Jake Shields sucks. He looked so, so bad during his fight with G.S.P. He literally looked like an amateur. It baffled my mind, but since then I've learned a little more about how, sometimes, lower promotion fighters can weasel their way into titles and then market themselves as legitimate, dangerous fighters.
Good on Shields--don't think I've seen anyone give Marcelo such a good roll in his own dojo--usually he's tappin the highest level guys with ease--Jake ONLY got tapped once :-)

@ipv4 I know, it sounds like I'm some some little fanboy right? BUT, don't you find it a even just a little bit interesting what type of ink (and message) one of the best grapplers in the world has permanently inscribed on his body? Like, what could it possibly say?
And I especially find it interesting because I always imagined Marcelo NOT being the type of guy to get tattoos....you know--the classic, humble, ingraciating martial artist persona....

@130kali i actually have seen an interview with jake shields where he said he's never trained gi before. that's why he calls his style american jiu jitsu.
7:06 to 7:20 now that shit you just cant teach... the jiujitsu feel, at this point i think jake shields has pretty much given up i don't think he is as good with the GI compared to his no-GI, regardless though him and marcelo are light years away when it comes to jiujitsu at its purest form. but you can also tell that marcelo wasn't playing around when he was rolling with jake shields like most of the blackbelt that visit his gym.
generally speaking basic moves work, you should only know how to do it right.. such is the principle of roger gracie.
everybody probably knows the key to this half guard pass. the the difference is the amount of PRESSURE you put on your opponent, this makes all the difference in the world, most people don't understand this till you roll with legit blackbelts. just the pressure alone when their on top will make you wanna tap.

1:58 to 2:07 marcelo basically just waits and baits jake shields making him think marcelo has no base to roll him over. shields finally go's for it and makes the mistake. the sweep is possible but risky because his right arm isn't in position to defend from taking his back, as he rolls to his knees
marcelo's right arm pins shields from getting his right arm out to defend and marcelo does what he does best
key points: 3:58 marcelo left hand on the belt, right hand on cross grip (faking a set up on a butterfly sweep) 4:02 marcelo's eyes
then slips his hips to make shields post his left hand to base, marcelo lets go of the cross now shields right arm is trapped making shields unable to base with his right arm for a sweep on the left, marcelo flattens himself and makes sure shields weight is on his left hook or shin, using the momentum and his right arm to push for the sweep.
