the whole fricken vid....... the second pass was transonic in climb

  • ...I remember them passing by, most of the time in pairs, sometimes alone and occasionally by 4 or even 6!

You could hear them coming from miles away and long after they have passed, the air was still filled with their sound...

This video sure brings back childhood memories, thanks for posting..

    ( know, Í'm getting old)

  • does the order go

    slowest

    1.transonic

    2. subsonic

    3.super sonic

    4.hyper sonic?

  • You have got 1 and 2 the wrong way round

  • Are you retarded, Sub means below, trans means transitional. He has them perfectly correct. Go back to high school and this time, pay attention you stupid fagot.

  • See 'saybya's comment and you will see who the retard is, may be you! should pay attention!!!

  • nope

    1. subsonic (anything below the speed of sound)

    2. transonic (just before speed of sound)

    3. supersonic

    4. hypersonic

  • this is one of my alltime favorite classic fighters, the sound it makes is music to my ears./

  • transsonic with gear down....ahahahahaha

     zzzZZZzzz

  • I dont think this is transsonic...

  • yeah lol, transonic with gear down and low attitude XD

  • Wow, you should watch the whole thing before you laugh at people. The SECOND pass was indeed much faster, without landing gear extended. Good job, your observational skills are extraordinary. XD

  • Burbank's best!

  • There is a great plane.

    In germany it was the"Witwenmacher"

But its still a great plane.

    One turbine

    one siluette

    one power

    one speed

    only great

    Sorry for my bad english

    Greeds Lion

  • Always been my favorite plane.

  • 0:26 ....beautiful sounding jet

  • Even approaching the speed of sound, the gear would be...so gone.

  • Not even close to transonic!

  • transonic is trough the sound barrier or? Sorry im a newb with planes.

  • ye, subsonic, then trans sonic, then supersonic, then hypersonic. hyper is 5x

  • Transonic refers to airflow around the aircraft. When you reach that situation where some airflow around the aircraft is supersonic (critical Mach number), but some local airflow around the aircraft is still subsonic. Once ALL airflow passing around the aircraft is supersonic, then you're out of the transonic regime and in supersonic flight. Yes, you can have over 1.0 on the AMI, and still be transonic (even though your TAS would come out to supersonic velocity).

  • @fbgd Yeah, that was pretty far from transonic.

  • Crazy how the wings can take that much pressure!!

  • The Starfighter! Bad ass plane!

  • maybe doing around 45mph at least but I,m no expert.

  • more around 100 mph

  • F-104? 100 mph? LOL!!!

  • @jasfromoz ok well its better then the guy who said it was 45 mph lol ya this pass is probly more like 300 then the second might be going 500 its hard to tell tho not really any referance points

  • @jasfromoz but amazing planes, my grandfather used to fly these ones

  • @jasfromoz That's for the pace car!

  • First off the Transonic reference is for the second flyby not the first you bunch of retards. Second, transonic is a region of speed, not a set speed. Since you don't know how fast it was going you can't say it wasn't transonic.

  • it is not a super sonic !!

  • transsonic with gear down?yeaaah loool

  • lol more like Subsonic

  • j79 engine?

  • yes

  • This specific model is the ferrari f104. Lockheed painted a f104 in ferrari red and put the prancing horse on the tail. This plane is located right now in the middle of the fiorano test track in maranello, italy

  • The F-104, the "missile with a man in it".

  • ya the 104's are loud but i think the cake goes to the B1-B those things are ridiculously loud

  • HELLZ YEAH!!!!! my grandparents work on a B1-B at Oklahomas Tinker AFB...i love watching them...they are beautiful and fast as hell...

  • thats slow

  • Videos can't do justice to how noisy this aircraft can be. Once, I was in a car while two F-104s were landing, some 100 meters away. The noise and vibration coming from the jets made me think the car was about to come apart!

  • it was been the most beautifull plane and built ahead of it's time.

  • transonic lmao say that agin slow

  • yeah..that is bull-shit.,.

  • the Starfighter was an absolute bitch to fly ... its nickname was the Widowmaker!!

  • and it did make lots of widows, nevertheless a pilot who could fly this craft could fly more or less anything. There is a video somewhere on YouTube showing nowadays expert pilots in a F104 flight simulator. You can hear the stall buzzer beep like crazy and the video ends with the pilot saying "I just can't make it fly". Flying an F22, for example, is definitely easy, since everything is computer assisted, but once the electronics fail it's like flying a brick, no way to keep it in the air...

  • The F-104 was certainly an aircraft meant to fly a certain way. Not too wide an envelope. I'd suckerpunch my grandmother to have one though, challenging as it might be to fly.

  • That wasnt low.

  • WTF???

