Sukova was well past her prime here. Anyone that thinks she's some "tomato can" for Martina and Chris just doesn't understand the evolution of the game and waht a role racquet technology played in changing tennis so that a Monica Seles could play the way she did. This was Seles' era, not Sukova - a serve and volleyer in an era of wide body racquets. Makes a differencde. She was an excellent player in her day and a very smart one too. But she didn't believe in herself enough to win a slam.
@suwanee4712 she played Graf many times even when Sukova was in her prime and didnt win even once if for practical purposes we discount her only win over a 14 year old Graf. She wasnt that tough an opponent for Chris either, she didnt get her first win over Chris until late 86 when Chris was almost 32. The only legend she legitimately gave alot of trouble to in her prime was Martina, and part of that was probably the mental situation with her mom.
Looked up Sukova was in FOUR slam finals from 1984 to 1993. That is unbelievable. OK she did beat a peak Martina in a huge upset in the semis to reach one so kudos for that. She is not a bad player but no way one that should she reach 4 slam finals either. She was a bit past her prime here and on her worst surface but you still see she moves horribly and doesnt have one huge weapon. No wonder Martina, Graf, and Evert were so dominant so long with tomatoe cans like this as rivals.
@kerstenfanatic Sukova was tall and rangey though, difficult to pass or lob at net once she got there, hence why she has a few Grand Slam doubles and Mixed Doubles titles. Taller players these days move so much better.
@kerstenfanatic I agree... Seles, Sanchez Vicario and Capriati were a breath of fresh air on a really boring tour where all the big wins were for Graf Graf and Graf...
@juju1305 that is true although Capriati didnt really make it big back then for all the hype. Her highest ranking in the 90s was #6, she never made a slam final, and she has a 1-10 head to head vs Graf. Finally in the early 2000s she fulfilled her longtime potential.
@kerstenfanatic yup, you're right, but she was still posting some fine wins here and there against all the top players, including that crazy olympics final where she beat Graf. I miss those days (though the last French open was fun to watch with Sam beating Henin, Serena and JJ)
@kerstenfanatic sometimes people fall at the last hurdle. Sure Schiavone had an easier draw, but she had the upper hand in her flawless final. I think Sam will win it next year. She's too good not to win a slam.
Criss qu'elle criait Monica Seles. Je me demande si elle en faisant autant quand elle baisait

nice quality you can see the ball
on the 1st point why did seles go back to the baseline and rally when she was at the net and hit two volleys
This was the best chance she could practise her net skills which would have made her a better player

and the clock stopped at 0:31 min.....
beats Graf-Zvereva!

Monica was gracious and left one game for Helena. I felt so bad when zvereva lost 0 and 0 at the FO final.

@juju1305 this era of womens tennis must have sucked. I watch clowns like Zvereva and Sukova play and wonder how on earth they reached slam finals.

@juju1305 Poor Sam did all that and still didnt win the title. It seemed almost unfair.
