Nice video. I want to do this to my Nintendo, but I'm a noob at electronics. Does it matter what LED I purchase? Some use more voltage than others, right?
@JeremyPattonGuitar Most LED's will fire up at around 3 volts. Blue and "white" LED's tend to get brighter around 5v, but will operate happily on 3 volts. The main thing you have to consider is the amount of energy getting through there... an LED can tolerate plenty of voltage, but it's the amperes that have to be taken into account. This is normally solved by putting a resistor inline with the LED to sort of "lighten its load" and avoid thermal runaway. The NES has this already built in.
@JeremyPattonGuitar Oh, one more thing, all of that information should be on the LED's packaging (if you get one at radio shack) or listed in the catalog (if you order it from a company like mouser or dealextreme)

@slbrey Let's see you do better. We've been making videos and streaming them on the internet since before there was a youtube or a google video. We have a bit of a head start.
It's easy to make a 3 word reply to something you may have little understanding of, but the lack of any details on why you feel that way are revealing about your nature as a person.
In other words, stick my dick in your mouth and fuck what you said :)
@slbrey Oh, I just had a look over your videos on your channel, and I have an honest reply for that. And I'll do better than 3 words.
You couldn't be creative enough to find your way out of a paper bag. Your videos are derivative and uninspired. You are doing the same thing as every other jack off on youtube that couldn't come up with an original idea, so you rely on the same, tired internet memes, and the sheer popularity of the subject matter that your substandard videos attempt to address
Wow, been a while, I can't remember what the LED's were rated at on the package. I think they are 3-5 volt judging by the button cell we used to fire them.
LED's will fire with less than their rated voltage. What's more important is that LED's don't have any way to regulate their own power alone so it's important to have driver circuitry. On home brew devices this might be as simple as some resistance inline with the LED, but for our purposes the NES handles that just fine.
Just make sure any LED you replace the NES's with is the same rating/votalge. Shortly after doing this mod, the sound board in my NES died. the unit still works fine, but... i'm not sure if the LED i used drew too much amperage or something and cooked the sound board... Circuit modding can be fraught with landmines.
I think you take the voltage if the unit, subtract by the current voltage, then divide that total by the LED rating to get a good resistor value.

Even though I'm not a gamer it was pretty cool.
Am I right in guessing that the DGZ series is not going to be continued?