210 kts is stall speed on a 104

  • lol manded missle

  • Translated in English

This Starfighter didn't fly at transonic speed: an aircraft surely can't fly in transonic regime with landing gear down, neither at a public air show where the sonic wave would make fall all the spectators and even we can clearly understand, watching the video, that the f-104 is flying at moderate speed

  • cool story brah

  • the F-104 was capable of 1,058mph

  • The first pass was with gear down. The second was gear up and much faster. Transonic doesn't mean supersonic. The very definition of the transonic regime is where there is shocked flow somewhere on the aircraft, but not over the entire aircraft (which would be true supersonic).

For something like the F-104, I suspect that it enters the transonic range at around M0.9, and that's certainly a reasonable speed for the second pass.

  • Thunderbird 3 on site over.

  • Wow, I guess transonic speed got lowered to about 115 knots. Tell me when your posting something not bull shit.

  • ROFL>Thats not low.

  • transonic with gear down huh? bullshit cough cough

  • Grattaculo guarda tutto il video prima di sparar cazzate!

  • si?

  • ariba taco

  • Love the sound of a 1950s screaming jet engine.

  • That exhaust trail is pretty conspicuous.

  • chem drops.

  • ....nothing 'transonic' about this vid.........

  • This jet is doing 250 kts in the first frame. The gear was down and retracting. The aircraft has to be in the IAS white arc to retract or extend the gear. Or else the gear will fail from excessive pitot pressure.

  • i looked it up...vlo (max velocity for landing gear extended) is only 260 knots for f-104's...no where near transonic speeds (speed of sound is around 650 knots i think, depending on temp)

  • the plane in the video is far from supersonic. The sound barrier is around 700 and 760 knots depending on height and air temperature as well as density.

  • what does transonic mean? I heard this word beofre..thanks

  • It means very close to breaking the sound barrier. say from 730-740 mph. However this vid is not showing a jet at transonic speeds. :)

  • Thank you for the info...very cool, I think I saw a plane do transonic at airshow in halifax ns,,,thanks..

  • Transonic is around .8 or .9 mach. It's a distinguished regime of flight because at those speeds, airflow over certain parts of the aircraft will be supersonic.

  • That is the very first transonic airplane I have seen that has forward sound projector technology! Amazing how it makes sound go faster than the speed of sound, so that one can hear it before it passes! I bet that's some sort of Italian defense technology!

  • Yeah! And it says that the gear was down!

Must be pretty strong gear to go transonic with all hanging down.

    Nice birds though.

  • sarcasm??

  • So many arguments on this site with mainly young who want to be what I was ,that I intend NEVER TO MAKE A COMMENT AGAIN,Its sad really. But thats the youth of the modern day world Goodbye get on with it,you will learn.

  • Wow, Fawjavelin. That looks like the beginning of some real English sentences. Clearly you imply you have superior knowledge. I pray you are not a teacher!

  • Oh and ronfake1 sorry but we kind of DO!!!

  • Im 39 so FUCK OFF CHEESEDICK !!

  • youre 39 and you call people cheesedick?

i think you need to grow up a lot

  • This plane's wings are ridiculously small. I love this damned airplane. If I were a rich bastard, would get me one...or two.

  • Jet engine with wings...ahhh...the Starfighter

  • all passes are subsonic. they are over ground so it is required

  • Sorry I meant to add if you want to see a REAL HOTROD,WATCH VIDEOS OF THE LIGHTNING[The English Electric version]

  • Where are the shock wave depressions?.F104,s used to try to kill us by going round the low flying route in the opposite direction;as a high level interceptor fine low level forget it.

  • Looks like a fucking Thunderbird

  • If that´s transonic I can imagine how they drive!! At least their spaguetti cooks fast...

  • LAL - no shitty way that was transsonic.

  • oh look a glorified thunderbirds rocket

  • Trans-sonic my ****

  • that cant be transonic, there is no chance the landing gear would hold up at those kinds of speeds at that kind of altitude...

  • My ROFLCOPTER goes way faster than that, plus it goes SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI. LOLLOLOLOLOLLOLOLLLOLOLOLLOL!!!!!1!!1

  • hahahahah soi soi soi soi soi soi soi

  • That sucked lesbos balls!! That was like 15mph! Ive seen faster when I was driving behind a 90 year old Grandmother! BALLLs!

Go F-22 Raptor!!!!!! (now thats fast)

  • hell yeah!

  • no way that was transsonic lol

  • transonic is the speed btween supersonic and sub sonic, in that speed the plane is unstable and there is alot of shaking, so I dont think the pilot want to make a low pass in transonic speed

  • thats the stupidest looking place ive ever seen

  • what does transonic mean?

  • This plane was already obsolete when it came out, in the 50s... How can somebody be retarded enough to fly such an airplane, anno 2004??

  • This plane held the altitude/climb ratio record for more than 3 decades. On top of that, it held the altitude record since it came out until late 1990's... Obsolete in the the 50's? I DON'T THINK SO!

  • I don't believe that this starfighter passes at supersonic speed since the carriage is lowered.

