  • June...April

  • "not JUST because you're bright..." Raul's face is so funny right then. It always makes me laugh.

  • Respond to this video...

  • Whatever his orientation, I just wish he could manage some suggestion of lust in any direction.

  • Barbara Walsh, I love you. Best line delivery in the entire show.

  • some great acting in there. Interpreted the script very well

  • I am afraid I find his voice so flat and inexpressive compared to Dean's original ( granted he's trying to sound sleepy) but it's nasal and whiny in all of the songs, so too the donmar production. There's just no one to better the emotion of the original cast.

  • @jamieh1974 I do prefer Jones in this particular song, but of the three actors you mention, Raul has BY FAR the best voice (see "Someone is Waiting"), and is probably my favorite Bobbie. Don't even bring up Adrian Lester -- a fine actor, to be sure, but one that sings like Kermit the Frog.

  • @90lysander

Nope I prefer Dean's version in Someone is Waiting also. It's a personal preference. I am with you regarding Lester - just AWFUL

  • The acting in this production is priceless!!!!!!!!! It must be an actor's dream to have material like this to work with.

  • I hate the way they do this number. It was so much better in the origional. It lost all of it's comic elements and has become rather boring. The show has enough emoting in BEING ALIVE.

  • ok, one of you theatre people help me out. When she picks up the instrument...is that like symbolic of....sex?

  • when April picks up the instrument, she's picking up her luggage for her flight.

  • i watched this in my theatre class n i knew nothing about the play n when he forgot her name i thought ti was soooooooooo funny now i am in love with company

  • I hadn't really known everything about the musical when i listened to the soundtrack, and i thought it was like a one night stand thing...but he knew her before this....

  • I love this show soo much. And this revival! The direction, Raul Esparza, Barbara Walsh, the rest of the cast. All of it just incredible.

  • god i love this musical.

  • The Mendes version sucks, IMO, the actors can't sing, the singers can't act, the set design is horrible, the clothing is horrible and it just doesn't do justice to Sondheim's genius. Get los.

  • Let's hear who's a retard.

  • scusi?

  • It's all about artistic interpretation. Just because you think it looks wrong, that doesn't make it bad. You can't put a mark of good or bad based on the directors inspiration.

If you look at it without a stuffed head, it opens up many doors for all designers to produce beautiful work. The simplistic scenic design works very well for this type of show, and the lighting design complements perfectly.

  • Although, Raul Esparza is a WONDERFUL actor. And you want to talk about clothing? They're all dressed in black, like a freaking funeral. Because it is one! John doyle is a good director, I just wish he wouldn't do stuff like this to a sondheim classic.

  • Personally, I can't stand the Donmar production; it's one of the few performances where virtually every song makes me cringe. I'm sure the people are very good singers, but when they mask their voices with over-the-top, unconvincing, and annoying American accents, it just becomes intolerable to watch. I prefer this version a lot more, though I can understand not liking the on-stage instruments. I just ignore it. I think they sing well and play well, so it doesn't bother me much.

  • if you ever saw mendes' production of assassins, these american accents are supposed to be parodies of american accents and of the 70's itself. you sir, did not see that. Assassins in London was a success because in America, this was their history. Their presidents. In the donmar production, it is a parody of AMERICA and the crazies who populate it. That's why it was a success!

  • No, apparently I did not see that. It still doesn't help the fact that it completely ruined their voices and I couldn't listen to them because of it.

  • That's the thing about John Doyle. He's a fantastic director. You can tell because all the actors in his shows give fantastic performances. But he does weird things like that. I've just learned to accept it.

  • Agreed! He looks like an adorable puppy who has just been punished! Poor baby indeed!

  • i wish i was this girl!

  • Just make sure you're not as dumb =p

  • hahahahah

yeah, and i dont make him WANT me to leave in the end. hahaha..."ooohhhh gooood" hahahah i love that part. =D