  • Also the lack of a sonic boom means it was probably subsonic.

  • is that realy low????????

  • i think its all pretty interesting. would be cooler if it was a friendly debate though.

  • All you guys with so much education and training acting like small boys! Is there no diginity and decorum left among you? Disgraceful behaviour. Just tiny egos scraaoing, when you should be grateful for your knowledge and experience. TSK, TSK!

  • Excuse spelling mistakes. Just typos, and my hands are shaking with ire at you fellows scrapping!

  • mmkay im gonna use that knowledge and take a wild guess and say your in the international bachaloreate program better known as ib also known as the boys and girls with almost no lives?

  • i want one

  • subsonic goof

  • supersonic goon.

  • ya i dont see any after burners goof. better luck next year kid

  • OMG WHAT IS THAT RED PLANE?

  • F-104 Starfighter:

Still holds altitude and speed records set 45 years ago. It's the plane Chuck Yeager had to bail out of when he got burned by the ejection seat rocket

  • cheers dude

  • I dont know of anytime that the F-104 held both of the records, the SR-71 Blackbirrd holds both records, 25,929 m and 3,529.56 km/h. The F-104 Starfighter flew at speeds up to and around 2125 km/h. However a variant, the NF-104A did reached 36,830 m. Only record the F-104 Starfighter holds is being a flying lawn dart.

  • actually, it still holds those records as a figther. The SR-71 isnt a fighter. As far as jet power go, the SR-71 has the records set with the MiG-25 being right on its heals. As for the F-104 being a flying lawn dart....it is. They dont call it the "Mann Missile" or "The Missile with a man in it" for nothin. Imagine if it had a nice PW F100-PW-229 or a Ge F110-GE-492 in it instead of that ole J79. Speed records anyone? Time to climb records?

  • that is being held by thr f-16!!!! give me a f-5, or better the f-20

  • the lawn dart comment, it's the f-16

  • One last thing for Doover Boy:

IF you are a pilot, you would know about temperature and the effect on takeoff distance. Assume 100% efficiency for the engine.

Why does it take more runway to takeoff when the temp is high? It is NOT the temp Dufus, even thought the TEMP causes the real ISSUE.

Man, go and study this please.

  • i am quite familiar with effect of density thanks, if you ask a pilot an aerodynamic or performance question they will usually answer in KIAS. Ask a nav question expect an answer in KTAS. Is not sufficient info to just say 'knots'. If you want an answer reference to the ground you need to specify wind as well.

  • it's far far away from transonic. As you say its got its gear down, transonic speed will just tear off the gears and according to what i just saw, it's never going to be transonic, i think it's just sort of about 500km/h at the very most

  • I agree. I thought 400 knots max. I saw a Blue Angle F-18 at 675knots at the Seattle Sea Fair faces last year over lake. Saw the halo and he was only 20 feet off the deck, and the shock pull of the water made it very cool - but it was going WAY faster than this clip.

  • the red jet is pretty...........

  • Dooverlaki:

Does your Cessna fly because the airflow delta on the top and bottom of the airfoil creates a pressure imbalance that is enough to lift the plane?

If so, how fast would you have to fly on takeoff to create enough lift to take-off?

Please explain for all of us that are not smart.

  • Assuming you want the answer in KIAS, the answer depends on take off weight of the aircraft.

  • It's not a very pretty plane... personally F-22 s rule!! YAY! With debate going on back there I think its safe to say I, a 14 y.o AFC knows more about aeronautics and engine than some people (not speaking of anyone in particular...)

  • the red jet is pretty.

  • lol thats nothing...

try "german f-4 in low pass" germans know how to fly

  • its not called transonic, its called supersonic, and this F-104 didnot break the sound barrier

  • Transonic is the region between subsonic and supersonic flight speeds.

    TRANSition to superSONIC = TRANSONIC!

From the quality of the video its hard to tell if it actually is a transonic pass though; irrespective its still a cool plane and a cool little video!

  • ok you could not go transonic with gear down on u would cause major damage.. not a good idea when were they retired cos it says striking off day 31st october 2004

  • Have you watched the whole video? The first pass is gear down (which wouldn't be Transonic - unless you wanted bits to start removing thmselves from the airframe), the second pass is a high speed, gear up pass. Thats the "transonic" part of the video.

Watch the WHOLE video before commenting dude!

  • heres an idea yes i missed the end of the movie but relax and oh fuck off

  • Er, I was just trying to answer your question, but if you'd rather "fuck off" instead of "thanks for correcting me" then thats fine.

    Prick.

  • no u werent JUST trying to answer my queston you thought you would be a smart arse

  • Stop crying.

  • oh yeah cos im crying.... stay out of it

  • Eat a dang, mate.

  • erm no how bout get ur nose out where it doesnt belong?

  • Its the internet, douchebag. My nose belongs everywhere. Man up, and wipe away those tears, biotch.
